Lovely Chapman Stick Playing from our very own Stickman
Steve Woodcock replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I always thought that the Chapman was a bit of a voodoo dark art which I'm utterly intimidated by, so it's great to hear one being used to play some incredible music and so well played to boot too.
Ha, thanks - to be honest it intimidates me a bit too most of the time!
I think for me it would be track 2, or 6.
Cool, I was thinking track 6 too - I'll have to finish transcribing it first though as I improvised most of the album!
Steve, you also give bass lessons, right? I might be interested in a few mate if you have space, I'll PM you.
I do indeed matey, drop me a line or give me a call and we can talk about what you want to achieve. -
It's a superb album, there are some truly lush melodies and chord sequences, wickid riffs, world class playing and writing all round. I played it to a friend last night, he made me keep playing it, he got serious thrills from it Top work, Steve, I truly hope the band gets the recognition and success it deserves. Cheers!
Nige, you're too kind mate - cheque's in the post
Mine arrived late last week but I only had my first chance to listen yesterday evening on my way to meet Stuart BassBunny, simply a superb album! shades of Dream Theater / Vai / Maiden / Iona, superbly performed and put together, (interesting thematic concept)!
Cheers Andy, it's always interesting to learn what other people hear in you music as I wouldn't say any of those bands are an influence (except Vai I guess) - Charlie, our old guitarist who now plays in the excellent Haken was a big DT fan though. I'm sure none of the other guys even know who Iona are! Is the Maiden reference in regard to the vocals? Thanks to everyone for the compliments, I think I should do a bass video next! To those guys with the album, any track or part you'd like to see? -
I remember performing this track back when I was at Basstech many years ago as it was part of the 'rock' semester - I indulged my Geddy worship by playing the keyboard part too
Stickman on here plays fretless in his metal/prog band Linearsphere
Ah, you beat me to it!
Linearsphere are interesting. I will check them out properly.
Our guitarist has put up some more samples of the new album on his Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/martin-goulding Anyway, here's another recommendation: Exivious http://www.exivious.net
Ashdown Dual Compressor?
I'm ok for compressors ta - I've got two I rarely/never use! Things I may be interested in include a double gigbag, decent single gigbag, tuner pedal, an overdrive/distortion pedal, synth pedal, phaser pedal, Hipshot BT2, fretless Jazz neck or various books.
Absolutley baffled by it but it's awesome all the same! I dont need the extra notes and all my favourite bands play P basses anyway etc etc
Ha, thanks! I remember being so reluctant to get a 5-string bass - I was perfectly happy with the constraints of 4-strings so I'm not sure how the leap to 10 happened! -
This track reminds me of a cross between Trey Gunn, Steve Vai and Laundry (a Tim Alexander project).
Cool, I don't mind comparisons like that! Laundry is a name I haven't heard in years - I've got an album of theirs somewhere but I haven't listened to it in a long while, I'll have to go back to it now! For those interested here's a promo video of the rest of the album, the above track is the only one I play Stick on - the rest is on fretless bass:
Steve (stickman), being the hugely talented but very modest person he is, posted it in the little-read Stick thread in response to me asking to see it when it was ready. Silly sausage I just had to share it here.
Um, I'd also posted it in the Recording and Show Us Your Playing Videos threads so maybe not that modest! This one seems to be getting the most response so cheers Nige -
This is the very reason why I'm unsure about getting a 12 string Grand Stick - I found I didn't use the really high notes on my 10 string so I could well find the extra two string don't get used & I'd also have the narrower string spacing to contend with as well.
Likewise, the narrower string spacing would definitely be an issue for me as I find the 10-string a bit tight sometimes, that's why I'd like to try a 10-string Grand one day. It would be nice to have an extra string under the left hand sometimes for chordal stuff but I've never missed it on the melody side.

Cheers guys! Glad you like it.
I'll admit I am not a fan of the 'I WILL KILL YOU'voice, but he sings nicely in the other parts.
Ha, I've never heard it described as that before but it made me laugh! -
Cheers Rhys. Dave Swift was selling his 12-string a couple of months back, I don't know if he's sold it yet but if you look for Jim Lampi on facebook he can put you in touch. Yep, mine has got the stickup - I've not tried any of the others but from what I've heard the stickup seems to be the 'classic' Stick sound. The strings are heavy gauge, they're a little harder to bend but I prefer the sound of them for what I do. For this track I had to lower the bass side a tone too so that I could get a low B but it doesn't feel quite as responsive so I may tune it back up. As for the melody side, I experimented with a few different tunings over the years but I settled on baritone as there was a nice crossover of pitches with the bass side so for the kind of 'interlocking' parts I like to play it works out nicely without my hands getting in the way of each other - I also found I was never using the higher notes.
