I'm sure that Paul Herman at Wal could advise on the ease, or not, of fitting an additional pick up in the bridge position, and making space for additional controls. This bass is probably fabulous sounding as it is, but I'm sure it would be even more tonally versatile and interesting with a Wal bridge pick up fitted. And with current prices being what they are for second hand Wals, it could be a relatively straightforward way to get a twin pick-up vintage Wal at a not too crazy price.? Lovely old basses these Pro models btw - I've had a fair few over the years! GLWTS

** SOLD Gibson EB5 5-string bass ** SOLD
silverfoxnik replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Basses For Sale
Thanks and I definitely second that about the owners at Gibson! It is a much nicer bass than I thought actually but you're right about how they are under-rated - even here on Basschat I think. In the last year, I've completely changed my views on Gibson basses and now use a 2004 Thunderbird for almost all my gigs/rehearsals as it plays like a dream and sounds incredible. This EB5 may not be quite in that class, but it's definitely no slouch and to my ears at least, has a lot of tonal options available with the coil-taps for each pick up. Oh, I forgot to mention in my OP that I had the bass set up recently by Graham Wheeler, an excellent local luthier here in West Sussex and it has a very nice low action now and plays very evenly across the whole fretboard.- 7 replies

Now SOLD - thanks for the interest Hi Folks For sale only is my Gibson EB5 5 String Bass (120th Anniversary model, 2014), which comes with the original Gibson case & case candy, plus a really luxurious Gibson leather strap. Now SOLD I bought this from Hamster (one of Basschat's finest I have to say ) about 6 months ago and have only used it for just a couple of rehearsals in that time. Here's what he had to say about the bass in his ad, and I hope he won't mind me quoting him because it sums up the bass really well...: "...Made in USA, passive and versatile. Feels really light on the strap - 8lb 12oz. Bought on a whim, used less than 6 times so virtually as new with case and case candy." I bought the bass because I'd started using Gibson & Thunderbird style basses in the last year as they seem to fit my band's music really well, so figured it'd be cool to try a Gibson 5 string, especially with it being a 34" scale 5 string.. . And although a little sceptical at first having always used Fender or Fender style 5ers, I wasn't disappointed when I got this one because it is really light and for a passive bass, it's tonally very versatile. It's also a very comfortable fit being a 34" neck. YouTube Clips: In terms of tone, these are the YouTube clips that persuaded me to give this bass a try and the Billy Fuller one especially is worth watching just to see how a bass demo should be done IMHO! : Gibson says:- Five-String EB Bass Gibson’s EB bass has been a trusted favorite of rock, blues and pop players since the early ’60s, so it’s only natural that this legendary Gibson four-string should form the foundation of a remarkably versatile new five-string. The Five-String EB Bass from Gibson USA morphs the original EB’s SG-inspired body into a rounder offset-double-cutaway design crafted from premium tonewood, yielding supreme playing comfort coupled with greatly enhanced resonance and sustain. Add a pair of newly designed EB Bass pickups with push-pull coil taps and a rock-solid Babicz™ Full Contact® bridge, and the Five-String EB Bass is ready to lay down the rumble or purr with sweetness—and anything in between. It looks great, too, in your choice of Vintage Gloss Natural or Vintage Gloss Fireburst, in genuine nitrocellulose lacquer, with unique tortoiseshell pickguard. Play it—and feel it—now at your authorized Gibson USA dealer. Body and Neck The Five-String EB Bass’s massive foundation lies in its solid Grade-A ash body and glued-in maple neck. Ash has long been respected for its open, resonant tone, and lends itself perfectly to a rich, versatile-voiced bass. A glued-in solid Grade-A maple neck adds punch and clarity, while adding superb playability with its rounded profile that measures 0.800” at the 1st fret and 0.900” at the 12th. Its unbound genuine rosewood fingerboard follows the full 34” scale length, and carries 20 medium jumbo frets, all easily reached by the playing hand thanks to the Five-String EB Bass’s new offset double-cutaway styling. Up at the other end, a five-string take on the traditional Gibson headstock is backed by a subtle volute for added strength. Pickups and Electronics The Five-String EB Bass’s broad sonic range and gut-thumping power comes from an incredible pair of new EB Bass pickups designed by pickup specialist Jim DeCola. These units blend genuine Alnico V rod magnets with proprietary winding methods and other materials for an impressively versatile performance, taking you from thundering rumble to silky purr on demand. Blended as desired via independent volume controls and a master tone control, they’re wound for warmth and clarity in the neck position, and a hotter, punchier tone in the bridge position for maximum rumble—or blend infinitely at will to create your own sonic brew. And just pop up the push-pull switch on either pickup’s volume control for brighter, tighter single-coil sounds. Hardware and Plastics A sophisticated, highly engineered Babicz™ Full Contact® bass bridge feeds these incredible pickups with the optimum clarity and sustain, while being easily adjustable for perfect intonation—completing a new Five-String EB Bass that looks and feels entirely “classic,” yet offers a versatile contemporary performance that every modern bassist will appreciate. Quality Grover™ sealed-gear tuners provide optimum tuning efficiency. The Five-String EB Bass carries a stylish plastic tortoise pickguard, a traditional bell truss-rod cover, and black Top-Hat knobs with silver Volume and Tone inserts. Cases and Coverage Each Five-String EB Bass includes a Gibson hardshell case and owner’s manual, and is covered by Gibson’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service. Condition: The bass is in really superb condition but there is one quite nasty ding on the edge of the body, which you can see in the album of photos here. The case and strap are also in great condition. Selling because...: I'm selling only because of an imminent house move and car purchase and, because I have two other 5 string basses already which I want to keep for sentimental reasons as much as anything else, then this one has to go unfortunately. If that weren't the case, then I'd be more than happy to keep this because it's surprisingly nice & comfortable 5 string Bass. Price: In terms of price, I'm looking for £525 (or near offer) for the bass, case & strap, not including any postage costs. Other stuff: Viewings welcome if you're near enough to Littlehampton, West Sussex (tea/coffee/biscuits provided), and I'd also be happy to work something out about travelling if it's within a 50 mile radius.. I'm happy to post (for an additional cost) but there's always a risk with that which I'd prefer not to have to do if possible. Thanks for looking and if you need any more info, please PM me. I do have a feedback thread too, so please check that out if you don't know me and want to check out my credentials on Basschat.. Cheers Nik

