  1. Great story @northstreet - and one many of us on here can relate to.... My golden jubilee will be next year and now you've mentioned it, it's made me think about how I'd like to celebrate it...?? ๐Ÿค” Meanwhile, whilst pondering that, I just wanted to comment on the three musicians you've mentioned as your inspiration, Macca, Entwistle and Stevie Wonder - what an incredible trio they are...! Personally, I love Macca and Entwistle's bass playing and they rightly get a lot of praise (and someimes flak) for it.. But in some ways, I have even more admiration for Stevie Wonder, who IMHO, is one of the best bass players, and best bassline composers, of the last 50+ years or so.... His run of albums in the 1970s was just astonishing and are full of incredible basslines... Anyway, just to say I hope you enjoy your next few gigging years, and thanks for sharing your story !
  2. Sounds great - looks 'cool as' too! ๐Ÿ˜Ž Congrats!
  3. Oh my goodness - I've only just heard this news about Nick. Like many others here , I had absolutely no idea about his battle with cancer, which yet again, has taken one of the good ones far too soon. I am truly shocked and saddened... Despite never buying and selling basses from each other, I had plenty of comms with Nick over the last 18 years or so, which were always a pleasure... He was a gentleman through and through and his kindness was only marginally secondary to his love of music and basses, I'd say. Sending my sincere condolences to his wife and family. RIP Nick - you are, already, very much missed! ๐Ÿ˜ฅ
  4. That's totally cool, Steve... We're all entitled to like what we like, play how we like and not like, etc, etc.. IMHO, we're lucky there's so much great music and great players to enjoy and be inspired by.
  5. What a stunning looking bass! ๐Ÿ˜Š GLWTS... ๐Ÿ‘
  6. Welcome to Basschat, Dudley... ๐Ÿ˜Š And best of luck with the sale! Having just bought one of these, I can testify to how amazing they sound - as I'm sure @rambamwill, who I bought mine from. Your description of the amp says it all really, but I'd just add how impressed I am with the 5 way voicing switch - it's such a useful facility to have if you want to make significant tonal changes on the fly , mid-gig, mid-rehearsal as it were.... This also has the very cool looking Mesa sleeve, which makes it even more of a bargain price IMHO. Anyway, GLWTS as I said... ๐Ÿ‘ Nik
  7. Not sure I get that reference, Steve.. ๐Ÿค” There's been a lot of mention in this thread about how a bass players primary role is to 'play (or support) the song' , which is an assertion I pretty much agree with. But equally, as a listening, creative musician, you also have to 'play the band' as well... Only my opinion of course, but I think Entwistle's style and approach to bass playing and creating bass lines, played the band context he was in perfectly. His playing next to Keith Moon's, created something different, something that set The Who apart from other bands.. Not dissimilar to JPJ and John Bonham in Led Zep, for example. In both cases, those two rhythm sections had a unique approach that elevated the band's music beyond the norm, and beyond others - hence why we still talk about them today. Doesnโ€™t mean we all have to like it, but I personally respect that level of creativity and ambition. On a similar note, I'm a huge fan of James Jamerson's playing. And his approach was something different as well - for example, the bass line on 'What's Going On' is a masterclass to me... But I think it's fair to say that what he played on that song isn't what 99% of other bass players would have played on that it.. Yet, it's (quite rightly) celebrated as a work of bass playing genius... Just my 2p worth of course. And there are loads of renowned bass players who 'I don't get', or like, or care for. But what I would say is that there's always something you can learn from those people that helps improve your own playing, or musical creativity, even just a little ...
