GDAE, and always tune it when on its stand, not when 'wearing' it, because both basses are long scale..... And re musicbassman's last comment, standing up, if anyone's interested!
-
Surely they would do the plopping?

I played drums in my youth (50+ years ago!), both kit and military style side drum, and a couple of years ago took drum lessons for about a year. Our church band is on a rota basis, and we had a new, brilliant, drummer join. First time we played together he asked if I played drums, as he detected an affinity in my bass playing. So maybe for me, the answer to the OP's question is yes?

No, it’s not just you. Even at her height I didn’t rate her. Too 'warbly' for me.

I posted a brief comment on another thread about playing acoustically, and doing so piqued my interest, so I thought I’d share it. I play bass in a purely jamming/hobby/non-gigging band (by choice, as we’re mostly in our 70s!), but have decent soundproofed facilities, with full PA, drum kit etc, so we don’t spare the volume when rehearsing. But we gave our first 'performance' last night, in front of our wives (!) in a living room, so went acoustic. No mikes, the drummer used a drum box and tambourine, I did use an amp, but very low. To our surprise, we thoroughly enjoyed it, even though any mistakes tended to be more obvious, not that there were that many.....

Funnily enough I played a short scale Encore bass last night! I’d sold it about 10 years ago to a pal who is now a bandmate, and we did a few songs acoustically (apart from the bass) at the band’s Christmas party at his house. Certainly a lot easier in a small room than my long scale EB3. And it fits into a standard Hiscox case - probably worth more than the bass - meant for a Strat-style six string. i also have an Encore solid guitar, which I love the action on.

Our church band lineup is typically Keys, Bass, Drums, acoustic and/or electric guitar, tenor sax, flute, sometimes less, sometimes more. We work on a rota, and rehearse for over an hour before each service. (none of our bass players play like that, tho........)

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2018?
Baxlin replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Nothing wrong with what I bought, just my lack of knowledge! i wanted to go wireless for my in-ears, so I bought a (admittedly fairly budget level) Bluetooth transmitter and 'phones. Worked fine in itself, but I didn’t know that Bluetooth wasn’t instant, having a delay of about half a beat. Not ideal for a bass player! -
Just come home from a concert by a wonderful girl singer, name of Harriet. She’s recently been on tour with Michael Bolton, and been live on Radio 2 a couple of times. Been compared to Karen Carpenter, but deliberately sings no Carpenters' songs...... Well worth a look, IMO

Had great fun yesterday afternoon, our church holds a weekly "community cafe", for local olds/lonelies etc, and had 'community carols' yesterday. In the absence of a keys player, we finished up with two acoustic guitars and bass. Threw in a couple of popular secular Christmas songs, and a good time had by all!

Many many years ago I saw The Alan Price Set at the Top Rank in sunny Donny, only it was winter, and one of their vehicles had an accident on the way. So they arrived without drummer and bassist. So as not to let the crowd down, they recruited the house band's drummer, and AP played the bass part on keyboard, at the same time as singing, playing keys, and leading the drummer. Brilliant.

A Cry For Help - Improvising Bass Lines on the Fly
Baxlin replied to PatrickJ's topic in Theory and Technique
Thanks for this thread. I find myself in a similar position at times, I play in bands with several music teachers...... At a recent session, I just started playing the melody, and the rest joined in, with I suppose 'variations' rather than jamming, but there was more predictability. -
Is this another case of PC gone mad? One complaint and the rest of humanity, sorry, hupersonity, has to suffer? Apparently the reason for this is that it’s considered to portray entrapment of women for sexual purposes. The thought that she might be very keen, but just playing hard to get, seems to have been lost in the translation, along with the fact it’s a very good song!

I did it quite successfully onan Oldfield which I bought solely for this purpose. As the fretboard was black, I carefully masked the rest of the instrument, and sprayed it with satin black aerosol paint.

Alvin Lee (Ten Year’s after) and his red Gibson, complete with Ban the Bomb sticker, IIRC.

Willie Nelson and his Martin?

Started rehearsals for our Christmas choir last night, must admit although I sing bass, I hadn’t thought that this would improve my bass playing. I'll look at John Rutter's arrangements more carefully now!
-
Thanks, I thought as much. Worth a try though. Thing is, I don’t want to spend shed loads of money when I only use it for a couple of hours max a week!

In our Church band we use individual MEI mixer/monitors, with wired in-ear phones. In an attempt to go wireless, I bought a small Bluetooth transmitter to plug into the MEI output, and Bluetooth phones. Unfortunately, while they pair up ok, there’s about a half beat delay between playing a note and hearing it, which is not good for a bass player.....☹️ Does Bluetooth always have this? Anything I can do, other than forget it? Thanks

Nobody’s mentioned a player with a bit of skill.....🎶

I’ve always taped/tied a full length piece of 2x1 timber to any that I’ve 'posted', as an extra precaution, either inside or outside the gig bag.

The original member I think is Pete (Langford ?), who now takes the lead role. 60 years seems a good time to bow out, methinks.

Barron Knights in Chesham last night. Brilliant musicians, they announced they will be stopping touring next year.

Anybody know what this used to be?
Baxlin replied to lemmywinks's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
That’s what I meant by losing a fret, chop it below the break. Short short scale? Oh, and defret it. Ditto on the type of project. Edit: wonder if the neck's even straight......Was thinking about a punt, but don’t think I’ll bother after all. -

Might be worth twenty quid just to see it in the flesh? Then chop the top off to below the break, lose one fret, sort the truss rod (is there one?), and make it look like a headless. I’m tempted. Then maybe not.