Bergantino AE212 cab with cover - now SOLD *** Not getting much joy trying to sell this on here as part of a combined for sale ad with the Mesa Boogie Big Block I'm also selling, so I've decided to feature this separately with some new photos to try to tempt in an offer or two.. I bought this cab from Dvisions just before the New Year and have used it for just a handful of gigs in that time. It's in perfect working order, it's a perfect 1-cab solution for the modern day gigging bassist being that it's very clean, detailed and accurate sounding, with excellent dispersion and it handles 600 watts at 4 ohms. The other good thing is that it's relatively lightweight (55 lbs) and has a small onstage footprint! There's loads of really helpful reviews and stuff on Google, YouTube, Talkbass etc about the cab so I won't post any links, but suffice to say, if you want to get more info about this cab, it's definitely out there! Bergantino Blurb as follows: " ... Based on the hugely successful AE112 this vertically oriented cabinet is designed as a one cab solution for those looking for a big sound with low weight. With sparkling high end details, plenty of smooth mid-range energy and deep low end the AE212 will deliver a huge sound in a relatively compact and easy to move cabinet. Utilising Bergantino own custom Neodymium drivers you can achieve effortless and controlled sound at any volume. We suggest using a minimum of a 500w at 4Ω amp but this cab will thrive on amps of up to 1000w." Model AE212 specifications: 2 x 12" Custom Neodymium drivers with 7 oz magnets, high intelligibility 1" tweeter, custom phase - coherent crossover with tweeter level control, power handling - 600 watts rms, frequency response: 40hz - 15khz, sensitivity: 103 db @ 1 Watt/1 meter, 2 x 1/4" and 2 x neutrik connectors, impedance: 4 ohms, dimensions: 31"H x 18-1/2"W x 15"D / 78cm x 47cm x 38cm, weight: 55lbs/25 Kgs. I've posted some photos here but if you need to see more, you can click here. Only selling because a) I'm using my Ampeg amp & cabs more, b) imminent house purchase is straining the finances somewhat and c) I've just had to buy a new car. So, something has had to give, hence this being up for sale. As stated, I need to raise funds so I'm not looking for trades at this time, sorry. Price is £500 or near offer. Viewings welcome if you're near Littlehampton, West Sussex (tea/coffee/biscuits provided). Happy to work something out about travelling if it's within a 50 mile radius.. I've posted large cabs & amps before (for an additional cost) and could be persuaded to do so again, but there's always a risk with that which I'd prefer not to have to do if possible. Thanks for looking and if you need more info, please PM me. I do have a feedback thread too, so please check that out if you don't know me and want to check out my credentials on Basschat.. Cheers Nik

