  1. Ash bodied basses are always modern sounding, zingy & hifi as has already been said. I've had ash basses (thinking about it, I've still got two!) I have two Status basses with walnut front & mahogany back, and they are the best sounding instruments I've ever played! The other S2 I have is Cocobolo with a cherry wood back & that's more 3d sounding and less "fundamental." I also have an S2 5-string in Satin cocobolo with a "maple" phenowood board. This has a different sound again, with the slight maply (is that a word??) clack of the phenowood and the inherently softer sound you get with a bolt on neck. It's very interesting having multiple same brand basses with different wood combinations. They really do all sound quite different. Rich.
  2. Yes, my natural satin cocobolo S2-Classic 5-string has the same effect in daylight. Absolutely gorgeous!
  3. Zigmondo's lovely quilt maple S2-Classic 5er. Photos reproduced with kind permission
  4. I had some fatbeams on my Miller Jazz & they didn't have any form of coloured binding. Lovely strings, though.
  5. I've had a couple of Westfield strats for rental to students & they're fine. So judging by the guitars, I'd say the basses would be fine. Rich.
  6. Just bought the Flecktones Christmas album on iTunes, "Jingle all the way." Utterly amazing as per usual.
  7. How about using Skype? I'm sure a lot of us have built in webcams & exchanging musical ideas would be a possible as well this way.
  8. LOL! Everyone beat me to it on this one. Just been really busy, what with normal weeks' teaching & a full week show last week, then big band gigs this weekend. Never ending! Yes, that's a really nice one, but I've already got an S2 bolt-on 5. Make sure you play a few Sadowskys before you part with this beauty. Nothing much comes close to these in any price range. I've actually done the first Blondie UK sortie this week & they loved the sound and tone of my S2, so I'm now thinking I don't need a Sadowsky. Want is another matter, though! Rich. Oh, thinking about it, do you mind if we put your lovely pics in the Status library on the Gear Porn section?
  9. Actually, I did the first session with "Blondie UK" the other evening & they absolutely loved the tone & sound of my Status SII... Do I need another bass? LOL! Rich.
  10. I have the Japanese TRB-6 II bolt on model & it's stunning! Yes, the sound of these basses is excellent, isn't it? Very hifi sounding & the range of sounds is amazing. Makes any jazz-type bass sound a bit deficient! However, if you want another one I'll swap mine for your Sadowsky Rich.
  11. Luckily I get quite a few gigs like that. Obviously, like everyone else I get days when I play like an utter clunker as well! Seems to be mainly when the band hasn't been playing for a while (this is my rock trio) & suddenly we all instantly gel again. It's a good feeling! Rich.
  12. Given electricity & amplification, my Status S2-Classic. Best all round bass I've ever played! But if there's a lack of electricity & amps I'd take my Ronald Prentice Double Bass. It's a monster!
  13. That really is stunning! Best of luck with the sale
  14. Everyone should have one! I have three, through neck SII, through neck S2-Classic & bolt-on S2-Classic 5-string. Yes, the build quality is superior to practically anything else & nothing else has the same punch & growl. Get those boards pulled up and never look back! Rich.
  15. Hey Josh, that's Barrie's old one, isn't it? How did you enjoy your trip to Henley?
  16. Hopefully quite soon, mate! Still deciding on which way to go at the moment!
  17. Nice, Nick! Especially like the colours on your Highway One Jazz, mate! Rich.
  18. Yes, the quality control is still a bit hit and miss, but if you get a good one they're lovely things. I chose my 08 Precision from two that the store had ordered. Yes, one was iffy with bad lacquer, but the other one was perfect. Definitely a try before you buy instrument.
  19. I've owned both the Geddy & the Miller basses. The Geddy is a lovely looking thing & great sounding. Both have the stock japanese made vintage pickups which are prone to a bit of the earth hum (you don't get this on Americans). The finish on the Geddy is perilously thin. I knocked a lump out of mine on the back & I'm really careful with my instruments! The neck on the Geddy (especially if you use lighter guage strings) is seriously prone to changing shape with the weather due to it being shaved so thin. The finish & detailing on the Miller is astounding & the only real minus is the preamp which can be a bit harsh if you're an eq hooligan like me! I used to run mine passive & put it through my Sadowsky outboard preamp. Fantastic sound! Rich.
  20. I've always lusted after Overwaters ever since I played one of the angular ones about twenty years ago at a local music shop. I played one of the newer five-strings last week at Electro & I was very disappointed. It was very ordinary with nothing distinctive about the sound at all. Could've been any generic bass. Felt very small-bodied to play as well. Sorry to pee on your fireworks, etc! Rich.
  21. Hi Mike, well that thought has crossed my mind & I have played the review model in flamed maple at the factory. They're really nice basses as well. Thing is I really need a wooden neck for this job. It really is the Sadowsky sound I'm after, I'm thinking. Although I did play a Sandberg Panther V at Electro last week & that was fantastic as well! Rich.
  22. Great bass for the money. Period.
  23. As many people on here say, comparing a £200 bass to a £2000 bass often doesn't give you a bass that is literally 10 times better! The Squiers and cheaper Yamahas these days are really good basses. That jazz V you have was also the first bass in the Fender group to get the high mass bridge. An excellent buy Rich.
