Here's my latest - used to belong to Platypus and Psychoandy and now it's mine. I've had it about 3-4 weeks now but wanted to wait until my new pickguards arrived from Jeannie's Pickguards before posting - it had a boring plain white on before. It has Aero pups, a J-Retro Deluxe, a Hipshot drop D thingy and a new set of DR Sunbeams on it. Oh and I bought a new Hiscox case for it - very nice too.
That's simply beautiful.. And at the risk of making a discussion of the aesthetics of your bass sound like a 70s porn movie, I definitely prefer the the 'black on black' look
Ok folks, here is the idea. Several people have been looking for free loops to download and play along with for practice/recording at home. There have been some great examples of sites listed buy also several people said they were able to make some loops at home for others to use. I was thinking if we had this forum split into genres people could look for a style, e.g. Hip Hop and then a tempo and find some loops to try. Members will be able to upload loops too, and there will be a forum to upload loops with your bass lines for discussion and to make requests for certain things. So take part in the poll and be honest - if there are not enough people to make it work we can abort the idea. You don't have to create the loops yourself, you can link to free loops you find or upload them here if you have permission. One good example of such a site is this link: http://www.drumslive.com/freeloops.htm We can discuss file types etc later but I think .Wav or even MP3 files would be good all rounders allowing people with various audio programmes to use them. Let me know what you think - do the poll and post your ideas! Cheers ped
Great Idea! I don't have the technology to contribute but would love to find ways to improve my playing and this would really help that, so a big thumbs up from me Nik

Ibanez GWB35 fretless.... Pics added! SOLD!
I recently bought one of these 2nd hand for £400 in mint condition - and they are truely awesome basses. Its the first fretless ive played that made me feel comfortable, and I recall taking it to the south east bash with Ped last time and quite a few folks fell in love with it. Im not a big Ibby fan bu this is something else - a real belter. The single Bartolini pickup really sings out with loads of fretless "Mwah" with the treble up high, and really thumps out some bassy goodness with the treble rolled off. Just thought I would add a little of my own experience to this as I honestly believe that whoever buys/trades this will not be disappointed - the ramp is very easy ti get along with, and its built like a tank! FREE BUMP!
+1 I was one of those you mentioned at the SE Bash who played your fretless and loved it, and that's coming from someone who'd never ever played a fretless bass before! It was a joy to play; great sounding bass and a lot of fun. I think what surprised me most though was how easy it was considering I'd never tried a fretless before.. Good luck with the sale Alex -
Thought I'd post up a thread for Mxm, namely Matthew, who's just sold me his Marshall 412 which I'm still getting my head around... Matt's a very easy person to deal with, knowledgeable , honest and best of all, he has a great sense of humour!! Would definitely deal with again..just for the funnies! Cheers Nik
You know what, I think after buying and selling a few basses and couple of amps in the last year or so, I've finally found my sound. Using the G&L L2000 Tribute I've just got and my Warwick mini-rig, I'm getting the growly, punchy, clear hi-fi sound I thought I would from my Stingray. With no pedals, effects or anything. It's spot on for what I need it for (punk, rock and indie covers) and the whole kit (bass & amp) came to less than the price of a new Stingray. Goes to show, it's not what you spend that counts, I guess. Won't stop me GASsing for something else, mind.... Anyone else happy with their aural lot?
That's good to hear Matt! Mind you, I've played your L2000 and it's an absolutely fantastic bass.. Interesting point you make about money, because it's definitely true that spending loads of cash doesn't always get you the sound you want.. Personally, I've some way to go to get my sound right for gigging.. My basses are cool and I love the GK 700 RB head I've got. But it's getting the right cab that's the problem.. Maybe getting there with this Marshall 412 but it's early days yet.. Nik
Excellent process .. It was so easy when it didn't matter if you had the same name as a band in San Francisco, or Scunthorpe .. These days though you'd have to pre-empt the process with "each band manber comes up with 10 names that are not already in use by a band or a myspace or so common that no one would ever find us using google, that says what we do and that fits easily on a poster" .. Might be tougher
+1 to that.. You're 100% spot on because, these days the internet is where so many bands start to promote themselves and of course, that is a global marketplace. At the risk of sounding like a Monty Python sketch, "it was much tougher in our day" because there weren't the same ways to promote yourselves as a new band. But equally, the competition is much more intense now as each new band is fighting for attention in amongst hundreds of thousands of bands as opposed to just the UK ones.
