1. Whether it's for the money/fame, or for the experience, go for it. The more styles you can play, the more work as a bass player you'll have. For example, I play classical, jazz, rock, funk, pop, blues, etc. Rich.
2. I've had one of the new American Standards & they're excellent basses. The deluxe model isn't worth the extra outlay, especially due to the aforementioned awful preamp. If you want active, get an Am.Std & order a Sadowsky outboard pre. Or better still, follow Chris's advice. Go Sadowsky Rich.
3. I know what you mean about the fundamental "wooden" sound. The one I like is usually heard on Sadowskys, Foderas & I've more recently heard it on Pedulla Buzz basses. The graphite neck is hugely resonant, though. I think it sounds different at home to the sound you get out at a gig through your main rig. When I'm out, especially with the rock/pop band, nothing cuts through the mix like a graphite necked Status. I find the bottom end is crystal clear with huge punch. So whereas I understand where people are coming from & like the "wood" sound myself (especially on high end instruments!), I still love the crystal clear hifi sound of my Status basses Rich.
4. Ooh, excellent mate! I'll be going down next week to do my own test drive Rich.
5. Loved the sound of it in the clip - It's got that burpy sound that only high-end jazzes like Celinders & Sadowskys seem to manage.
6. Joining the RAF, eh? Best of luck with that
7. 1. Victor Wooten 2. Tal Wilkenfeld 3. Hadrian Feraud As Stanley Clarke said in a recent interview, Victor Wooten is the most complete player on the planet. Tal Wilkenfled has just the most gorgeous feel & sound. Almost perfection without too much flashness. Hadrien Feraud has the most peerlessly seamless technique I've ever seen. Rich.
8. I used to use my S1 a lot as well. It does give a lot more Precision-esque shove & bottom end. Rich.
9. Hey Josh, yes. As far as I know the Spector LX models always have two seperate volume controls & a treble and bass. I'm sure Cetera will correct me if I'm wrong. I've only played these in stores. Rich.
10.
Do they do it by signing up to forums pretending to be a happy punter and then bigging up their own products? Pluck
:brow: Nice one!
11. Seriously cool! As someone else said, especially the shoes! Rich.
12. Dave, if the grub screws are protruding out that far, they aren't in contact with the base of the bridge at all. If you give them a gentle turn clockwise, you'll feel where they start to actually do something. I had a similar problem with my American Precision. Also, have you checked the neck? Fenders often arrive with too much relief. To my mind, a Precision/Jazz neck needs to be almost straight, with the smallest bit of relief towards the tuner end. The tool they supply the bass with is excellent. Just pop it into the recess at the base of the neck & give it a quarter turn clockwise Rich.
13. I'm with Waldo on this one - If it's for sale on Denmark Street it'll be seriously overpriced & for the kind of money they'll be asking, you'd be able to buy two (or more) much better basses. All for a little bit of punk history. Best left to a collector who doesn't actually have to play the things! Rich.
14. A lot depends on the construction. I've played on large suspended stages & as long as there's no "edge panelling" the sound seems to be fine. It's funny someone's brought this up, as I was on a fully enclosed two-tier wooden stage on Saturday for a big charity bash. Because there was no contact between the rig and the ground, the top end frequencies were highly pronounced. I much prefer my bottom 15 cab to be on the the floor. That's where you get the best sound with the best bass reflex (especially if your bass ports are in the rear as mine are!) Rich.
15. I like the look of them, but the basic design is quite staid. Could've been a lot more adventurous, but that said, they are packed with innovative ideas! Rich.
16. Cocobolo seems to vary hugely in colour. My older Status S2 is a very dark cocobolo with straightish grain, whereas my newer S2 5-string is more cedar red with a book-matched curved grain. JohnGH's 6-er is a bit lighter & browner. Rich.
17. When it was new two and a half years ago, my car definitely had the edge. Now it has 130,000 miles on it I think the basses have the edge! Rich.
18. I had a VMJ just after they came out. They're a very nice bass for the money. In fact, I saw one at a local store just yesterday with the most lovely (almost) quilted maple front on it! Gorgeous Rich.
19. Hi John, good to see your lovely S2 6-er again - The only thing at the moment that makes me want to place another order with Rob! Rich.
20. LOL Graham! With Status there's always a next one - These basses should be added to the government's class A illegal drugs list!
21. Now we've got over the nakedness thing (Terri, put your tongue away!), I really liked the video. The chord progression was one of the Marcus Miller tracks, wasn't it? I seem to recall it being part of the "Miller Time" track on the live Victor Wooten Band album. The player had the Marcus Miller sound nailed as well! Rich.
22. Skoda Octavia MkII here - Very adaptable & the boot is absolutely huge. Had a Superb before this one & it was huge in the boot dept., but the aperture was too slim for decent sized amps/cabs. The very best for gear was my Citroen Berlingo. Because it's van based you can fit as much gear as you can dream up in the back, even covered over with the sets up. Have a look at medium MPV's in general. Huge carrying room! Rich.
23. I'd go with you on the Streamline. I've played one & they aren't what you'd call "Status-lite"! It's the full experience and sound in a little package. Awesome! I'd also totally recommend the Corvette $$. I've had two now. Huge punch & possibly the most versatile bass I've ever played. I'm sure the Vigier people on here will have very similar reasons for choosing their instruments as well. Nick (doctor_of_the_bass) has an Arpege as his main player, amongst others. Rich.
24. Lovely looking S2, BassBus! Did you go down to the factory to pick it up? Rich.
25. I've played a couple of these in stores & it seems to be a nice enough instrument. The lit-up pots are quite cool & EF didn't mention in the video that it has a slap ramp on the end of the board as well. I can't help thinking that it's overpriced, though. Look at the spec of the BB-614 which has an active preamp with 3-band eq & is usually around £100 cheaper. Rich.
