1. LOL Nick! I need a seriously big bank balance before I complete the wish list... Status Stealth II Status Streamliner Fodera Monarch Alembic Series II Jaydee GA-24 Sadowsky with Norstrands But seriously, I have to generally keep to what I'm going to play and what is earning it's keep money-wise. There's also space to consider, with double basses, cellos, violins, stage piano, etc, etc, etc...
2. Hey Kev, you seem to be over the moon with the changes the Status neck has made to your 'Ray Could you post us some sound clips when you have a moment? (If you haved the gear to do it!)
3. I find that no matter how much I love my KingBass, I always come back to my SII models. The sound is fuller & the body shape feels 'just right.' Aaaah
4. You have a point there, Steve. If you look at the current model, the body shape is already remeniscent of Stanley Clarke's Alembics.
5. Congrats, StevieC! Are you going to put some pics up?
6. I think I was watching Ed Friedland playing one of these the other day on YouTube, but don't quote me on that one! Interesting looking basses. Aren't these the ones with the locking tuners or something like that? Edit: Here it is...
7. My only experience of Overwater was playing one of the original offset body ones in a shop when I was a student. I can honestly say I fell in love instantly. It was the best feeling and sounding bass I'd ever played up to that point. I haven't played any of the modern ones, but I hope to try a couple at the next bash.
8. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. It's been really informative so far, so please keep it coming. I should be able to get some pics done of my pupil's 60's Vox this week. Will post them as soon as
9. I think I fall into the "I've sold most of them on" category. I do try to be circumspect with my purchases, though. My Status basses are the main players and what I suppose people expect me to be playing most of the time, due to my long association with the brand. I've been through a few jazzes (up to the current Japanese Miller) as I think all bass players should have one & I've finally bought a good Precision as I've actually been asked to play one in sessions in the past & in 25 years of bass playing had never owned one. My TRB-6 is great for jazz and other jobs where I really do need the extra range, or if I'm playing with a load of wind players in flat keys all the time. I think I listed all the ones I've sold or traded over the years on another thread, but still like to try new things. Watch this space... Now about that Status Streamliner... Oh, how about a Stealth? ... Or maybe an Alembic... Jaydee... AAARRRGGGHHH!
10. Yes, the shape is very comfortable, but the shorter body does sit on the strap at a wierd ange if you're of a *ahem* rather rotund nature like me, LOL!
11. Re. the KingBass MkII, I'd say it's going to be sound thinner with even more top end with the J-type pickups. The longer top horn will address the wierd playing angle as well, although I quite like it [playing angle on KB Mk.I], personally. Nick, I like your idea of a 'vintage' 80's range. They'd sell like hot cakes! I'll mention that to Rob when I'm down there next week. Even though I don't have a desire to order one, I think the hype over the KingBass II will fill their order books for some time to come.
12. Martin! That's niiiice And no, I don't want to buy it... I already got one!
13.
The all graphite Series 2000 does it for me. Why did they not make more of these? Did people not like the look or were they too expensive?
The all-graphite S2000 was a single piece moulding version of the SII, basically. I think process-wise they're cheaper to make than the wooden laminate bodied basses. I guess the modern equivalent would be the all-graphite Stealth II. I still GAS for one every now and again (black graphite with gold hardware!) Interestingly, the Stealth II still has the 2-band preamp so it'll sound just like an S2000! Very bright and with huge bite. Something like this one...
14.
Lets hope that Fiat don't start designing basses eh readers? ..the Maracas bass? Rich - did you know that we are today's top posters?!!! I enjoy playing in front of a mirror - good to keep an eye on the technique you know!!
Oh yes, Nick - The mirror makes sure you have the correct LH technique - If you can see the tip of your thumb, thiiis iiis baaad!
15.
hehe! Like I say, it has grown on me! Unlike the Fiat Multipla....!
My jazz band played at the UK launch of the Fiat Multipla at Fiat UK hq in Slough. And yes, it was ugly even then! BTW, I love the look of the Bongo! Especially in that chrome orange. Yum!
16. Excellent! I like to see a bit of good value *Said he with a myriad of expensive boutique basses!*
17.
Oh all right then, twisted me arm! Here's my lurvely GA24 Custom... ('allo again Nick!!)
I think I commented on the GA24 when you got it... But I'll say it again - That is utterly stunning!!!
18. Looking at the red tint SII, it must've been a very close serial number to my old #402 as it even has the little red led for the active on/off switch and the same hardware. Must have been a 1988 build or somewhere around there. Aha! A couple of Nick's pics escaped, as the bass looked so much like one of mine in the photobucket thumbnails! Here's the SII with ebony board... There, my work here is done!
19. Nice! I'll be joining this little 'club' soon
20. Here are some pics kindly donated from the mahoosive bass collection of Nick, aka. Doctor_of_the_bass. Pity he didn't donate the actual basses to me... Series II red tint flamed maple Series II in birdseye maple Series 2000 in black Series 2000 in red (FPPR?) Series 1 Matrix Nick with ex-MK Empathy
21. Nice one, Kev - Ooops, I sound as if I come from Oldham! Speaking of which, MB1 - Where's your KingBass, mate??
22. Do I like the cool well worked jazz bass? Oh yes! Every bass player should have a jazz in their arsenal
23. Yes, I'm planning to be at the big bash in Northants when it comes around again. I think the Streamliner starts at about £1300. Not cheap, but then it is a Status! Hang on! This is meant to be a thread about your cool Jazz!
24. Sounds like you're in a better position now, Sarah. I hate playing in bands with two guitarists. Means you can now put in more as a bass player, too. Play more and shine like the star you are