As you say Nik, it was delivered safe and sound and no need to test out insurance liability, so a happy customer; just like I was with Interparcel. However, can you put hand on heart and say that you'd send a £500-£1000+ fragile instrument like a bass without knowing full well that you'd be covered? Even with insurance I always have a bit of a sleepless night or two if I sent anything through a courier, I couldn't even begin to imagine what I'd be like if I wasn't insured or I wasn't 100% clear on the T&C of the insurance.
Hi John, Yes, I agree that I'd be much more concerned shipping an expensive instrument than a relatively cheap speaker and if it wasn't coverered, then I wouldn't use them. Because the service I've just received has been so good, I think I'm going to try and get a definitive answer about the insurance issue because I'd like to use APC again.. I'll let you know what happens, Nik -
After a new lineup (different drummer (who is absolfrickinlutely amazing), one guitarist instead of two, and no keys/sax) my band (The Gravel Shifters) have decided to change band name, as our musical style has changed from Chicago/Texas style gritty blues to a more audience appealing "Funky-Blues-Rock-Latino" quartet. Problem is we can't think of a name, and I've wondered if any of you have been in the same situation By the way we're going to play songs like: David Bowie - Let's Dance Jamiroquai - Deeper Underground (I have a cool effect through my Boss GT-6B) Santana - Black Magic Woman (Funkier with a Latino style jam ending) James Brown - Play That Funky Music Gary Moore - Oh Pretty Woman (Funkier version)
Maybe we all worry about band names too much? After all, the biggest band ever "The Beatles", had one of the worst names ever IMHO. Mind you, having said that, I was in a band once and we were really struggling to find a name and it was stopping us moving forward.. So, to try and take the emotion out of the situation, someone we knew suggested we use a scientific approach to finding a name in order to stop us continually arguing and disagreeing over the issue. IIRC, it was something like this: 1) We each came up with a list of 10 names we liked. With 5 band members, we had 50 names in the pot. 2) Over a pint or three and by voting for the ones we liked, we whittled the list of 50 names down to just 5 names. 3) We went away and each asked 10 friends to vote for their favourite names from the list of 5, scoring their favourite name with a '5' and their least favourite name with a '1'. 4) We then added up the scores and the name with the highest score was the name the band chose. The name we came up with was 'Kickback' if I remember and though it wasn't brilliant, we all liked it enough and for the time i.e. late 1980s, it was pretty good. The best thing about it though was the fact that we didn't actually choose the name, our mates did it for us. And as it them who came to all our gigs, it was a very democratic process.. Band was pretty rubbish though!!
Interparcel delivered the bass safe and sound and it cost £40 (inc insurance). No issues or problems so they seem OK! When you say I disagree with APC's insurance policy that's a bit of a misnomer... they have a very clear policy, you can't insure it with them. Looking at the start of the thread the first courier up there is APC with +4 and no negatives, with people giving it praise left right and centre, that's why I went to use them before any other. However, as members of the general public our valuable instruments wouldn't be covered AT ALL. I'd love some of the APC users who've commented on this thread to give us some insight into how they feel knowing that they had no insurance when they sent their instruments, I'd be furious. Be assured I've checked yet again that APC's policy is no insurance to non-account holders, I rang a different branch yesterday afternoon and asked for a quote to send a guitar to London and I wanted it insured; I got a quote for £15 but was told there was no insurance cover nor could it be purchased separate! I don't have any beef with APC they are well within their rights to only offer insurance to account holders, hence I wouldn't argue that they warrant any negativity but let's get real, it certainly needs a big red flag to warn people that their instrument won't be insured at all.
This whole thing is pretty confusing about APC, but I can only react based upon my experience of using them and their network. So..This morning, the speaker that UK SameDay (via the APC network) were delivering for me, arrived safe and sound. Not only that, it was a day early and there wasn't an extra charge for a Saturday delivery, which some couriers like Parcelforce will charge you for. Communication along the way was excellent; they even rang me yesterday to say they couldn't get it to me Friday, so it would have to be Saturday morning. I didn't mind because I'd paid for a 3 day service and wasn't even expecting it until Monday! Even better still, this service turned out to be £14.00 cheaper than Parcelforce quoted me, until Parcelforce realised they couldn't ship something over 30 kg, which this speaker is, so they withdrew that quote?? I suppose the only way to really discover if the insurance UK SameDay quoted me is valid, would be if the item was damaged or lost in transit and I had to start making a claim? Fortunately, that hasn't been the case.. -
Looks bloody brilliant to me! Well done on achieving what you want sound-wise and looks wise..I heard a DarkStar pick up on one of OBBM's Lakland basses at the SE Bash and it was just fantastic so I can imagine what yours sounds like... Nik

My 15 yr old son came and loved them, so the even cross the age divide, no mean feat for a bunch of aging canadian hippies.
