Ampeg Valve Amp Ohmage Question?
silverfoxnik replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks for the reply @ikay ๐ I'll check out the TB thread now! -
Morning Folks Hope the weather is treating you OK wherever you are... So, I have a Luddite ohmage question about whether or not it would be safe or not to pair my Ampeg V4BH valve head with my Epifani 310 cab. Most of the time, I run the Ampeg with its matching 210 and 115 cabinets and it sounds absolutely glorious to me.. But at approx 60lbs each, it's a lot of weight when carrying both cabs around all the time. It does sound good when just using one of the cabs as well, especially the 115, but I have got very used to that full rig tone and (dare I say it) 'Heft'. ๐ And this is where the Epi 310 comes in - it's a beautiful sounding cab and really lightweight and, if I could run it safely with the V4BH, I think it could give me another more portable option for certain gigs and rehearsals without losing too much sound-wise. Like most valve amps, the V4BH has a switch that allows you to run it with cabs at either a total resistance of 4 ohms or 8 ohms. Now, to my Luddite brain, the way this is designed tends to make me think it's either got to be one ohmage setting or the other - or else you run the risk of major amp output transformer melt down!! However, the Epifani is rated at 5.5 ohms. So my question is: If I set the Ampeg to the 4 ohm setting, will that work OK with the Epi or will it cause a problem because it's not a precise match? Any pearls of wisdom and/or technical insight would be very gratefully received and much appreciated! Thanks for reading... ๐ Nik

I was thinking more along the lines of Elvis Costello (guitar), Pino for bass and maybe Stewart Copeland as the token American to keep the Yanks happy.. ๐ -

Good point about KT Tunstall - I remember watching that episode of Later and being blown away by how good she was.. @Marvin - yep, I thought that too about the lack of any reference to Punk and Grunge. Even more surprising when you think of who presented the show! -

+1 Uli Roth was a real surprise - what an intelligent and talented guy.. I really enjoyed this episode but of the three, I think the first one was the best, though all three made for good music related TV. Not quite sure why the Beeb went for three American presenters though? They all did a great job but nonetheless, it would have been nice to see some of our very knowledgeable and talented UK artists given this opportunity. -
I still think punters know and react accordingly when they're listening to something really, really good, even if they don't know why... Would be very interesting to see this idea put to the test though. ๐

Absolutely beautiful! Well in my eyes it is.. ๐ Stunning workmanship & playability and as tonally versatile as you'll ever need. Works in any musical setting too; not just a 'Rock' bass as BC Rich basses are often thought of.. Bernard Edwards used one of these from time to time, and he's undoubtedly one of the funkiest bassists this planet's ever seen. Anyway, I could go on all day about how good these are but it's only my 2p worth of course.. GLWTS

Great show and very informative as well.. Sheila E was absolutely brilliant, but then I've always been a fan of hers since her time with Prince in the 80s. Looking forward to the Tina Weymouth episode.. -

Nice! This brings back a few memories.. I had one of these about 8 or 9 years ago and it was a lovely sounding pre amp, exactly as Chris has described. I paired mine with a 210 cab for home practicing, which was great, but I also used to use it live in preamp mode to warm up my tone when I had solid state rigs for gigging. It's a really good piece of kit that's very versatile and you can't go wrong when dealing with Chris either, so all's good! GLWTS Chris and Happy New Year. ๐
