1.
Funnily enough, I've just ordered the East Eq to fit to one of my Stingrays. I suppose the only issue I have with the Sub (and no offence meant) is that I've played a few in the past and found that they vary considerably in quality. Same as most basses I guess and if I had the time at the moment, I'd certainly try it out. I'm very glad to hear that I made the right choice in Eq though!!
The Eq is good, definitely. And yes, same make/model basses can vary so much it's incredible. At the Bash on Saturday, there were two USA G&L 5 strings and they sounded very different and felt very different to play. Can't comment on Subs as I've only ever owned this one, which is good!
 2.
Hi Nik, I'm good mate - you still got the Peavey amp or have you punted it on?
Glad to hear it Dave. Sad to say that the Peavey went to make way for my Hartke HA 3500A as I needed more volume.. Miss it though as it was so neat and functional! Still have my Peavey Mark IV head that I am definitely keping.. Thinking back, I should have bought another and bi-amped my rig... Nik
 3.
a very early Goodfellow...so early in fact it was serial no. 001. (I didn't know much about this bass but a friend of mine was in a band with Bernie a while back. He vaguely remembered that the whole thing was put together on his living room floor!) I picked it up for a very good price in a local backstreet 2nd hand music shop and it was my main (only) bass for many years. Although a bit tatty round the edges this was by far the best bass ever! In a moment of madness I swapped it for a Jaydee (which I didn't get on with). A year or so after I got rid of it I actually spotted it on some music shop's website where it was for sale once again but unfortunately there was just no way at that time that I had the funds to buy it back. Gutted. And of course, now it is long gone. Bah. Attached pic is from said music shop's website (complete with stuck on price tag!). peace c
Deepest sympathies!! I actually saw that bass for sale in the City Road pawn shop in Angel Islington in 1993, when I was hunting down a Wal bass that had been stolen from me. It was a brilliant bass and I kind of regret that I didn't buy it then, especially as it was serial number 001! Nik
 4.
If an instrument has a sweet spot its probably easier to find with 2 volumes. Down side is its not so easy to change your overall volume quickly on the instrument.
+ 1 That's my experience of it. I use the volume pedal on the Zoom B2 1.u to deal with the quick on/off volume stuff at the end of songs etc, but prefer the V/V/T set up.. Nik
 5.
Due to a number of the songs we're adding to our repetoire, I am seriously thinking baout investing in a 5 string (it will probably be at the expense of my Bongo, but I'm not sure yet). The basses I'm considering are either a Fender Jazz V or the Stingray 5 string. I had a DJ4 and didn't find that too comfortable, so I'd be interested to hear what people's recommendations are. Also, if anyone has a 5 stringer that they would considering swapping, P/Xing (whatever) for my Bongo, please let me know. Thanks
Hi OHM, Here's a link to my Musicman Sub 5 that is in the For sale forum: Musicman Sub 5 For Sale It's a great bass which is surplus to my requirements now as I have just acquired a Lakland DJ5 to go for a more passive, vintage jazz bass sound. But if you like the MM Bongo sound, then this might be for you as it has a specially designed John East active circuit that emulates the classic Stingray 4 sound but also has also has a sweepable mid e.q. control for further tonal flexibility! Nik
 6.
Bargain. These really are great pedals - do exactly what they're designed to do and do it well. D.
Thanks for the thumbs up! I couldn't agree more - last night I was using the Zoom B2 1.u that I have and the tube pre-amp setting on it is absolutely great, just as it is on the B2! Nik
 7. Thanks for the cables Dave - perfect as ever! Good to meet you on Saturday as well, at what was almost 'The Lakland Bash!'
 8. Tuesday morning BUMP
 9. Just bought one of Pete's Lakland DJ5s, which is superb! As well as the bass being exactly as described, in pefect condition etc, Pete hand-delivered right to me it to the SE Basschat Bash on Saturday so I didn't even have any courier issues to contend with or to go out of my way at all. A thoroughly pleasant and satifying transaction all the way through -thank you! Also had a chance to hear Pete have a play on Crazykiwi's Ken Smith 6 and he's pretty nifty! Thanks mate... Hope to do it again sometime Nik
 10.
Gutted I couldn't make this in the end. I'm still having the itch to get my greasy paws over OBBM's Lakland DD and see what is all the fuss about these Dark Star pickups. It was great of him to organise the thing in the first place. Will definately drag my behind to the next bash, be it national or regional.
The Dark Star pick (and the DD itself) was amazing! Probably the most 'huge' sounding pick up as I've ever heard! Very cool bass...
 11.