Good to see you there Nig and it's great your son enjoyed it.
In that case someone somewhere within APC is telling lies and doesn't want our custom! Below is a copy of my email and their reply, note the 'this is not insurance' which lead me to ask about insurance. Obviously I've omitted the addresses for privacy reasons. I called the person named on the email and I specifically asked for a quote to include adequate insurance and I was told that there was none, I then said "obviously there is the standard level of cover, which I'd like to increase to cover possible damage or loss". She replied, "Let me just check something... no sorry there is NO insurance cover and it can't be covered at all". I was flabbergasted and asked to speak to whomever she'd spoken to or a manager, it took a bit of bullying but I got to speak to someone who was able to confirm that I could not insure my item unless I was a business user. I have no axe to grind with APC, like everyone else I just want to find a quality insured service for transporting my pride and joy. However, it seems that you get a different story depending upon which branch you use. I've just rang them again (a dog with a bone); categoric, absolute, "as a non-account user you have no insurance whatsoever but don't worry if it's wrapped well it'll come to no harm as we look after our parcels and never throw them about". Are you saying that if you're a business user, your items are insured but they're not if you're a one-off user like I was? Thanks for that info... Nik
I just checked on the insurance and have been told categorically that there is £13.00 insurance cover for every kilo delivered. So a speaker cab weighing 50 kg is covered for £650.00 Special items like guitars can be discussed on a case by case basis, but an extra £1000 insured value costs an extra £10 which isn't too bad in comparison to other couriers. There are things they will not cover so in each case, they advise you to discuss your item with them. As well as all that, they are cheaper than Parcelforce too, so I'm still happy to give them a big thumbs up! -

As a follow-up, I just wanted to say that Rush were brilliant at Wembley on Tuesday night, though from where I was sitting, the sound could have been a bit better. I'm still not that familiar with the songs but as a live band, they really have something a bit special about them. The drummer did a great solo in the second half and powered through the songs all night long. The guitarist, who someone here very amusingly said "..is slowly morphing into Peter Schmeichel , played more guitars in one show than I've ever seen!! Very good player though.. Geddy Lee is talked about a lot on bass forums including this one and certainly, he's very impressive to watch from a bass playing point of view. But to be honest, I was more blown away by his songwriting abilities and his ease at connecting with the audience. As I said to my friend from the States who sorted out the tickets, there's something almost 'shamanic' about Geddy which i didn't expect at all. As for his basses and sound, I'd have loved to have heard him play his Wals, but he gets a great sound out of his array of Jazz basses. I was surprised that when he used his Rickenbacker in the encore, it didn't really cut through the mix IMHO. Quite how he does it all; sing, play bass, play keyboards, use footpedals and lead the band, I don't know. He's obviously a very talented person!! Best thing though was his sense of humour, as shown by his choice of bass rig which I'm not quite sure how to describe, but here's a picture of it: I'd definitely go and see them again, that's for sure... Anyway, thanks for all the song suggestions and to Walman for the loan of the DVD & CDs....Good to see you there as well Nig! Cheers Nik
Hi Folks A friend of mine is coming over from the States in October and he's a mate of Geddy Lee so he's invited me to go see them at Wembley with him; free tickets, access all areas, get to meet the band afterwards etc, etc!! All of which is brilliant and I realise I'm very lucky to be asked..I'm sure it'll be a real blast and I'm really looking forward to it! But, to be honest, I've never listened to Rush before and don't know anything about them other than the fact that Geddy is a great player and certainly, one of the most respected bassists around. Truth be told, I'm probably more aware of him as a bassist because he has long been a user of Wal basses, rather than knowing of him through his music - though I understand he pretty much uses a Fender Jazz all the time these days? Anyway, to spare my blushes, I really need to swot up a bit beforehand. So I wanted to ask all you Rush / Geddy fans which Rush tunes are the real gems in their collection, the ones I should definitely get to know before Oct 9th?? Any help much appreciated, thanks Nik
