silverfoxnik replied to Hamster's topic in Events
Hi again Folks A quick update on this for you... '3.30pm - 4pm: A very brief 'Test of the Heft' workshop - can we really tell or feel the difference between valve amps & Class D amps!(led by Silverfoxnik /chimike & anyone else who's interested...) - ' The plan is to use a couple of Valve amps (my Ampeg V4BH and chimike's Trace V6 (any other valve heads welcome btw) and compare them via a few 4 ohm cabs with some Class D heads, including chimike's Markbass F1 and JapanAxe's Demeter head - again, any other Class D heads welcome for thi. What we do need on the day are a couple of 4 ohm cabs if people don't mind loaning them for this, for example, Gary - your Genz 212 would be good?? Thanks Nik -

Definitely not. My best friend is the drummer I was in my first band with 40 years ago and though I moved away from London in 2001, we've still maintained that friendship.. In fact, he depped with my band here in West Sussex a couple of months ago. Alongside that, I'm still reasonably good friends with a lot of musicians I've been in bands with over the years. Mind you - there are a few musos I have fallen out with over the years and coincidentally, they've all been 6 string geetards, or 'Controli Freakati' as that wonderful Huffington Post article referred to them as a few years ago! I shall say no more. 😁

Hi Folks, I think the phrase is 'better late than never', so without further ado, here are the programme details for the 12th Basschat South East Bass Bash!! Date: Saturday 29th September 2018 Time: 10am - 5pm Entry: £10 (for the 12 year running - how's that fo value for money!) Venue: Jubilee High School, Surrey, School Lane, Addlestone, Surrey KT15 1TE Venue Link: Venue website Map link: Streetmap link Workshops/Guest Speakers/Guests etc: Please note that times may (and probably will) vary on the day... 12.30pm: Blind Bass Tone Test (led by Paul, a.k.k Nancy Johnson + glamorous assistants) 2pm - 3pm: Richard Searle, Workshop With a great deal of tenacity & perseverance on the part of Gary, a.k.a. cetera, I'm really pleased to say that Richard Searle (bassist for Corduroy) has stepped up and will give a 45 minute talk on his career, gear choices, life on the road, and - if we ask him nicely - may be kind enough to demonstrate a few tunes.... Here's a link to some more info about Richard: Richard Searle Wiki 3.30pm - 4pm: A very brief 'Test of the Heft' workshop - can we really tell or feel the difference between valve amps & Class D amps!(led by Silverfoxnik /chimike & anyone else who's interested...) - Other important info: Room layout will be something along the lines of the last couple of years with the large Hall area as the space where you can all set up & compare (loudly) your own gear, the Theatre for Workshops, the Jam Room (as per usual led by the mighty Paul on drums) .... And in the Foyer will be the reception desk, Luthier Ian Robinson will be providing set ups (for a small fee of course), Refreshments, the Gear for Sale section and the Raffle Prizes table Spaces: The Quiet Room and the Theatre for Workshops The Jamming Room for jamming with drummers (and other strange non-bass playing people) The Main Hall (where you can set up your gear and make some low frequency vibrations) The Foyer - Refreshments, Luthier Ian Robinson will be on hand to do your set ups, Gear For Sale table & The Raffle About Costs....Every year, it costs about £185 for the hire of the venue plus an amount for some public liability insurance cover therefore to cover those basic costs, we need to charge £10 per head entrance fee to one and all. As stated above, it's been £10 since the event started back in 2007, so it really is fantastic value for money! Charities: We will donate all profits from the day to a worthy cause or two, probably in exactly the same way we did last year. Refreshments will be available on the day for a small charge of course which will help increase the profits and keep everyone happy! Last year, as ever, Hamster & Mrs Hamster (a.k.a. Sarah) did all the work on that and have offered to do so again, so many thanks in advance to them! How you can Help/Get Involved What would be really helpful from everyone who's interested in participating on the day is: 1. Donations of raffle prizes 2. Volunteers to help out on the day Thanks to all those who've already said they're attending - it's much appreciated and we look forward to seeing as many more of you who want to come along on the day! The South East Bass Bash Team -
I love the look and the neck shape/profile on them but realise Rickenbackers divide opinion more than almost any other bass.. In my first band as a young kid fresh out of school, I had a Ricky copy, and then eventually, saved up enough money to buy one - it was my first real bass and I loved it. And at the time, it fitted the post-punk music I was playing really well... it had a brilliantly aggressive, clangy and raucous tone to it that cut through tall buildings at 100 paces.. However, as soon as I changed band and the style of music I was playing, I needed a different bass, so I traded it for a P bass. Still miss it though.. Interestingly, I find my 2004 Gibson Thunderbird has a very similar neck profile to my old Rickenbacker and I really enjoy playing it for that reason. I also found that a lot of bass players that I looked up to when I first started playing were Rickenbacker users, such as McCartney, Chris Squire and Barry Adamson for example, and they made them sound great IMO.

No worries Pete, I think it's fair to say that, if we had been running a Bass Bash loyalty card scheme like Costa Coffee, you'd have been on your 3rd free Latte by now! Enjoy Huddersfield.. ☺ -

It'll be good to see you Roger ☺ -
Good thread! Strengths - a musician's brain, good listener, good ear for arrangements, can also play other instruments, diplomatic, sense of humour.. Weaknesses - tend to play the same riffs/modes all the time, have incurable 'bass-face', always late, change gear too often..

^^ The cake is the most important thing of all, by the way.. 😁

Great idea! ☺ Also, I'd like to run a Class D vs Valve amp test - anyone up for that? Let's see if we can provide a definitive answer to the 'heft' debate once and for all..
