When the back of the neck was re-finished by Graham Wheeler, my local luthier and all round good chap, it came up really well.. And it does play beautifully, Nik
This is a hell of a bass. I bought an SR5 when I was getting fed up of playing everything in E flat (keyboard players eh), but just couldn't get that Stingray sound out of it. A couple of months later I read some reviews of SUBs, suggesting that they were very close to the real thing, and realising that the SUB 4 and SUB 5 both used the same preamp (and also that the SUB5 had the tradidional 'ray pickguard which I love), thought I'd take a punt on this one. It didn't dissappoint - unlike the two SR5's I owned, this bass sounds like a 'ray. The East preamp was simply the icing on the cake. Very slim and fast neck for a fiver as well. I've owned a Bongo 5, 2 Stingary 5s and this bass, abd IMHO, this was the best of the bunch by some way. Chris
Thanks for that endorsement Chris! By the way, we had a brilliant time at the SE Bash today and it would've been great to see you there...Must make that happen next time! Whilst I was there I collected the new Lakland DJ5 which is a beauty!! So, the Sub 5 really does have to go soon.. Cheers Nik

Hi Folks Well, I had a great day today and will post some pics up later! Just wanted to say a quick thanks to Dave for arranging everything and for the leads - top bloke indeed!! Also, thank to P-T-P (Pete) for hand-delivering my new Lakland DJ5 all the way from Wales, just in time for me to squeeze into the Laklands Owner's Club photos...Looking forward to playing it now! It was nice to put faces to names after all this time and as someone else has said, there was some seriously good kit in there today! Highlights for me were (in no particular order): Sibob's USA Fender Jazz Luke Ward's Warwick Streamer 5 Nick Thomas's USA G&L USA L2500 Walman's Wal Pro1 (that is really a Wal Custom..) Crazy Kiwi's Ken Smith 6 Bloodaxes 32" scale Aria bass with tremelo OBBM's Lakland Duck Dunn And if no one else has mentioned it I just thought I'd say that, though there was some very good equipment there today, more importantly, there were some very talented bassists there who just so happen to be very nice people. See you at the next one guys!! Nik P.S. We shared out the remaining beers at the end, so thanks to whoever provided them...

**** NOW SOLD - thanks for all the interest ***** Hi Folks Well having just bought P-T-P's Lakland LPB DJ5 and with an eye on an RBV as well, sadly, my Musicman Sub 5 with it's specially designed active circuit, has to go. This has been my main gigging bass since March when I bought it from The Beedster (..one of only a few of Chris's basses that wasn't named ). In effect, this is a 'concept bass' in that it has been designed to look and sound like a pre Ernie Ball 70's Stingray 4. With that idea in mind, it was stripped down and refinished, black scratchplate added and a specially designed John East circuit 3-band e.q. was commissioned, which was rigourously A/B'd against a 2-band SR4 in order to get the sound right . I bought it partly drawn by it's looks but also because the low B on a SR5 I'd had some years ago was very impressive and I was looking for something similar. And in that respect, this one certainly comes up to the mark with a really focused and tight sounding low B string, which is amazing for a 34" scale bass! Condition-wise, it's difficult to quantify because of the deliberately refinished retro look, so it's certainly not immaculate by any means. But structurally, it's sound and plays really well! The sound of this bass is pretty much as it was designed to be - it has that early MM SR4 'zing' and lots of bottom end. But, it can also do a lot more because it has a variable mid control that allows you to focus in on a particular mid frequency and either cut or boost it as you choose. For all it's strengths and unique qualities, including the fact that it's really comfortable to play and to do long gigs with, I'm selling because I've learnt that I just prefer the sound of passive basses (well, all except my old Wal Pro 2 that is ). Hence my recent search for a Roscoe Beck V and the acquisition of the Lakland. So here it is for someone else to enjoy, a unique sounding MM5 that really catches the eye! I bought it for £550, so I'd like to get £500 ovno for it. And considering that the MM Sub range has been recently discontinued by Ernie Ball (because they were too good for the money) and that the John East circuit is worth approx £140 alone, I think that's a pretty fair price, though feel free to make me an offer. I'm not looking for trades because of recent purchases I'm afraid and I'd rather avoid PayPal and their fees, so cheque or cash on collection is much preferred. I'm based in West Sussex if anyone wants to come and have a play of it first. Comes with a gig bag and I'm happy to ship it wherever, though obviously, that's extra. Like most of you, I'd rather not ship a bass but I always take great care when doing so to ensure the bass arrives in exactly the same condition as it left . Comes with a gig bag and the original MM circuit. Here's some more pictures: MM Sub 5 MM Sub 5 John East circuit MM Sub 5 Headstock MM Sub 5 close up MM Sub 5 back It'll be with me at the South East Bash today if anyone who's going wants to check it out. Thanks for looking, Nik