Just wanted to add a massive +1 for APC!!! They've just been brilliant helping to sort out shipping a cab for me that none of the other couriers would touch because of the weight of it. Not only that, I've been able to speak to them directly without going through an awful call-handling system that takes ages and costs time and money. Everyone I spoke to there was friendly and helpful and that alone made such a difference... So a big thanks to them at APC and an even bigger 'no thanks' to all the others! Nik
This should be a sticky. APC Overnight Used them three times. First for a Trace Elliot 1153 cabinet... 20 kg or so, £22 or thereabouts, overnight delivery to Portsmouth... didn't quite get there overnight, due to me sending it late afternoon, but still gets a +1 Second for a Trace Elliot 7210 (which I note the buyer has up for sale at double the price they bought it at and aren't mentioning the work that's been done on it, but that's by the by). Overnight delivery to Hampshire 40 kg, cost £30. Economy would have been £5 less. Another +1. Sent a very expensive acoustic guitar this morning. Less than 10 kg, overnight delivery cost £15.86. Paranoia/sense made me insure it for its full new replacement value of £2000, at a cost of £5.87 (which would insure it for up to £13,500). It's a bit soon to give them any points, but I can't imagine anything going wrong. So that's +2, pending +3. For those who are into such things, they also have online tracking, which qualifies them for the Paypal sellers protection. Friendly guys too. Carried the amp from the car for me without me asking.
-
SOLD. Fender Roscoe Beck V in Shoreline Gold
silverfoxnik replied to mybass's topic in Basses For Sale
Hi mybass As you say, the RBVs are discontinued, so this is quite a rare beast now.. When I had a play on it a couple of months back, I was amazed at the range of tones you can get out of it for a passive bass and it is LOUD! The pick ups put out a lot.. I can definitely vouch for the fact that it's in absolutely immaculate condition and plays beautifully. The other thing that impressed me was the low B, which is excellent for a 34" scale neck. And as far as I know, there isn't one of these left in stock anywhere in Europe now - only the 4 string version - so as someone else said on here recently, "it's as rare as a rare thing in raresville" Good luck with the sale Nik
Fender Roscoe Beck five stringer with Shoreline Gold finish and original case. Looking at around £1075 Alder select wood body. Maple assymetric neck, means it is "contoured" on the treble side for ease of high end playing. 22 medium jumbo frets Pau Ferro fingerboard 9.5" radius 2 humbuckers with mini toggle switches with a multitude of pickup combinations. (I believe made by Bill Lawrence). 3 position pickup selector Master volume and master tone with push/pull mid shaping. Gotoh bridge Hipshot Ultralite tuners 34" scale length 1.875/47.6mm nut width Graphite neck rods 6 bolt neck plate 3 ply Mint Green pickguard This bass is virtually unused and probably had less playing than any instrument sitting in a shop. I would say it is therefore in as new condition. It is very well set up with a great action and recent set of Galli strings and sounds tuneful and speaks well across the whole neck range. The low B has a good feel. I've hesitated a while in selling this bass but as I'm not using it for work I thought was coming in, it will have to go. It is a cracker of a bass. By the way, Roscoe Beck is the ace bassist in the excellent USA guitarist Robben Ford's band. I still use the 4 string version but this 5 stringer has refused to go out with me, prefering to sit indoors and watch the TV, so here it is! I am not certain if the 5 stringers are available anymore, some saying they have been discontinued. I happen to think that this Shoreline Gold is also the best colour for this bass model. I would much prefer any buyer to pickup or meet up somewhere but postage and insurance can be arranged. I hope he doesn't mind me saying but "Silverfoxnik" has seen this bass and could vouch for its condition. One Basschat member has seen this bass a while back so the above description is as true as can be.
-

Hi Folks, I'm going to see Rush at Wembley Arena on Tuesday night and have to drive up there from the south coast which is normally a 2 to 3 hour journey depending on traffic. And with Wembley always being busy on gig nights I can see that I'm going to struggle to get there in time for the show. So I wondered if anyone knew what time the band normally goes on stage (doors are at 7.30pm), whether they have a support band and roughly how long they play for? It's going to be too late for me to get a train back so I really do need to take the car but I'm worried I won't get there in time..Especially with having to find a parking space as well... I'm looking forward to it but I'll definitely enjoy it more if I can reduce the travel stress that goes with it!! Cheers Nik
