Hey Josh, the sparkle and quailty of the sound on my KingBass suffers when the strings are a bit dead, probably the same as yours. Put on a set of new hotwires and it sings! I've got to the same point with mine a couple of times, but the new strings reaffirm your faith in the instrument. I'm not sure why it is, but the KingBass is much more resonant than the S2, almost annoyingly so! Perhaps the cavity inside the neck is larger, or the smaller body makes more resonance run through the neck. It is a very individual sounding instrument, though.

How often do you change your strings?
OutToPlayJazz replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Obviously, depends on how much you play. I change strings when the nice clean "zing" has gone. Sometimes a couple of months, sometimes after 3 gigs. -

One is ample, as many of yiu have said. Yes, there's a gap, but that's supposed to be filled by a good bass player & drummer! Any more guitarists just sounds messy!
.. how the hell I'm supposed to 'not follow the guitar'? I've been working with riffs sent over from my guitarist and apparently everything is following the guitar.. no matter how different I try to make it???? Surely the whole point of bass is to hold down the root note (with added flair and pizazz ).... it's doing my head in and really frustrating me as it's making me feel like a sh*t bassist!!! Grrrrrr!
Hey Sarah, At times, you'll literally bounce ideas off the guitarist & others off the drummer. I prefer to link with the drummer personally [said drummer tends to mimic and predict my fills & I do the same!], but I do play 'tag' with our guitarist as well. (Anything you can do, etc...) There are no set rules to how the band gels. Just let it happen naturally. You'll find a mix & general sound of your liking soon enough Also, remember that there will also be times when you can only lay something simple like root notes down. In such cases, we sparkle with our artistic fills. Rich.

Nice pics, Merton!

+1. For the cost of a good repair, you could add a little and have a graphite neck put on the bass.

Hey Mart mate, good to see a full MarkBass rig in your place now! Hope you're as impressed with it as I am with mine That 'Ray looks stunning, btw!

Wound carbon graphite and that growl does it for me... I think I need to lay down for a while!
Just what are you trying to suggest here, Rich? Is this aimed at anyone in particular?
LOL! No one in particular, in fact, mainly me! I can't get along with the playing angle of the Streamline either, beacuse I'm too fat! Rich.

It'll certainly attract a lot of new business to the company! Not my cup of tea, though. I must admit that the one design flaw (is it with the bass or with us flawed humans?) on the current model is that with the body horns being so short, if you're of a more portly nature (like me!) the neck is angling away from you. I think it's a thin person's bass, LOL! That'll be what the main focus of the shape redesign will have been about, to bring the strap attachment point further to the player's left. Not sure what's going on with the j-type pickups, though. It's going to be even more top endy, but will it lose something? Maybe it'll gain some more grit and a little less bass punch?

A few of the new stock basses that took my fancy, from the official website to whet your appetites... KingBass Artist in curly claro walnut, 16.5mm custom string spacing & green front/side led's. S2-Classic bolt-on in high gloss silver with chrome hardware. Headed S2-Classic bolt-on with kahler tremolo bridge. T-Bass without pickguard. 2008 Energy in blue stain.

Biblical sound with no distortion whatsoever! I love mine

Seriously considering selling lots of things
OutToPlayJazz replied to Merton's topic in General Discussion
I think we go through stages... I had a buying phase recently & traded all sorts in against the two Fenders - Which I didn't really need, but I was caught in the bug of the American Standards, etc. As soon as my new Status S2 5-er came up, rationalisation started to occur. Thinking: I'm not going to gig these two, nice though they are, so a different style of Status will get used & it'll earn it's keep! Simple If I were in your position, I'd part with one rig & one groove. Keep the one that's most practical. Then you've got money/room towards the Streamliner! But if you ever sell your Retroactive, I'm afraid Nick & I will have to come round and kill you! -
Oh yes, mate! That curly caro walnut KingBass is just stunning. Pity it's 16.5mm spacing, otherwise I'd be selling bodily organs for that one! I like the S2 with the tremolo bridge as well. Very cool!

My walnut S2-Classic. Came with that instant, "I'm yours" feeling!

It was only a fleeting visit to the factory - Rob & Dawn were at home taking pictures of all the stock basses & redoing the website, so just a drop off this time. Nick, I did think of you as I was passing Peterborough, ahhhh

I do both. French is better for stacatto, spicato & articulation in general, but you can't beat the German for long, powerful legato passages.
-
Here's my pupil's Vox Clubman. It's been refinished at some point & I'm not sure about the chrome bridge cover's authenticity. Nice sounding vintage bass, though.

The Mexican Fender Precision is a great value bass and does the classic P sound very well (you'd hope so given the name on the headstock!) & they're a snip second hand. There's a mint electron blue one on the for sale forums here for £250. Make sure you try the new 2008 American Standard, though. They're very good & have a little something extra to the sound. Difficult to explain, but you'll hear it when you play one. As for copies, the Laklands seem to be the most popular at the moment. The candy apple red Duck Dunn signature is particularly fetching.

Remember that outboard preamps only make a big difference to passive basses. It's only going to overpower an active bass. On the plus side though, my Sadowsky made a massive difference to my Marcus Miller jazz. Running the bass passive through the Sadowsky was ten times better than the internal preamp. I'd hope that the Aguilar does the same kind of excellent job!

You're a good player, just knock something pentatonic or blues-scaley out and fill it with twiddly triplets! As for the thuddy P sound with ancient strings, that's cool at the moment. Listen to all those Amy Winehouse tracks... The bass always sounds like that! With all my zingy hifi sound I'll be consigned to the 80's soon, obviously where I belong!
