He was very musical and melodic and I think if it was ever possible to hear a mix of the Beatles tunes without his basslines, you'd suddenly realise how good they are! As for Heather Mills, there aren't words that even come close to describing how superficial and phoney she appears to be.. How she can think that British people will have any sympathy with her I don't know? Macca's contribution to the world = writing some of the best and most popular songs of the 20th Century. Heather Mills contribution to the world = getting voted off an American Ballroom Dancing show and pissing off everybody who knows her, works with her or reads about her. No contest! Sorry for straying off topic but this kind of thing really infuriates me!

I should have looked at the others really for clues but I needed the bass in a useable state as I had a run of 4 gigs... My plan had always been to get Graham Wheeler my local luthier to set up the bass and as I've now got 2 weeks before my next gig, I'm going to do that on Wednesday and see what Graham says when he takes it apart. In the meantime, I'll check out that Warmoth/Gotoh link of Steves.. It's amazing how tricky a little problem like this can be to sort out, especially when parts or basses have been discontinued!! Hi Folks, just wondering if anyone has a view on which is the better way to use your Fx in a chain: 1) bass > compressor > amp > amp send > Fx > amp return or 2) bass > compressor > Fx > amp I just tried option 1) for the first time and to my ears, it sounded cleaner. But having done 4 gigs over the last 2 weekends, I'm feeling pretty tired so wonder if my judgement is as it should be? My Fx unit is a Zoom B2 1.u, compressor is a DBX MC 6 and amp is a GK 700 RB.. The Portland has a lot of live music on and Dave plays there regularly so it's kind of 'home from home' for him. Before I joined my band (Burning Organ) I saw Dave dep for them at the Portland last year and he's really good... I heard about it from Mervyn who has a shop in Worthing called 'Amps n Bits' and he's going there to sell and buy lots of bass gear. Mervyn has lots of Ernie Ball stuff (including some Stingrays/Subs) on the go as well as some vintage goodies too, which is his forte. Might pop down there myself as it's only 30 minutes by car and I've some speakers I really need to sell, Nik

If you look at the photo of the bridge, you'll see a brass coloured ball shaped object near to the end of the bridge, that the screw goes through. What's happened is that the brass object has come loose from inside the saddle so I either need to find a way to fix it securely back inside the saddle, or replace the saddle itself... Will try that google search and also try contacting Gotoh as well.. Nik

I had an old BB800 a few years back and it was a great sounding bass and dirt cheap too! They are definitely underrated these old Yamahas... Looks like you've got two very good examples there Bassman, well worth hanging onto I'd say!

I'm really enjoying it because of the switching options which gives it a more versatile tonal range than my Lakland DJ5, though it is quite a bit heavier which is the only downside. Still needs a decent set up and the B string saddle needs replacing but I could see it becoming my main gigging bass, which I never thought I'd say because the DJ5 has been such a joy. But there's more midrange tones available with the Roscoe and that could be a real deciding factor? As for the Peavey stuff, it is as you say 'great gear at great prices' and as Bass Ferret pointed out the Peavy 210 delivers more low end than a 115 which is mad really!! Bob - the GK certainly sounded sweet with the Peavey and luckily, I've got another gig tonight so I'll be able to hear it in different surroundings just to get a useful comparison... Don't know about anyone else, but I've got a bad habit of making rash, over favourable judgements about how good a new piece of gear is after using it for just one or two gigs.. And then 3 months later, I realise I was completely wrong.. So, I'm trying to be a bit more cautious from now on in the hope that it'll stop me wasting too much money!! Hi Folks, Last night at a typical pub gig with the usual dodgy acoustics, I used a Peavey 410 TVX that I bought from Martinbass7750 (top chap, by the way!) and the low-end it delivered, using my GK 700 head, Roscoe Beck V and my Wal Pro 2e, was just phenomenal!! At one point our keyboard player actually asked me to turn it down.. It's smaller than the Hughes & Kettner 410 I had, yet puts out more low-end and outperforms a 210 + 115 set up I had... So what I want to try to find out is just how it does that?? I know it won't match up against some of the boutique gear that's out there like Markbass, EBS etc, but for sheer value for money, IMO, this is a good as anything I've heard! Nik

Hi Folks, I've recently acquired a Fender Roscoe Beck V and it has a Gotoh designed bridge on it. Unfortunately, the saddle for the low B has come apart so that the screw that allows you to move the saddle backwards or forwards when setting up intonation, now won't work. There's a locking nut or screw that can be tightened so that the saddle doesn't move around but it's far from ideal as the B string can't be easily adjusted for intonation.. Here's a photo of the bridge: Does anyone know where or how I could find a replacement, bearing in mind this bass has been discontinued by Fender as a five string model? Thanks, Nik

We played a 50th Birthday party Friday night on the first floor of a Conservative Club in Newhaven with no lift - so that wasn't fun!! But there was a good young band supporting, so that made for a pleasant distraction as we hardly ever gig with other bands. Last night we were at The Crow's Nest in East Grinstead; again it was 1st floor but thankfully, they have a lift which makes a lot of difference when loading out at 1am in the morning! Both gigs were slow to get going at first but in the end, everyone was up singing and dancing, so a good weekend's work all in all! Another two more next weekend as well, so 'no rest for the wicked' as the saying goes... Nik
