1. I use the MU cover. With the membership being only £12 per month, it's worth the £2000 gear cover you get. There's also several millions' worth of public liability thrown in. Luckily I've never had anything taken over the years, but I am very careful. (No planning any heists, okay?!) Someone once tried to steal my 5-string double bass from my VW Jetta many years ago, but they failed as it was 'fed' diagonally through the car & they couldn't figure out how to get it out of the car! Morons
2. Excellent review, BJ I've had the same problem with action on my Precisions, also being a recent P-bass convert. My 08 Am.Std was suffering with the same high action problem (especially at the 12th), where the neck had been set with far too much relief so I straightened out the neck & as you mentioned, put 40-100 strings on. Just perfect. I like my wooden necks set with just a hint of relief towards the top of the neck (headstrock end.) My MIM P was also a little high & I just repeated the same process, but with the standard 45-105 strings. Just nice!
3. Lovely looking bass! I've thinking of a Warwick/Spector with p/j pickups for that certain sound... You need to play some really dirty 70's funk music with a flute part as well... ..."Is your washing machine broken, Madame?"
4. I usually take a Status (as main bass) & the TRB-6 for extended range songs in the Rock Band. Never really need a backup as such. Never had anything die apart from amps on stage, as Stewart mentioned.
5.

Yes, you did tell me a while ago, Si! I'll have to take a rain check for the time being, though. Spent far too much money recently! Rich.
6. That was a cracking deal you got there anyway, mate. Someone's going to get a bargain!
7. Bloody hell Nick! You're taking a hit on this one. How did you get it £100 cheaper than mine? (Although I realise my 3TS finish is an extra £70!) Is the Shuker that good?
8. Nice choice, Chris! It'll make a nice contrast to your Metro
9.
I think if you read his article you'll see that he doesn't say that the wood doesn't make any difference - he says that it doesn't make as much difference as (some) think it does. Firstly, I'm inclined to think that he knows what he is talking about. I also, suspect that I haven't played enough instruments and really thought about it to know any better. The type of hardware, pickup choice and location etc., could *easily* make much more difference than the choice of wood and I'd find it hard to refute if someone claimed that.
Don't forget guys that the author of the article only mentions solid body electrics once in relation to wood choices. It sounds as though he's talking about making classical/accoustic guitars, which by their very nature would be less susceptible to different wood choices, as the wood used in the body would be so thin.
10. Did a trumpet-player friend's wedding at Morley Hayes in Derbyshire. Not at all unusual for the OTPJ crew, but we had my favourite male vocalist, Arch Bishop Mike Watson who croons with the best of them & Matt Dabbs on drums. Matt is ex of signed chart band, Long View. But as a jazzer he's just supreme with so much light and shade, style and sophistication. Possibly the most musical drummer I've ever worked with & that counts quite a few. Did an interesting dinnertime at the Sands Venue in Gainsborough today.(Regular gig.) My usual pianist was away doing something else & I booked a young lad of 19 who I'd briefly encountered on a Wider Opportunities sharing day in NE Lincs. John is studying (going into his second year) at the Leeds College & you can certainly tell the difference between a classically trained player turned jazzer to a REAL jazzer! Most of my players are classical-based as I am, but young John is completely out there with the jazz faries! Certainly took me all my time to keep up with his inversions, etc! Fab weekend playing-wise. Oh, and teaching-wise I had a massive compliment from the parents of a young violinist who's recently come to me at about AB Grade 5-6. They said that after one full hour with me they could hear a massive difference in Jen's playing. Makes you go all fuzzy and warm, doesn't it? And I received the results from a couple of recent grade 1 violin pupils as well. 130 & 137 respectively. Distinctions for everyone! Now that's what I call a weekend. Anyway, I'm going to shut up before this becomes some kind of Me Me Me, Self Self Self type of blog. Oops.........
11. Crazy Kiwi: Hey Steve, just listened to all your basses Love your 'rhythmic' right hand damping - I do that a lot as well. That Cellinder jazz sounds amazing! Rich.
12. Hi Kev, as I said to you earlier in the pm, you'v e got a steal there - And I hadn't even noticed it had led's! Well done again! Rich.
13.
Hi Drew Is it this model? http://www.classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/bas...ender_jazz3.htm
That site you pointed Drew to has some lovely looking Peavey T40's! Quite fancy one of those
14. Interesting thread, this one... I'm inclined to think that you'll hear more of a difference in a single piece body as opposed to a multi-part laminate. Perhaps my examples will be a little extreme, but here goes... 1. Comparing my 1990 Status S2 in cherry with a cocobolo top with my 2007 S2-Classic which has a mahogany body and a walnut top. Perhaps it's mainly because they're both similar construction (graphite neck/spine set into a multi-part laminate body), but they both sound pretty much the same, with similar preamps, highly resonant graphite necks & very similar soapbar pickups. 2. But then consider an alder bodied jazz bass against an ash bodied jazz bass. The difference from both my old Geddy Lee/S1 American series (both alder with maple boards) to my current Marcus Miller is huge. The ash bodied Miller (even when run passive) is much brighter & sharper tone-wise. So perhaps that's the answer. Different woods will make a much bigger difference with a single piece body. Laminates of the same breeding will generally sound the same. Purely un-scientific, so I may be totally wrong!
15.
I'm of the 'best of both worlds variety'
Best of both worlds? That was one of the best ST:TNG episodes
16. Come on, people! Someone buy this - It's a one of a kind & I guarantee you that once you've played a Status, you'll never look back! Nick's a nice guy as well! (But don't tell him I told you
17. Have an extra Sunday morning *BUMP* on me - Fantastic looking bass, Mark!
18. Best of luck in finding your Precision, Steve! I know how it is - I'm just about to get my original Status back
19. Excellent choice, Sir! I wish I'd never sold mine. Possibly the best all round bass I've ever encountered! Biblical sound in series mode, too!
20. I think it's just one of those down periods. It seems to be MusicMan basses & Warwicks that aren't loved these days. That seems to make the prices fall on here. Curiously, Bongos seem to be worth more at the moment. Is it the modernity or the novelty value, I wonder?
21.
OK , I've heard it, in fact I have a copy, and it's actaully a lot better than that naff youtube clip, my one vaguely controversial verdict is that Stanley come off worst for his tone and his playing, while Vic and Marcus groove like crazy and play some really tasty bass, they even 'jam' a version of Classical Thump, which is full of chops but also grooves like crazy and has a real sense of fun about it, Marcus adds some tasty blues licks to the 'classical' ideas and Vic is on it big time. It's also really well produced, has some very musical themes, melodies etc and generally comes over as a very complete project rather than a bass w***fest. M
Excellent Where did you get it from? (I thought it wasn't released in the US until 8th August!) Rich.
22. Also in the Derby area, try calling BassBags (Tony Morgan). He rents basses as well. £19.50 per month as I recall. 07976 758727.