Sold pending the usual.....Really happy to avoid Evil Bay.. Thanks for the interest! Hi Folks Reduced to £180 plus p&p before going on Ebay!! Well having just bought P-T-P's Lakland LPB DJ5, sadly, my Yamaha BB615 (along with a bunch of other stuff including my MM Sub 5) has to go. This has been my back-up bass since January and IMHO, is one of the best basses out there for the money at the moment. Condition-wise, it's easily 9/10 having never been used really except for the occassional rehearsal and to sit on a stand looking good at gigs! You should be able to see that in the photos, though it's sometimes difficult to photograph well a bass that has a really dark black finish. When I bought it from GAK, it needed a bit of work, so I had it set up by my local luthier Graham Wheeler, who not only did all the usual stuff, but he sanded the back of the neck down so it's silky smooth to the touch and plays beautifully! I paid £270 at GAK and it's had a few quid spent on the set-up, so I'd like £180 plus p&p for it if anyone's interested. I'd rather avoid PayPal and their fees, so cheque or cash on collection is much preferred. I'm based in West Sussex if anyone wants to come and have a play of it first. Comes with a gig bag and I'm happy to ship it wherever, though obviously, that's extra. Hi Folks NOW SOLD - Thanks for all of your interest! Having just bought a more expensive bass, I'm having a clear-out to bring some money back in. So this amazing 4x10 Hughes & Kettner cab has got to go to someone who can put it to good use! It is built like a tank, will take whatever you can throw at it and sounds absolutely fantastic but when I changed my car to a hatchback recently (because some drunken idiot wrote off my roomy Honda estate in June), it's become far too difficult to get it to gigs.. I got it in a trade with The Wigfinder General last year for approx £150, so I'm looking to get £125 ovno, plus shipping. It's definitely a 'Pro' level cab and is worth more than I'm asking really but I realise that not everyone needs or can easily use something like this. Hughes & Kettner 410 H Hughes & Kettner 410 side view I'd prefer a cheque or cash on collection (as opposed to Paypal and their fee structure) if anyone's interested..?? I'm based in West Sussex if anyone wants to come over and check it out, have a chat and a cuppa etc.. Cheers Nik

**SOLD** Trace Elliott SMX Dual Compressor For Sale

** NOW SOLD** Thanks for the interest. Hi Folks I've recently upgraded to the Zoom B2 1.u, so this one has to go. Unit, manual and PSA included... It's been absolutely brilliant to be honest - I've used it as a tuner, FX pedal, pre-amp and compressor, so I really feel like I've had maximum value out of it.. Only reason I updgraded was because I wanted the footpedal that comes with the B2 1.u. IMHO, it's one of the best value units around and it's so easy to use - even for people like me who have never had pedals before! I bought it on Bassworld last year for about £40, so I'l like to get £30 plus p&p if anyone's interested? Cheque or cash on collection preferred to PayPal (sick of their fees) I'm at the SE Basschat Bash in Guildford if anyone's interested and wants to give it a try? Cheers Nik

Hi Folks, I've just bought a DBX compressor so this Trace Elliott unit is now for sale. It's a great little compressor for bass that's very easy to use in the studio or at a gig; seperate low and high compression settings, tone control and it runs pretty efficiently on 18v (2 x 9v batteries). No manual or original box but it really is simple and easy to use and is in good working order. Condition, as you can see in the photos is fairly good but as someone else said here recently, it's not bad considering it's been stepped on all it's life! Trace Elliott SMX Dual Compressor I do have the original PSA but for some reason (that is beyond my luddite electrical skills to work out), it's not working?? I bought it on Bassworld last year for £45 (I think) so I'd like £35 + p&p, ovno. I'd prefer cheques to PayPal because the fees just seem to be getting worse and worse!! Or cash and a cuppa on collection of course (I'm in West Sussex).. They seem quite sought after and don't come round every day of the week, so if you like dual compression and that Trace Ellitt sound, then this could be for you?? I'm at the South East Basschat bash in Guildford tomorrow if anyone who's going wants to give it a try.. Cheers Nik