Hi Nik, I used a markbass front ported 2x10 with burning organ with a 5 string exclusively- it was as big and bassy as I'd ever need- I still use the same combination now, it's perfect for 5 string and takes anything I can throw at it. If you want to try it out, I'm only in Saltdean R
Hi Russ That's be great thanks - I'll PM you my mobile and we can arrange a time.... Nik
 12.
You numpty All of the ones I've sold were 'starter' type cheapo basses so I don't miss them. I do wish that I still had my first fretless though. (Yamaha RBX) I suspect that with a decent pickup and bridge it'd have a better sound than my current fretless...
I can only agree with you Dave !!! How's things with you BTW? Nik
 13. Personally, I've never been impressed with the Fender V's, whether MIM or USA made, mainly because the definition of the low B string on the ones I've played, hasn't been that good. The Lakland DJ5 I've just acquired is noticably better than the Ken Smith Designs Proto Jazz V I had, and it's way, way better than the Fender Vs I've tried. Firstly, the Low B is excellent, secondly, the playability is in another league entirely and most importantly of all, the tone is everything a good passive Jazz bass should be! Yanks always talk about 'bang for the buck' when they buy and sell basses on Forums like Talkbass and IMHO, the Lakland Skylines are definitely the best bang for your buck that you can get. Nik
 14. Hi Ped Great to read Lowdown #2 - thanks! Just a small comment about the photo credits. You credited me for the ones on P10 for the Guildford Bash but they're not mine. The ones I took start on Page 12. I think Steve took most of the ones on P10 and he and whoever else took some, should get the appropriate credit, Regards Nik
 15. NOW SOLD pending all the usual stuff - Thanks for all of your interest! Nik
 16.
This thread is for those of us who are still mourning over basses we stupidly offloaded. Me personally - I miss my Sandberg. In fact I miss it so much I think I might actually cry. Or I might just buy a new one :D
There's been too many I regret selling, and I few I regret having been forced to part company with, having had them visciously stolen from me by some of the lowlife that are out there! Sold a beautiful Tobias Classic 5 way, way back in the early 90s - it was beautiful with a purple heart & maple body. I had a beautiful BC Rich Eagle stolen which had a Bill Lawrence pick up on it that was just amazing. But the one I regret selling most was my Wal Pro with the leather scratchplate, serial JG1123, one of only 24 made!! Stupid, stupid, stupid. Only consolation was that I sold it to a good friend who uses it constantly on tour in the States, so I know it's doing the job it was built for..I'll post some pictures later if anyone's interested? Nik
 17.
Whilst main prompt for selling is Nik's Sub 5, will consider trades / cash either way for a fretted 5.
Very nice bass. Good luck with the sale / trade, either way! Nik
 18.
*cringe* Hit me up before you ebay it!
Ok mate - will do!
 19.
ee eck, If this is stil here in about two weeks can i have first dibs?! This would be my perfect introduction to 5 strings!
No problem if it's still here! Though I'm considering putting it on Ebay in a week if there's no takers here...
 20.
Nol I'll have it mate, about time we had another cuppa at Clacket Lane. Cash OK? If not I can Paypal Chris
Hi Chris, Have PM'd you, Nik
 21.
Pete and Nik - Wow, thanks for the endorsement! It was great to meet you both yesterday too. With comments like that I hope the Smith 6 sells before I change my mind...
Likewise Steve - look forward to seeing you at the next one!
 22.
That's an awful lot of bass for the money. The Yamaha BB614s &615s are fantastic. Mine's become my main gigging bass of late despite the other two listed below. The pre-amp adds a lot of punch and they can do rock, punk, funk, whatever. Great for cover bands. Don't be put off by the word "Yamaha" - it's often much better than the F word. Good luck with the sale Nik.
Thanks mate! Have to agree with you that Yamaha make some fantastic basses and though the BB range is supposedly 'budget', it's as you say 'an awful lot of bass for the money'! Nik
 23.
Had the pleasure of playing this during my (all too) brief visit to the SE Bash yesterday. Before playing it I would have described it using words like "beast" or "monster." To do that now would be doing it a disservice. THis is an exquisite instrument, that is utterly loaded with tone and which plays like a dream. Apart from the obvious good looks, it is far lighter than you would imagine and after a brief initial stumble over the extra string, I found myself whizzing about like I'd been playing 6 all my life. If it wasn't for the fact that I really don't have a gig where I would use it, I would have this bass in a shot.
+1 Perfectly summed up Pete! It is a beautiful instrument that seems to make you want to play it more, almost as though there's something inherent in the design that makes you adapt and develop your playing. Steve is a real gent too BTW, Nik
