Colour me interested (pending approval ) I can bring a few ACG basses, currently 2 x 33" 5 strings (one fretless and currently for sale ), 1 x 31.5" headless 6 string and 1 x 31.5 4 string. Cheers, Eude
Great! The more gear the merrier! -
I don't think 'invisible' is necessarily a negative comment. If you're doing your job right, i.e. playing for the song, keeping it minimal, making tasteful note choices, sitting in the mix and locking in with the drums then what's the problem? You've turned up, you're in tune, you're playing in time, you're having fun and you're getting paid. Life is good! Bass players I've seen who deliberately stick their heads above the parapet, play too much/too loudly/out of time and/or don't listen to what their band mates are doing are inevitably bloody awful and would be better off with a guitar. Or possibly a broom.
I agree with you.. Though it hopefully has made for a mildly interesting thread on here, in truth, I'm quite happy to be the 'invisible' one in the band because - as you say - it really means that we're doing our job properly. And of course, we all know this is true anyway: http://m.independent.com/news/2014/nov/19/dating-musician-i-recommend-bass-players/?templates=mobile

Another Saturday morning BUMP! Given the old saying 'a week is a long time in politics' I'm not sure what, if anything, will be left of our established political structures by the time we get to this Bash in September?? -
That Silverfoxnik chap implied I was 'distinctive' the other day . I took it as a great compliment, of course, as Nik is a knowledgeable geezer and cool player himself. Best backhanded compliment recently was when a drunk punter slurred that we were the 'best amateur band' he'd ever seen... What type of player am I? Punctual.
Very true, I did say that Wal, but IMHO, your playing is much more than just 'distinctive' - though that's no mean feat in itself - and it's so much more than 'punctual'.. I remember watching you play a few years back when chimike was there too, and we both said what a pleasure it was listening to you play; I think Mike's phrase at the time was you were' on the money!
Somebody once said to me "You're a great bass playing with me so I must be doing something half right at least. I think of myself as a better band member than a bass player. p.s. Enjoy your hols!
Thanks! Good point too; being part of the band and helping to make it as good as it can be, is the most important thing..

Morning all, Going on holiday to the Isle of Wight for a week and before leaving later today I thought I'd post this question, just in case it hasn't been asked before as I've been mulling on it for some time recently? Some years ago I was doing a gig in Worthing and a guy came up to me afterwards to talk to me about the band.. He started by telling me how great we were (which was nice to hear of course) and then he proceed to tell me about the strengths of the musicians in the band, starting with how great a performer the singer was, what a brilliant lead guitarist we had, how amazing our drummer was and how cool it was to have a keyboard player so we could be more be diverse with our song selection, blah, blah, blah, blah , blah... You know how it can be sometime after a gig... Anyway, then he looked and me and said ... " Er...Yeah, and you're, you know, kind of really good because, well, no one really notices you or knows you're there. Which is good right, 'cos that's how a bass player should be, right? " My immediate thought at that moment was to send him in the direction of the Foreign Office, but then afterwards, i remember thinking to myself: 'So what kind of bass player am I? Clearly an invisible one! And more than that, how do people see/hear me as a bass player?' Obviously, my dreams of being a stand-out, virtuoso kind of bass player took a back seat many, many years ago, but I thought I had made it a little further up the ladder than just being 'invisible!' Even if he'd have said something like 'solid', I'd have been a little happier.. In fact, the whole episode reminded me once of a drummer I worked with who said i was 'pretty solid as a player.' So, my non too serious question is: "How do other people describe your bass playing and in contrast to that, what kind of bass player are you or do you think you are?" My answer to that of course is that I am described as 'invisible' , yet the kind of bass player I am (in my head that is) is that I am 'a creative and musical bass player, with good timekeeping'. How did the two ever become so far apart?? Nik

That's a shame Pete! Maybe next year... Hope all's well by the way? -
I have the V4BH 100w head and it is a fabulous sounding amp, and works well with all my basses - 4 or 5 string, active or passive. It's more than loud enough for me when gigging with a band with 2 guitarists playing everything at No 11 - from Led Zep to AC/DC to Kaiser Chiefs and the Arctic Monkeys. I don't know why I never tried one out before but quite frankly, it's the best bit of bass kit I've ever bought. GLWTS

Surprised to see this back up for sale, but always a pleasure to see it looking so fine on my sofa... It's a very well made bass from an excellent maker and my recollection of it is that it sounded and played great and build quality was second to none! At the time, I moved it on because I was struggling to adapt to a 35" scale neck, but that's the only reason. Tonally it was very versatile and I particularly liked it's passive tone. The B string was superb and it sounded very even across all the strings too. Funny thing is, I now have two 35" scale 5 string basses. Anyway, suffice to say that fluffo is a great guy to deal with so rest assured on that score! GLWTS -
Just need to correct the last post made by jabba_the_gut as Grangur and myself were (mistakenly I'm sure ) removed from the list. Ooh look, just one more needed to hit the big three-oh!
Thanks Stevie! A couple of years ago, we had about 70 people through the door on the day - I think it was when Dave Swift & Paul Geary came and did a talk.. So, being an eternal optimist, I'm hoping we can kind of match that this year or maybe exceed it.. Which would be good given it's the 10th one and all.. -
Really enjoying this show, actually. Peter Hook is a cool dude. Absolutely loved The Caffreys; doing 'Don't You Want Me' in Sheffield was a stroke of genius! And great to see WoT doing his thing..
This is a weekend I have my son so will play it by ear, I've missed so many now I really want to come along but I can't see Theo enjoying it for more than ten minutes
It'd be great to see you Merton, but a Bash is not the most child friendly of environments, I agree. Maybe we need a crèche? -

Saturday morning BUMP! -
Very, very long story short... Muzz bought a Tech 21 Landmark 300 head from me back in March that got damaged in transit. UPS was the courier (booked via Interparcel) and given that it was very well packaged up and in it's own flight case, they really must have thrown it around to cause the damage they did! Moving swiftly on.. It's taken the best part of 3 months to have the insurance claim go through, and the amp has been repaired now - though that work was done almost immediately because I wanted to ensure Muzz could use the amp safely. Anyway, through that long and very drawn out process, Muzz has been an absolute pleasure to deal with; very helpful in terms of making the claim, very patient and good-humoured, and most important of all, very understanding of the situation. In addition, Muzz has been extremely honest and fair over everything and I really can't recommend him highly enough to everyone here on Basschat! Deal with in absolute and complete confidence.. Thanks very much Mark; not the most pleasant of situations, but thanks for everything and making it so much better than it could have been. Cheers Nik
