Hey Steve, congrats & remember that double bass 'action' is always much higher than any bgt You're welcome to come up here for a couple of lessons, but it's a helluva long trek! As for technique, make sure your left hand is parallel to the board (no slanty hand!) & make sure your thumb is behind your middle finger, leaving some clearance between the palm of your hand & the neck. Have a look at York Studies book 1 (nice and easy) & then onto the OUP series "Double Bass Solo 1." And have fun! Rich.
Define 'what we're talking about' please. I can wager that every single one of us knows what we're talking about infinite times better than you do, because we're talking about our own opinions! If its your opinion that we're talking utter bollocks, then I disagree.. I say that you're wrong. Can you prove me wrong on that statement. Read this page of the thread in regards to the first half of your post. And I'd rather an interesting debate than an other arse-slapping thread of 'I agree's and '+1's that outstays its welcome because everyone keeps bumping it with the two previous replies. In fact I think the best thing about this forum is that everyone for the most part can disagree while still staying civil, thats a rare thing on an internet forum.
Hi Oscar, I wasn't talking about this page in particular It just seemed to me that a lot of people on the past pages of this thread were just 'spouting' at eachother as opposed to listening to eachother and being constructive. As you correctly pointed out, page 7 makes generally constructive & interesting reading. I will say that from a professional musician's point of view, the I find the whole X-Factor culture quite depressing. In a way it feeds into a lot of playing culture as well. Obviously, as others have said, you can't begrudge people's success (no matter what their level of ability), but I do feel it all leads to an attitude that given the right chance, celebrity will come knocking. A feeling of instant gratification (almost like the video game culture), if you like. It detracts from the hard work that previously mentioned virtuoso performers have to put in.

What are you listening to right now?
mmm, well right now i'm listening to sex machine, cause thats what i'm playing on the bass (which is on my lap as i type this). but this week so far i am mostly listening to mr scruff, sharon jones and the dap-kings, chris ballew (presidents of the usa) solo stuff, and mark morriss (of the bluetones) new album. mainly cause those are the cd's in my car! x
One of my cello pupils gave me the Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings album last week. I really like it! -
Well, to put it another way, I'd like to know how many of you who have been arguing out this thread actually know what you are talking about? How many of you actually earn your living as professional musicians or music teachers (or both!)? I only ask as some of you really have been talking utter bollocks AT eachother Getting along is sooo much nicer than all this conflict. *Wanders off muttering, "Feels like the bloody Middle East in here..."*

On a lighter note... Is this the five minute argument or the full half hour? Isn't it time this topic was put to bed? Just accept that some of us find these virtuoso players' performances inspiring & some don't. Whatever your taste, just accept that we're all different and all our opinions (no matter how diverse) should be accepted as valid. Peace. Rich.
That was you who did that Rich, not me! It made me stop and think before my next post, which is a good thing... On the basis of what's being said in this topic, I'm going to check out some of these albums so I can learn a bit more. Cheers Nik
While you're at it Nik, have a listen to Wooten's Yin-Yang. The first half is instrumental-based & possibly the best Vic has produced so far. Rich. -
Hi OTPJ, Well said and let's hope this doesn't descend into the mire of another "Musicians Wars" thread, because as you say, this is a quite unique event and a great learning opportunity. My comment was made in response to the OP's question and not consciously intended to start another huge round of negativity.. But thinking about it, I can see now how easily such comments can be taken the wrong way. So in the interests promoting harmony around here and avoiding more negativity happening, let me say that though it's not my personal cup of tea, [S][M][V] could well be the bass event of the decade! Nik
Thanks for injecting some common sense into the thread, Nik! Yes, admittedly it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but something this spectacular doesn't come around very often. Let's wait for the CD to come out and perhaps many of us will love it! I have high hopes for this one, and let it be said, I don't like all the solo albums by these guys. Like everyone else, I'm selective, but on the strength of Victor's latest effort, "Palmystery" & what I saw of the three of them playing together at the lifetime award ceremony for Stanley Clarke, it's gonna be great! Rich. -

Here was me thinking this was going to be a nice thread celebrating the coming together of three of the greatest bass players of our time in the name of entertainment, but once again, it's all sinking into the mire of the "Musicians Wars" thread. Why not let's all criticise what we can't do ourselves? Sad, quite sad. -

Yes, I mentioned it in a post eariler this week/sometime last week. It's going to be something spectacular. Pity there are no UK tour dates, though. S-M-V is another learning opportunity for us all -
*Nods* In that case, a Badass III will be just the ticket for your bass

I think a lot of you are completely missing the point here... The same as the old saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", no piece of music or soloing can be described as "un-musical." The content of music can be whatever we want it to be, whatever out imaginations can come up with, whereas it's how we interpret & play it that causes it to be musical or otherwise. As for limitations... Yes, sometimes we have to sit back a bit & admit that we can't play something. But I tend to think more on the lines of, "I can't play this yet." Actually not being able to play something is a spur for us to learn a new technique, find out a way of doing it. This is the whole point of being a musician. Not playing the same old boring sh*t for decades, but pushing the boundaries and finding something new and interesting to play. This is why people like Victor Wooten & Jeff Berlin are so important. They inspire us to be better bass players. Period. Did anyone noitice Victa's little response on his site? Very subtle & very Wooten. *Climbs off soapbox*