I find that Dunlop 0.73s & 0.88s work great for me but it depends on how you play. My advice would be to go to a shop and try out a variety of different makes and sizes to see which feels best for your style of playing. Nik
Looks like I'm not going to make it tomorrow so you're gonna have to manage without me, my Flea and Carol, my new 73 Precision! Apologies guys, I hope you all have a great day Chris
That's a shame Chris... Hope to see you at the next BC gathering, wherever that is? How's Carol settling in at Beedster Towers then? NIk

I mean, that really awful looking Jazz, 3rd from left, with the block inlays and everything....It's just tooo much. We should just take it away now as an act of kindness....
Met Bernie at the Guitar Show, nice bloke. Makes a decent bass or too, so Ive heard!!!
+1 Yep -he's a great bloke and his basses are excellent.. -
Yes there is room enough outside to park and unload without blocking the road. It is the ground level but there are a couple of steps up. See you there.
Ok - thanks! It's great having our own Basschat reconnaissance team
Top man Dave, excellent photo guide, i will probably still get lost, ;-)
+1 Thanks Dave...really helpful! Just wondering two things, (i) is there a space outside where we can unload our gear before parking up for the day and (ii) is the studio on the ground floor? See you there, Nik
One of my earliest influences, & still one of my favourite players. Great melodic sense, scarily precise right-hand (plectrum) technique, and those basslines - Halo Of Flies, Billion $ Babies, Blue Turk, Gutter Cat... Genius. Jon.
+1 again...
+1 nearly all of the above. Sound good enough, last forever, cheap as chips. Just the name isn't fashionable? Goodness knows why, it's not as if they brought out the "Jade Goody Signature Model" is it Hamster
LOL Might just happen now you've mentioned it....
aah man i always liked danni
Have to agree with that about Danni, but Chris, this new bass really does have the 'mojo'!! Congratulations! Still on for the naming ceremony on Saturday?? Beer not champagne I hasten to add... Nik

I still have a Peavey Mark IV series amp and though it's older, less compact and a bit noisy, I much prefer the e.q on it to the e.q. on my Hartke HA3500.. IMHO, it's not just about best value or amp snobbery etc, it's also about what your 'ears' prefer. Nik
-
Brilliant and under rated - just listen to the Schools Out album.
+1 to that! DD was one of my earliest bass influences. He was also a major contributor to the Alice Cooper band's songwriting and as you say, the School's Out album is almost built around his bass lines! Great to see him getting some recognition.. Nik
-
T- Minus 3 days and counting!!! So, who's actually going on Saturday and what is everyone bringing? I'm bringing: Wal Pro2e BC Rich Eagle MM Sub 5 and probably my Hartke HA 3500 + GK 2x10... Nik

Hi Rufus Welcome to Basschat... By the way, we're not called oldies anymore.. the new phrase is 'midolescent'.. Look at this from Time magazine this week: "...Ralph and Wanda made their debut in 1977, when Ralph heard of several new books about the challenge of middle age. (Stanley, the friend who, as part of his "midolescent" crisis, ran off in that episode with a meter maid, makes a reappearance in this week's dialogue.) " Sounds pretty good to me! Maybe we're a new breed called 'Bassus Midolescentus' ! Nik

No Fender Precisions for sale anymore........
silverfoxnik replied to Beedster's topic in Basses For Sale
Picked up the new bass this evening. '73 Precision in sunburst with JPUP added at the bridge (and added a very long time ago judging by the thumb wear in the finish just above it). To my eyes the sexiest bass I've seen in years and the best possible combination of vintage mojo with the right PUP combination. Haven't played it much so can't reort so far, but looking forward to setting it up with some nice flats tomorrow. Pics soon folks Pink PBass above still for sale. Offers? Chris
Sounds great Chris - look forward to seeing her...Will there be an official naming ceremony, with champagne etc?
