South East Bass Bash No.7, Surrey, Saturday 21st September 2013
Steve Woodcock replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
Looks like I'll be able to make this. Not sure if there'll be space for me to bring anything with me though. -
Most of what I've said about playing bass on here is bollocks.
I'm also going to give a big shout out for Steve Woodcock too (Stickman on BC). Also an amazing player on bass and Chapman Stick, and an ace tutor. I chose Jake over Steve because of certain peculiarities I have that Jake is able to rip apart. This is no reflection on Steve at all, it's just specific to my particular learning needs and my personality that I chose Jake. Steve is brilliant at explaining theory and demonstrating practical application, and have no hesitation in recommending you check him out if you want a tutor for any level of experience. He's in West London. http://basschat.co.u...in-west-london/
Hey Nige, I just spotted your post - thanks for the kind words. Glad the lessons are going well with Jake, I've heard nothing but good things about him on here! -
You need to add chord tones to that list.

Finger style technique - right hand balance?
Steve Woodcock replied to foxton4001's topic in Theory and Technique
No, it is not a good technique and has nothing to do with 'balance'; it is quite inefficient. Try this as a demonstration: Let your hand rest naturally, palm down on your lap - how does it look? Are there any 'saluting' fingers? No, I would suspect that the fingers all have a slight curl to them. This is how your hand feels when it is relaxed. Now stick your little finger up straight - can you immediately feel the tension and a little strain perhaps? With this tension present in the hand and forearm any other movement you are trying to execute will be hindered. -
Previously, I'd been playing floating thumb and moving my whole hand up and down the strings as I changed the string I was playing - since I'd always been playing a 6 string it was the easiest way I found to play at speed (with my ramp, anyway). Now I'm hardly playing 6ers, I'm back onto my jazz bass and I've found that technique produces very inconsistent notes and its very hard to incorporate dynamics.
Really? I'm surprised as I find the opposite to be true - i.e. floating thumb gives me consistent sounding notes across all strings as it enables me to pluck each string in exactly the same way, using the exact same part of my fingertip, due to the fact that my hand stays in the same shape. Is the struggle more with the loss of ramp perhaps, so you have begun 'digging in' more?
Oh what a damn shame. He was brilliant. Loved his work with Zappa. A very sad loss to his friends and family, and to music
Indeed. I was listening to Over-Nite Sensation just this morning (and Roxy & Elsewhere yesterday).
they were unbelievably good in London at Ronnie Scott's on Monday when I saw them
Argh, I had no idea they were playing!
Just picked one random link from this thread, it was yours.. Some nice phrases and phrasing going on there. Good stuff dude.. Garry
Thanks Garry, nice of you to say.
Are any more of these happening? I think I'd greatly benefit from it.
Hey Nige, I think there is another one starting in about a week - there were a few technical issues and flaws in the course material the first time around so hopefully they've sorted those now. For those interested I scored 100%. If you have the time I think it's worth having a look at, though I found I was spending longer on doing the peer assesments than on my own submissions. It threw up some some interesting concepts along the way but the approach did seem biased toward a scalar approach to improvising - which I don't personally favour - but any opportunity to learn how one of the masters operates should never be turned down, particularly when it's free! -
He was a bit patronising to Tony Levin once, probably not deliberately. Tried to tell him the notes to a difficult fast run on a recording session, but Tony just said play me the run, Al did, Tony heard it, copied it exactly and got a perfect first take.
That story is from Bill Bruford's autobiography isn't it? The track in question is called Calliope from Al's Scenario album (can't find it on youtube but I think it is on Spotify) - that quote always baffled me a little as there is nothing difficult or fast on it.
Mate, how was the show? Gutted I couldn't make it
Hey Nige, it was good - I was really impressed with Keneally, a total master and so at ease with the instrument. Unfortunately I was a bit late and missed most of Godsticks though - sorry Dan!

Just to let you know Joe Hubbard is playing at The Boaters in Kingston tonight - as with all Boaters gigs it is free to get in. http://www.boaterslivemusic.com/thismonth/ I shall be there if anyone wants to meet up.
Basschatter Stickman teaches and he's based in Action - I seem to remember seeing posts here to that effect..
Thanks Platypus, yes that's right I teach - I've moved from Acton and am in Ealing Broadway now, just a 10 minute walk from the tube station so easy to get to.
