1.
I played a neckless bass once. Complete and utter waste of time and it looked RIDICULOUS.
Well, string tension would be a problem!
2. How many of you anti-headless people have actually played one, I wonder...? You may very well reject things on looks, but when the practicalities outweigh your tastes, there's no argument really. Just to show I'm not a one-brand man, I've really loved the look of these since Warwick reissued them this year... I give you the Warwick Nobby Meidel signature bass I love how they've mixed a comparitively low-tech solution with such incredible materials! Rich.
3. On hold, mate! I'm going to have to wait to do a custom order next year for that one. I've just landed a lot of gigs with a Blondie tribute so I'm going to need something a bit more traditional looking. With the Sadowsky pre pedal & some nice DR strings this would sound immense! Roscoe Becks are passive, aren't they??
4.
Oh NOOOO He's soloing..... That means we will have pages upon pages of shitheads slating him.
Love it! On a serious note, you are absolutely right, mate! Rich.
5. Bigwan, you can run the 2000 series passive if it has the original preamp onboard. The toggle switch turns the preamp on and off on these earlier models. It's mainly the later three-band Status models that have the mid selector switch instead. Rich.
6. The bass to the far left in JohnGH's pic is a Status-Graphite S2-Classic bolt-on six in satin cocobolo. I've loved that bass ever since he got it! May get a similar one next year.
7. The current run of Mexican Fender jazz standards are excellent, but as mentioned earlier, you need to try before you buy. I've found Mex's in stores that out play the Americans, but also really rough MIM's as well. Get a good one & you'll get yourself a bargain. There's also the Mexican made classic series 70's jazz bass with the block inlays, binding & repositioned bridge pickup.
8.
Another thing I'd suggest is going to blues jams from as early a time in your development as possible. It's very good for getting over nerves and developing your ear in a live environment. And if you're good, job offers can come out of it.
+1. I was a classical player & learned to improvise & play by ear at blues jams in my late teens. Absolutely fundamental!
9. When Nick & I were at the factory on Friday Rob mentioned that he wasn't very happy with said review, but we'll see. Nick has the review bass at home with him at the moment. He's using it for demos at Music Live at the NEC next week, I think.
10. Wow! I just read the build diary. I assume you're going to be hanging onto this one, then? Lovely bass. I can see a queue of people with tongues hanging out from here!
11. Ooh, nice! Full of art deco vintageness! Bet that sounds incredible! I can't believe the condition of the jazz, either. I haven't had a chance to read the rest of the thread, but has the bass been refinished at all? Rich.
12. After some basic technique stuff and some double bass music, I tend to give people "Crazy little thing called love" by Queen. It's a fun line & really straightforward in the position changes.
13.
My SII classic looks a bit boring compared to some of your King basses. I've added my USA Fender Jazz fitted with Sims custom front and side led's and Badass bridge.
Not at all! My walnut S2 is my main bass! Everyone should have one And your S2 looks stunning in the aquamarine stain with black hardware! Rich.
14. Hi Steve, excellent looking KingBass you have there - One of the earlier ones with the three smaller black controls for the preamp. Is the top wood rosewood or cocobolo? Hey Nick, sell whatever you're not playing! Sounds like you've got to have one! I think the figured claro walnut one we played is the one to have I put my KB on sale for a day and then decided I couldn't part with it! Had a bite too, serious offer from the US! Rich.
15. Looks amazing, but I've just had my frets redressed by Rob Green on one of my basses & it's perfect. I have a feeling that a machine will never replace a craftsman : Rich.
16. As Jay mentioned, on the Status necks you can use either standard strings (clamp them in with gromit screws then cut off the excess) or use the other slots provided for double ball end strings. I'm liking DBE's more and more these days. There's something about being able to change a string in mere seconds!
17. +1 Dood! Standing out from the crowd is a definite plus point for me. Also, having spoken to Nick (doctor_of_the_bass) on Friday, he tried a Streamline at the Status factory & being a bad back sufferer, it was the answer to his prayers!
18. I go for the point of practicality & weight distribution. Headless is king!
19. Bought a nice'n'cheap Yamaha bass from Colin on Friday. Took me an extra couple of hours to get to him due to the rush hour traffic, but arrived at the start of his gig in the end! I even helped to carry their gear in Excellent bass at an excellent price, Col! Many thanks & good to meet you on my big day out! Rich.
20. I liked the comment about the Stradivarius earlier on in this thread - Did you know that Stradivari violins & cellos are mainly sought after by collectors and not players. Nigel Kennedy (for an example) rejected his Strad & found he preferred an Amati violin. In terms of the string instruments I play, I go for modern and bright sounds. My main double bass was made in 1974 & my cello was made in 1979. My oldest relic is a comparitively modern violin made in 1948! It's all down to what the player prefers. In the case of basses, I know a lot of people go on about the "mojo", but I think a lot of it depends on the kind of music you're playing. If you're playing in a blues band perhaps you want that vintage sound, but I still think you can get the same from a modern Fender. Some producers & artists want the "vintage Precision sound" and others are fine with what you like and the sound that you as a player are comfortable with. Me, I like the modern hifi sound, but I guess I've got a little of the history bug as well. My 1990 Status was an emotional buy as I'd sold my 1988 model and wanted a really good early model. But it has no mojo. It's shiny & pretty well like new! Rich.
21. I'm sure he could do an ebony board Electro. Drop him a line or give Status a call on Monday
22. Sounds great. Just had the headphones on for the full effect. Mix is excellent & your 71 Precision sounds really good. Rich.
23. Hey Andy, they are both beauties and you know I've coverted that 5-string Eclipse for a long time, but I've got my KingBass up for sale at the moment so I can fund an S2 6-string. Unfortunately there's no spare money around & I don't have a fretless to trade So best of luck with those, mate. I'm sure someone will snap them up. Pop them onto Statii.com as well. You're sure to get some bites there, mate. Rich.
24. Awesome big band in the first clip & the Michel Camilo Trio are utterly fantastic! Thanks for those. Bilbo & Steve!