Got a chance to see chimike play at the Black Horse in Clymping, West Sussex on Friday with his band and they were fantastic! Think they're called 'The Nothing Yet Band'. Their Set List included stuff by James Brown, Doobie Brothers, Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Righteous Brothers etc - songs you either wanted to dance to or sing along with - it was great. Mike was totally in the groove from start to finish and played everything with real aplomb. Here's a very poor quality photo ...

My first real band in 1977 was a 3 piece, so there was a lot of scope for the bass to add melodic lines in the songs, so I often found myself playing in the upper registers.. Looking back, there were a lot of bassists around at the time who played like that, so I guess I just found what they did really inspiring. Those players - such as Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper) in particular, Chris Squire (Yes), Leigh Gorman (BowWowWow), Steven Severin (Siouxsie & The Banshees and John Gustafson (Roxy Music) for example - made the role of the bass much more interesting to me by creating bass lines that either the whole song was built on, or hooks and lead melodies that made the overall songs more compelling. Jean Jaques Burnel of The Stranglers was really good at that too.. Every now and again you'd get a bass solo that'd really jump out, like Graham Gouldman's solo in 10cc's 'I'm Not in Love', or John Gustafson's solo in Roxy Music's 'Song For Europe', and of course John Entwhistle's solo in 'My Generation - they were important reference points for me as a young bass player. But it was only later on that I really began to appreciate players like McCartney and Jamerson who's melodic basslines were (for me) the real magic in the song and were in effect, almost a solo instrumental part from start to finish. I thought I'd settled down over the years and become much less likely to be playing up in the so-called dusty end, but this photo that Mrs Silverfoxnik took of my band last summer shows that I've really not grown up at all! 😁

Selling via Reverb: any experience/opinions to share?
silverfoxnik replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
Sorry to hear about those EvilBay problems, Chris.. Fingers crossed that it gets sorted out for you eventually. I've never bought or sold on Reverb so can't comment from experience specifically, but I imagine there's potential problems there particularly with international transactions. Basschat is still the place where I prefer to sell gear, but the market is so incredibly slow at the moment. -

Nope; all my gear is gigged remorselessly. Every now and then, if I'm feeling a little sentimental and overly generous, some of my gear may get the occasional clean up with a bit of Pledge and post gig spittle.

+1 to the OP For me, I've had over 12 years and counting on Bassworld, Basstalk and Basschat collectively, and had almost overwhelmingly positive experiences when buying and selling gear. And though there's only been a couple of instances in all that time which had problems - both caused by Courierbot error I might add - things were amicably resolved in typical Basschatter fashion, i.e. through good communications. On more than one occasion, people have loaned gear to me to try out at my leisure and that's been an invaluable resource, especially when that evil-eyed GAS monkey is getting the better of me! Happy to say I've made a few good friends on here too, often through buying/selling, but also at the various Bass Bashes I've been to. Gotta say... the Mods deserve a lot of credit for keeping this place in good shape; without that constantly care and attention, I think it could quite easily slip a little. But most of all, I think it's a great community on Basschat because bass players are all about building good stuff from the ground up, and bringing folk together - it's just what we do! ☺

What song or songs inspired you to pick up the Bass?
silverfoxnik replied to BobW61's topic in General Discussion
Love Blue Turk ! In fact almost any of Dennis Dunaway's bass lines on School's Out are great.. Luney Tune and Gutter Cat vs The Jets in particular. ☺ -
Guillaume has just bought a 90s Squier P Bass from me in a deal that went very well.. He was a good communicator throughout and that always makes a difference in my book - especially when you're shipping internationally, which I was in this case. And everything else went well too, including a safe delivery by UPS within the two day timeframe they promised. So, summing up, I'm very happy to recommend Guillaume to those that don't know him on Basschat. Cheers Guillaume and I hope you enjoy the bass! ☺
-
Likewise, I bought some DR strings from Darren and apart from being great value for money, they arrived in double-quick time! Would be very happy to deal with Darren again. And to recommend him to all on Basschat. Thanks Darren ☺
