I picked up an MTD Kingston for £150 here (or wherever we were at the time). I might re wind the pick up (Wizard £35), dump an East MM-a-like pre in £95 and you are away. I absolutely LOVE the MTD, it is lighter than a light thing, cheap so that I don't have to look after it and the neck is JUST FABULOUS (if you like wide and thin). I cannot speak highly enough of it.
I had two MTD Kingston's - the single pick up model and the MM/H model and they were both great. Cost approx £200 each as I recall. Other than that, the Yamaha range of basses is pretty good too. Good luck with the search, Nik

Great to hear that we raised £130 for a good cause and thanks for sorting that out Dave; excellent work!! Mind you, does that make the Basschat SE Bash the bass player's version of a Salvation Army Coffee Morning?? If so, we need some Hobnobs at the next one and hairnets all round! "Thanks also to (Silverfox)Nik & Walman for letting me noodle around on their WALs - first time I've ever met one in the flesh & I can see why they have their followers" Cheers Pete - enjoyed the noodle on the Arias as well... I'm up for another SE Bash and/or the next National one, depending on all the usual provisos but particularly location. Mind you, I wouldn't want it to appear that the National Bash choice of location is being monopolised by people from the South East. That's why I thought the SE Bash two weeks ago was such a great idea. Solved that particular problem... With so many people to cater for, the earlier we book in some dates the better, so let's book some dates in soon. Nik
Cheers again Nik. A new bass every 20 years is a bit slow for most here I know but I'm working on it!! Now then.......amps
Thanks mate! A pleasure dealing with you and all went according to plan, but can't remember whether it was your Plan A, B or C? Considering you've had your Wal for 20 years it's high praise indeed for another bass to be 'allowed' into the Walman stable!! Enjoy the bass.... ..As for amps; now there's another story...See you on the 15th all being well, Nik
Drool... Lovely, very fair price & Padauk Red as well. Alas 'tis not for me, the "eye" dot markers indicate that it's the wider-necked variant & my fingers ache after a bit on my 34" narrow SB-900. If we're "naming & framing" Bassassin likes a bit of red... Pete.
Hi Pete Thought this might be for you but having read your post, it's amazing what you can learn on this forum!! It is a nice bass as you say.. Hope all's well with you, Anyway, here's another BUMP for the SB-60.. Nik
And that, my friends, would be a brilliant bona-fide bang-for-buck bargain. How's that for a spot of early morning alliteration? +1 for a terrific amp.
Extremely eloquent and excellent early morning exposition, I'd say! Afternoon analysis of amazing alliterative agility..... bloody difficult to keep up!!
Hello, is possible to send it to Belgium? How much? Thx
Hi Bassman To send to Belgium via Parcelforce International Standard is approx £37.00 (GBP). It's a 3 day service, insured up to a value of £150 but is not trackable whilst in transit. A trackable service which is better, would cost about £10 more. I find Parcelforce are reasonabley priced though I can look at others and get back to you if you like? Thanks Nik

Peavey Mark IV series Vs Hartke HA3500
silverfoxnik replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Amps and Cabs
Just go with what makes you feel good when you're up there playing, Nik. Don't start flogging stuff off just yet though - allow for a re-think! Truth be told, the punters at the bar are probably hearing a completely different sound anyway.
That's good advice!
Mind you with that Peavey head, they won't be listening to the sound, they'll be trying to work out why the bass player's brought what looks like a top-loading VHS video recorder with him.
LOL There's no answer to that very perceptive comment, Matt! Perhaps whilst I'm at it, I could decorate my tiny corner of the stage (well, floor space really) with some Farrah Fawcett-Majors posters circa '78, a copy of a Joe Jackson 7" single and some pictures of Bjorn Borg and Vitus Gueralitus (..late 70's tennis player who inherited his name from a venereal disease) having a couple of bad hair days...or decades! That'd sort it out nicely - who cares about the sound! -
Fret w*nkers tune an octave higher than us, don't forget that Pete.
Very funny words of wisdom!

Peavey Mark IV series Vs Hartke HA3500
silverfoxnik replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Amps and Cabs
I love this, efficient gear. Stick with the Peavey, you know it's the right thing to do. Although... you could sell both and get something even better
Mmm.. I have thought about getting something better, truth be known! There's so much choice though, it would means hours and hours of searching, testing, fiddling about endlessly with tone controls, pre-amps, different amp/speaker combinations... Could be a real 'pressure', but someone's gotta do it I suppose Seriously though, I've looked around at some amps/combos for sale here; Trace Elliott, GK, Hughes & Kettner and they seem like a possible way forward too, towards that more simple set up.. All the Markbass, Epifani EBS stuff looks great but is too pricey for me at the moment.. Think I'm going to gig the Peavey with the Lakland next weekend to see what that's like and keep an eye on the amps & combos coming up sale. Cheers Nik -
Hi Folks, I've been trying to simplify my equipment and get back to some real basics (no pun intended) in order to get the best tone I can.. To do that, I think that means having: (i) great sounding bass / basses (ii) as few pedals as possible (iii) the right amp/speaker combination Of course, I realise all of this is totally subjective and dependent on individual taste. budget etc, etc. But here's what's working best for me from the equipment I have: (i) Lakland DJ5 / Wal Pro2e (ii) DBX MC6 Compressor ->Zoom B2 1.u (used for tube pre-amp, auto-wah, vol pedal, tuner) (iii) Old Peavey Mark IV head -> Gallien Kreuger 1x15 (and sometimes, with the GK 2x10 as well depending on the gig). I've recently eliminated my Boss TU2 and Boss AB2 from the Fx chain, replaced the Trace Elliott compressor with the DBX and changed from a MM Sub 5 to the Lakland, which I used for the first time last Friday and it was absolutely awesome!! What's driving me mad is that I have a perfectly good Hartke HA3500 which logic tells me I should be using because it's more modern, has tube & solid state pre-amp stages and is probably more robust.. But I much prefer the sound of the Peavey even though it's about 20 years old, is solid state technology, hisses way to much and looks fugly...But it just sounds better. To my ears anyway! Any one got any thoughts about this to help put my mind at rest - other than to confirm for me that I am completely mad, obsessed with retro gear, stuck in a timewarp, a deaf old git, sad loser etc, etc.. Thanks Nik
OK first post on basschat (i usually go on Talkbass.com the US version of basschat) i have a Zoom B1 multi effects pedal and no one over in the US seems to have one. i just wanted to know what settings people have on this pedal? thats all. Bass_Junkie
Hi Bass_Junkie, Is this link of any use: http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/dem...mo_b2series.php It has some soundclips that are quite good as reference points. I use the B2 1.u now but had the B2 beforehand and found myself using the pre-amp settings mostly. In particular, the tube pre-amp is really useful.. But lots of the other effects are excellent, depending on what you're doing. The auto-wah is one I've used but I tend to use the factory setting as it does the job nicely! Hope that helps, Nik
Defo worth it with the £ against the $ so strong.
Another great G&L bass Matt! You're definitely the King when it comes to getting them at bargain prices! Look forward to hearing about how you get on with it at a gig? Nik
