1. Would the new 'natural' Essex 'bird originate from Colchester?
2. Hey Nick, you want to put this on Statii.com (if you haven't already!) Sounds like a really nice bass... If you send the pics to [email protected] I'll happily put them up for you on here Rich.
3. The Badass II for topside stringing makes a huge difference in attack & sustain, but you'll only need a Badass if you're top-loading the strings. If your bass has through-body stringing, such as an American Fender, a Badass will make little difference to the sound, as the through body strung bass has a totally different sound anyway.
4. I've been using Rotosound Swingbass rounds for forever on most basses, but in the last couple of years have converted to Status Hotwires for my Status basses & have just ordered some DR fatbeams for my Marcus Miller Jazz. Looking at the pricing, I may try some of the Sadowsky strings next for my Precision & Jazz basses.
5. I really like that spalted maple/walnut one (?) of Mark Latimour's, especially with the Norstrand pickups Are the Norstrands very different to the stock Sadowskys, Mark?
6. Some interesting thinking there, John. I have a dabble occasionally into buying and selling the odd bass, but I'm being quite cautious at the moment, what with the market being rather flat! Mainly I buy them to play. I look at each one as a tool of my trade. If I can't justify it being around, it has to go. For example, I bought a black Hofner Contemporary series bass last summer which I've now traded in against my Marcus Miller. The Hofner was bought for a supposed 60's set which worked about twice. I'm more likely to use my Precision for such jobs, so that's infinitely more useful as an all rounder. The next one in question is my KingBass which sits prettily in it's case at the moment. My "signature" bass since 1990 has been the Status SII (I'll have three of those operational soon) so the KingBass, nice though it is, is looking pretty surplus to requirements. KingBass Artist, anyone?
7. I use the Rotosound 6-string set (30-125) on my TRB-6. They seem to give the right feel for the bass. I know you can get a C string down to a .20 guage, but the 30 seems fine to me.
8. That's a real looker & a bit of history to boot! Is the case original? On the downside it's not as shiny as my 2008 model
9. Yes, the original Precision (tele-shape headstock) had both covers. Only personal experience I have is with my Marcus Miller Jazz. That has just the front pickup cover. (The bottom one wouldn't fit over the huge badass II bridge, anyway!) Apparently, it's a big part of the Marcus Miller slap technique and works really well as a "wrist rest."
10. Some of us are a little eccentric, but I suppose that goes for musicians in general. We're all wired a little differently from the norm! As for TalkBass and it's little clubs, they're Americans. 'Nuff said!
11. Oooh, pre-emptive congratulations there, Nick! Come on someone, buy this. It's utterly pristine! Otherwise I'm going to have to go out and earn some more money and buy it myself! I've already got two deals going down, so help Fox out here, guys!
12. 2 Timers by Victor Wooten from the Palmystery album. Awsome!
13. Apparently, if you order the natural ash NYC model, you get a free nubile young lady!
14. Apparently, she stole the show according to the critics. I think she's a lovely tasteful player & her sound is one of the reasons I'm thinking of a Sadowsky Check out her album as well. "Transformations".
15. Hmmm... Obviously Jeff Berlin hasn't read the requirements for the Victor/Steve camps. They say you need to send a recording of your playing & be proficient in reading music. I think he's just taking his overall anxieties out on these two & basing it all on the experience of one individual who didn't get much out of it personally. Of course, we don't get to see all sides of this & I think there's probably more to it & more sour grapes. I'd love to go on one of the beach camps at some point. Maybe next year if I stop buying basses for long enough to save some money!!! Rich.
16. I think the Sadowskys look best in the natural with the black guard & maple fingerboard. Like this one... Sadowsky UV-70
17.
You're all compl-e-t-e-ly wrong. I get my sound out of my cabs. I checked, I put my ears next to them and it's definitely the cabs. I then tried putting my fingers in my ears and got no sound at all, not one chuffing note, so I definitely don't get my sound from my fingers. I now have earwax on my strings and they sound dead. Would using Elixirs help?
LOL! Just one question, though... How did you manage to play if you had your fingers in your ears? Talented toes or an extra talented penis, perhaps?
18. Bloody hell, Charic! Buy that quickly before someone else does!
19.
Mostly hankering for for the ability to decide whether I'm building an Omni15 or two Omni10.5s And a cordless circular saw
Oooh, Clauster - Watch those fingers!
20. I was on Zanzibar (the island) a few years ago & the local band's bass player acheived that sound... With an old and battered jazz copy with what must have been 20 year old strings & a home made cab (banana box or something!)
21. When I picked up my last Status bass from the factory, Dawn gave me a Status-Graphite hoodie in black. I think this now qualifies me to bother old ladies in shopping centres!
22.
OTPJ - I think you may need to define what counts as a cheapie. So far we've had nominations for Warwick, Rickenbacker, Gretsch, and a Bongo! I wish I had enough cash to regard that lot as cheapies!
Hehe... I guess one's definition of cheap depends on how many zeros appear at the end of one's bank balance! My idea of cheap is the £169 Thunderbird By all means someone drop me some cash so I can snag a nice'n'cheap Fodera, Sadowsky or Alembic
