  1. I recently bought one of these again - my fifth ever RBV - and I'm so glad I did as I'd forgotten just how good they are! The inherent sound from the Bill Lawrence pick ups is fantastic, the tonal variety is amazing, and the build quality and playability (for a 5 string) is second to none. Over the years these basses have gained lots of plaudits for being 'Fender's best ever 5 string', and I really do think it's well justified praise in this case. I was very interested in this one to be honest, but finally found one closer to home, otherwise.... And though I don't go for this in the end, this one looks to be in superb condition and is fairly priced I think. Anyway, just my 2p worth. GLWTS
  2. Wow ! I was lucky enough to do some shows with them in the very early 80s and always loved their sound, of which the drums were a major part. Happy Birthday Jet ☺
  3. Aretha's place as one of the all time greats is assured, and some certainly think of her as the greatest female vocalist of all time (within popular music of the last 50 or 60 years).. There are other female singers out there who mean more to me, but in the end that's only my personal taste. And in the end, that's what it comes down to - which singer, songwriter, band etc, etc, connects with us the most. Bit out of context and a tad sexist maybe, but that Arsene Wenger quote from a few years ago sums it up... 'Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home..' We're just lucky to have / had so many to choose from.. ☺
  4. Thanks Mick, Nor can I, but then again, the market here on Basschat has really slowed down over the last year or so. Maybe it's the growth of bass gear pages on Facebook or something else - I don't know? Whatever it is, it's a very different marketplace now. Cheers Nik
  5. Perfect; you'd better start loading up the car now! 😁
  6. +1 Quality British built bass which is a bargain at this price IMHO. GLWTS
  7. Yep - these were BC Rich custom shop level instruments; seriously high quality materials and components and very intelligent design principles. On a more basic level though when it comes down to how this bass is when playing it, you can get just about any bass tone from one of these.. The chicken head rotary control gives you an incredible array of tonal variation just in itself, and that's before you start using the toggle switches and other tone controls. It's a lot of fun... Think: the 'best rock bass ever' and the 'best funk bass ever' and you'll be starting to get close... 😊
  8. Having owned one of these back in the '90s, I can honestly say that these are just the most fabulous of 'custom shop' basses. They're beautiful to look at and to play and have so many tonal options to choose from it's frightening! I think this is only the second one I've seen for sale on Basschat in 12 years, so this really is as rare as rocking horse poo.. Suffice to say, whoever buys it will not be disappointed. GLWTS
  9. Hmm... Lots in the OP to ponder? I've had loads of basses, amps and cabs over the years and would say that as far as basses go, I've finally settled on three that just feel and sound right for me in every way; my passive 1984 BC Rich Eagle that I've had for almost 15 years now, a 2004 Gibson Thunderbird that I bought last year which has been an absolute revelation to me (having never owned a Gibson before). And just recently, I bought an almost mint condition 1998 Fender Roscoe Beck V, which is the fourth RBV I've owned but is by far and away the best of the lot. All three basses are passive and that seems to sit best with my rig, which is an Ampeg V4BH head and matching 210 + 115. I love the way it sounds; it just sits in the band's overall sound perfectly. So all in all, I'm pretty happy with my lot! There's a few things that niggle away in the GAS area of my brain though.... A hankering to use the Mesa Boogie Big Block 750 head I have with a Mesa cab (which I don't have) - I think that could be pretty exciting... I'd like a lighter cab set up but still haven't heard any that seem to feel right to me. And I keep trying to get hold of a P Bass that I can fall in love with, but I've still not found one that has been a keeper yet. Mind you, there's still plenty of time, so I'm not worrying about it too much... 😁
  10. +1 RIP Aretha Franklin. Another one of the truly great artists that will probably never be equalled.. She was top of a relatively recent Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Singers of all time poll and this quote about her always sticks in my mind: “No one can copy her,” Jerry Wexler, Franklin’s legacy-defining Atlantic Records producer, memorably argued. “She’s all alone in her greatness.” Read More: Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, Has Died | http://ultimateclassicrock.com/aretha-franklin-dead/?trackback=tsmclip
  11. Thanks Silvia! Now there's an offer to good to miss.. 😁
  12. Hi again Folks, As most of you know, for the last 10 years or so I've been really involved in organising the South East Bash along with Hamster, Happy Jack, obbm and bluejay. There have always been others who've contributed along the way including many of the great guest speakers we've had, exhibitors like Wal, D'Addario, Chowney etc, etc, and others too numerous to mention including our very own forum members who've run a brilliant workshop or two - like 5im0n's legendary Compressor workshop!! . Last year for example, we had some really brilliant help from cetera (Gary) who helped bring in Davey Rimmer and ped who helped bring in Steve Lawson both of whom were amazing! Background to this year's Bash: This year however, things have been a bit different and for a bunch of personal reasons I've not been able to put much work into the programme for the day... And, despite an amazing amount of behind the scenes effort from Hamster, cetera and Darren from Planet Rock in talking to some really big names, we don't really have a list of guest speakers such as we've had in the last 3 or 4 years. It's not been for want of effort on their part, nor lack of interest from some of the brilliant musicians that have been approached - it's just a case of people not being available on this date because of their other commitments... Happily - as Gary's already alluded to above - we do have one name speaker who'll run a workshop for us on the day which is fantastic news and more details about that will follow shortly... Looking for workshop ideas - please step forward!! So... in the absence of any other 'name' guests, we'd like to throw this open to you all to see if anyone fancies running a workshop or two on the day?? Any ideas really welcomed from Compressor workshops to music theory demonstrations/talks, double bass sessions, talks about your music/tours/when you bought your first bass or even 'A Funny Thing Happened to Me on the Way to my Weekend Pub Gig' type thing... I think you get the picture - we're looking for something witty, informative, entertaining and interesting that'll keep us all focused on you and your topic of choice for about 30 minutes or so.. Thanks and we look forward to hearing from you! Business as usual: Just to say that in all other respects, the Bash will be the same format as normal; Refreshments from the wonderful Mrs Hamster (Sarah) in the Foyer along with a 'Gear For Sale' area and the Raffle, plus talks/workshops in the Theatre... The Hall will be where we set up all our gear and make lots of noise and the Jam Room will be in it's usual place ready for lots of 'jamming'! Hope that all makes sense and we look forward to hearing from anyone who'd like to contribute on the day in whatever way you and of course, to seeing you there for the 12th South East Basschat Bass Bash! Nik (along with Hamster, Happy Jack, obbm, bluejay, cetera and Darren)

  14. Start of the week BUMP ! Quite a lot of PMs recently, but nothing definite as yet, so here's your chance if you want to own a quality Mesa amp that does everything it says on the tin, and then some! 😁
  15. Nice sound and nice playing too, Si... ☺ GLWTS
  16. I had a Lakland DJ5 about 10 years, same body colour as this one, and it was one of the most comfortable to play 5 string basses I've ever owned. The body shape in particular, makes it very comfortable, but the slim profile neck takes it to another level in terms of overall playability.. And they sound great too! Anyway, that's enough reminiscing from me. GLWTS
  17. I thought of you when the Buster came up for sale, Chris... Good move! ☺ The Venture looks like another great piece of Mesa kit as well, so I've no doubt you'll find a new home for it and hopefully that'll be quite soon.. Anyway, for those that don't know, Chris is a great person to deal with - as his long-standing and impeccable Basschat feedback thread on here shows - so deal with/buy with absolute confidence folks! GLWTS Chris, and all the best for now, Nik
