I got it sent from the US as soon as it was released. Upon first listening I didn't think it stood up to Victor & Stanley's latest offerings (Palmystery & The Toys Of Men), but as I listen to it more, it's growing on me. There's some great playing on this album & quite surprisingly, it doesn't sound crowded at all. My only complaint is that I was meant to get a free SMV baseball cap with it, which never arrived. I'll have to email the US suppliers. Rich.

Hey Ped! Yes, the new user interface over there is excellent and it has a very fresh & clean look to it. Hats off to Andre! When are we going all modern and iPod-esque, then? Rich.

In the past I'd have said go Japanese without question... Then I had an MIA S1 Jazz & a 2008 American Standard Precision. Surprisingly though, these days I'd have to say that it's down to the individual bass. My 2006 MIM Precision is nicer to play than the 08 Am.Std I sold recently. I'm thinking of Badassing it & adding a Wizard Thumper. Try lots and one will stand out

I still remember that guy's pictures from the old site where his strings and scratch plate were covered in blood from some highly vigorous playing!

SOLD**Fender USA Early 80s P Bass £250

The PHD is a simple rock trio (tried a forth player on a couple of occasions over the years & it just sounds crowded as we're all busy players!) OutToPlayJazz operates from as little as two players, up to as many as nine. Depends what the customer can afford. Typical setup is piano, bass, drums, vocals, trumpet & sax. My new band is a bit of an oddity! Have a think about the possibilities with this setup... Piano, bass, drums, marimba/djembe, violin, soprano sax. Oh, and just joined an 18-piece big band

Try contacting either Jon Shuker in Sheffield, Status-Graphite in Essex or Bernie Goodfellow at GB Guitars. All decent luthiers and you'll be entirely happy with the results.

Yes, it is true. My pianist friend has the receipt to prove it. I think it probably got through the net because the Fodera badge is tiny on the headstock. It looks as if it could be a cheap brand bass until you look at the detailing. As for checking whether or not the bass was stolen, that's down to the current owner to decide if it's worth pursuing.

Hey Nick, I really like the red one out of those two. Looks like it has the red tint in the graphite as well Kev, thanks for the lovely comments - I've been playing the phenowood necked 5 for the last two weeks in a show & it's a real performer. Played a jazz gig on it the other week. Excellent bass! Hopefully getting the older one back soon. It's at the factory having it's preamp sorted out and returned to it's original spec now I've sold the U-retro that was in it.

Now that's a Ray I'd actually like to own & play!

A Small Modest Collection For Your Perusal
OutToPlayJazz replied to Mike Brooks's topic in Gear Gallery
Lovely collection, Mike! Especially the GB's, Statiis & Factors -
And you didn't offer to take it off his hands for £100?
LOL! Yes, I did suggest it, but I was honest about it & told him to get it insured for £1500 at least!

Okay, so I'm doing a two week show (Singing in the rain) with an amazing pianist who mentioned the other evening that he'd recently bought this 'bargain' 5-string bass. He brought it tonight, saying that he thought it was a cheap catalogue bass because it had "Empire" on the headstock... Nope, it was a bloody Fodera NYC Empire 5 in translucent blue with a stunning quilt maple top! And the worst part? He got it at Barnsley Cash Converters for £80!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They're $4100 US new! AAARRRGGGHHH!

I'd say that the theory side depends on how far you want to go with the instrument. I always make all my pupils read proper notation & they've all thanked me for it in the end, as it opens up so many more possibilities for you as a player. Not least in terms of work opportunities further down the line. By the way you explained your process of learning up to now, it seems you're doing fine as you are, but a little inside knowledge is always a good thing

If you offer it around for about £250, it'll get snapped up by one of the Status lovers & they'll probably get Rob to refret & refinish it. In fully restored condition it'd be a lovely bass.

Hey Pete, love the rig! That all-black Precision is a real looker, too! Rich.

I'm still lusting after this one, but it's a real pity it has the 16.5mm string spacing. Otherwise it would be mine!

Status basses - how versatile are they ?.
OutToPlayJazz replied to Soliloquy's topic in Bass Guitars
Both the S2-Classic & KingBass are extremely versatile. The KingBass has more "boom" to it, but they're both excellent basses. I tend to avoid the mid control and run it in the "flat" central switch position, as I prefer the 2-band sound. I use mine for rock, funk, jazz, shows, you name it! I only have a Yamaha TRB because I can't afford a Status 6-stringer at the moment! Rich. -
Geddy Lee Jazz - One I loved but could never get along with. Neck changed shape with the weather. Horrendous! Yamaha TRB-6 II. Bought on here from Beneath it all for a song. An awesome bass & I still have it now. One of my regular players. Status S2-Classic. This is my current main bass. Stunning in every respect and a sound to die for! Status Energy Artist 5 with graphite neck. I had this for about 5 days before someone on Statii.com persuaded me to sell it! It was really nice as well. One of the last S1 Jazzes in Candy Cola. The best jazz I've ever played. Stunning sound! (Sold to help fund my 1990 Status S2.) My new KingBass. My pride and joy, this one! The bass I traded the really nice Jazz & Corvette for. The most beautiful Status ever! Marcus Miller Jazz. Now traded for Status S2 5-string. 2008 American Standard Precision. A stunning bass, but not for me. Also traded against the S2 5-string. 2008 Status S2-Classic bolt on 5. This is the latest aquisition I think that's enough to be going on with for the time being! Rich.

I'll concentrate on the last couple of years, otherwise we'll literally be here forever! Status SII which I had since 1990. Many other basses in between, but sold to TheMoo in 2006 after... ... My KingBass Artist 5 arrived! (Sold in 2007 to Ian.) My trusty Warwick Triumph EUB. Awesome sound & I play this regularly on jazz jobs. Love it! Midnight Wine MIM Jazz 5 (sold in 2007 to a pupil who is still very happy with it!) Status Groove which I bought from Dub Junkie on these pages. (Later traded in against my Corvette $$) Squier VMJ (also traded in against Warwick $$) Warwick Corvette $$ - Possibly the best all-round bass I've ever played. (Sold to a pupil to raise funds towards my 1990 Status S2.) Jackson CMG Concert Bass. Bought in cheap as a curiosity and traded in against... Ibanez SRX705. Sold on ebay after being gigged once. Hofner Contemporary Violin Bass. Great sounding instrument and only recently traded against my Marcus Miller Jazz. TBC...

*Looks* at the stock page... I think it has to be a headless, neck-thru one so.... I'm betting on the red stain one with black hardware & side led's, or the book-matched cocobolo one with the gold hardware, or the figured walnut/gold hardware one Clearly picturing Nick chanting, "Ah yes, she will be mine... Ah yes, she will be mine...!"
-
Hey Matt, that is truly stunning! I was dubious when you first started talking about a white JayDee, but it really is one of the nicest ones I've seen. Maybe one day I'll have John make me a GA24 like that other one on here.
-
That's really nice, Jon! Now, you're not going to let it go again, are you??
-
Hmmm... I've been thinking about a Stealth II, but I need to play one first. I'm doing my two weeks of "Singing in the rain" on my latest aquisition, the cocobolo S2 5-stringer & it puts me in the mind to perhaps get a sixer in the future, as I really like playing my TRB-6. Perhaps an S2 bolt-on 6 like JohnGH's. Apart from that, I'm all sorted!

Yes, yes... What are you ordering for our trio-lific collection now, Nick? This actually worries me because Moo's just bought a bass. That means if you get one, it's gonna be my turn to furnish Dawn's Harvey Nicholls account