  8. Very true! What's that old British saying about 'not getting ideas above your station!'
  9. Just bought a rack case from @Lukasz Chyla, which was very fairly priced and arrived almost before you could say 'Special Delivery'! Super fast comms too from Lukasz, so all round, a great experience. So, I'm more than happy to highly recommended Lukasz to one and all here on Basschat... ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š Thanks again Lukasz, and here's to the next one! Cheers Nik
  10. Yes, I believe it was...
  11. Ah, this thread has really made me laugh... ๐Ÿ˜‚ And there was me thinking all these years that bass players, of all the muso stereotypes, were the respectful, thoughtful, intelligent, accepting Folk ... But no. What a moany bunch of hateful, hobbity, gollumy bass players we all are.... ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฃ Having said that, and especially after earlier mention of the awful cod-reggae forced on the entire worId by UB40, I can't believe we've got 8 pages into this thread without no one mentioning the entire back catalogues of: Jamiroqouai and Vulfpeck Hearing 'music' (potential Trade Descriptions Act warning here) by either of those 2 cod-funk peddlers leaves me utterly, utterly cold and makes me despair... Just my opinion of course, but a I reckon that a drum machine, a sequencer and a vocoder left alone in a darkened studio for a couple of days, could create music with more emotion than either of those 2 faux-funk bands.. And to continue in this grumpy vein, I also think most solo albums by 'virtuoso' bass players should be consigned to Room 101. Right, I'll get my coat now and exit quickly....
  12. Stunning! Yet another briansbrew beauty... Where did you/do you find them all, Brian? GLWTS ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š
  13. Hi @Plusnine Thanks for your kind words and offer of a trade... Your SBV looks great; very cool, retro vibes. But having said that, it's not something I have a need of at the moment as it's similar to a Jazz bass tonally I understand, and I recently bought one of those which I'm really happy with... Sorry and best of luck with your sale! Cheers Nik
  14. Oh my, what a bass, what a story!! We've all been there - well I have, that's for sure... So, I feel your pain @Devers95, I really do. Anyway, it looks like a beautiful instrument and best of luck with the sale!
  15. Couldn't agree more.. I'm really surprised this is still here, especially at such a reasonable price point. GLWTS
  16. Thanks Lukasz That's perfect... How much would it be including shipping to SG19 2LT? Thanks Nik
  17. Hi there @Lukasz Chyla I'm interested in your case... Please can you tell me how deep it is? Many thanks, Nik
  18. That's a beauty! GLWTS ๐Ÿ‘
  19. Wow - 2 more weeks gone by since I last bumped this bass.. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ So here's an Easter BUMP for this classic P Bass! ๐Ÿ˜Ž Happy to entertain sensible offers.. or even, interesting trades (quality cabs, short scale bssses etc..) ๐Ÿ‘ Thanks for looking and Happy Easter!
  20. Amen! GLWTS Brian...
  21. These are such fabulous instruments... GLWTS
  22. That's a stunning looking bass, Brian! Looks like it's very well made too... GLWTS
  23. Had the pleasure of meeting @rambam, aka Roy, on Friday to buy his amazing Mesa Carbine from him. Had to laugh when I noticed, sitting there unobtrusively in Roy's man cave, was a Handbox all-valve beauty of an amp (that's recently been bought here on Basschat), that's replacing the Carbine... ... Such is the gear merry-go-round here on Basschat! ๐Ÿ˜ That aside, Roy's a great person to deal with - great comms, very welcoming and his gear is extremely well looked after!.. So, very highly recommended to one and all here on the forum. ๐Ÿ‘ Gotta also say that he's a fine player, with a couple of fab basses on display, including a stunning vintage Ricky! Very GAS inducing... As for the Carbine - it's absolutely great thank you Roy, and I can't wait to gig it soon. Thanks again and all the best, Cheers Nik
  24. Wow - another week gone by. So... To celebrate Man Utd actually showing a bit of fighting spirit for once this season, here's a Sunday evening BUMP for this cool, classic P Bass! ๐Ÿ˜Ž Happy to entertain sensible offers by the way.. ๐Ÿ‘
  25. Thanks Andy, T'was my pleasure , Sir! The proceeds have gone towards the costs of a recent addition to my (should be shrinking, but is in fact, growing) bass collection... ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Š
