As a novice, best thing to do is to take it to a shop. They'll do it for you for a very small fee, sometimes completely free.

That's a really nice looking bass Just one thing, is it the picture angle or is the action of your E string really high?
-
Lovely looking bass, Josh! Nice Black Beauty as well

Headless every time. I've been playing them for nearly 20 years & whenever I play one if my headed basses, I keep bumping the headstock into things! Playing-wise, the 34" scale is not different to any other twin octave bass. The 32" KingBass takes a little getting used to, but not seriously problematic. The gains are you can play for much longer periods with no pressure on the left wrist, as the bass has much better balance. Oh, and they just look sooo cool!!!

Yes, I know what you mean, Simon! You know it's not going to be the best thing you've ever played but there is something undeniably cool about those Italia basses. -
Wow! Anything to do with Mr.Clarke is going to be something special. I'm also waiting for SMV. If you haven't heard, have a look at www.smvmusic.com

A pupil of mine recently got an Epiphone Thunderbird. Now I know they're oversized and a bit outlandish, but I have a real hankering to get one. Same goes for the new Ibanez SR300. Both cheap basses, but I want one! What cheapies are you hankering after this week?

I used to boil strings when I was a student, but first heard of the oven method recently from TerryK who I bought my latest Status S2 from. I played his modded Geddy Lee Jazz which had baked strings on. They really did seem like new. I'm going to try it as an experiment this week
And to top it all i forgot to mention im a lefty learning right. I thought this might be more advantageous in the future when it comes to be able to pick up anyones bass in the future and jam rather than carrying mine around with me everywhere, and as ive never played guitar or bass before my body shouldnt know any different right? Although i did air-guitar left handed.
Left handed instruments are a myth, anyway. Ever seen a left handed piano or a left handed cello? When both hands are doing seperate and different tasks, everyone can play the same way. I hate how manufacturers charge more money for the left handed models as well. If you're going to make lefties at all, there should be pricing parity Welcome to the forum & to bass playing, "Jesus"

Resurrection of an old thread here, but as I've been playing them for nearly 20 years, a Status Series II. -
Lovely Custom Shop Jazz V you have there, Nick. Can't remember if I spotted this thread before, but congrats (belatedly!)

Interesting thread, this one... Stlye-wise & tone production-wise (the human end of the chain) I sound like me. Only my style produces what I do. Think of it as a mix of classically trained lower string player meets jazz bass player meets funk/rock/blues player. You get the drift... Gear-wise, I'm going to use the MarkBass mantle. They say that their gear lets the true sound of your bass shine through with a minimum of processing or modelling. When I'm playing my Status basses, I sound like a Status player. Very unique sound, but still a little different on each bass. When I'm playing my Fenders, I guess they sound like Fenders on very clean strings. Always very clean strings. A friend of mine once said that I had a very trebly, zingy sound. -
My Fender Marcus Miller has a very low action. It's currently set up on 40-100 strings & is very playable. The pickup guard acts almost like a wrist rest for slapping. Excellent bass. Otherwise, Status basses spring to mind. The rigidity of the grapite necks makes keeping the board very straight and stable very easy, so Rob Green always sets them up at the optimum height - Ie., very low
-
That looks like a good deal, GN. The last of the S1 models were great basses. Wish I still had mine.

I can't find any better than your £749 for a new American Standard. That was Reidy's home of music, wasn't it?
-
Ibanez Soundgear range - 500 smackers should get you pretty much what you want, and the SR705 is probably THE best bass I have ever tried in that bracket in terms of return on investment.
Yes, I was thinking the new Ibanez SR500 which comes in under budget at £446. Bartolini pickups & 3-band active eq give you that very modern sound & the SR necks are a dream to play on. The higher spec SR700 comes in at £508. There's also the Warwick corvette standard available from around £469 or for a little less you can have the new Yamaha BB714BS (Billy Sheehan signature.) You can't go wrong with a Yamaha bass. Period. As the others have said, there're plenty of used basses on the boards here at BassChat & some bargains to be had as well.
Oooooh! Lovely Series II there! Being a huge expert (as already noted and very modest too!) your bass has the slimline neck moulding of course with the `narrow' central body graphite spine, which of course does not appear on the rear of the bass! I nearly bought one that year with a birdseye maple front - ah!
Indeed it is. My original one (an '88 - which incidentally has just showed up on Statti for sale!) had the wider spine which was a seperate block to which the wooden wings were joined. At first I thought the narrower ones weren't as nice looking, but now I have three of them I think I prefer it. DOTB - I'm going to have to come and play at your bass-candy store at some point. Problem is, I'll never want to go home!!!

Oh dear, guilty on all counts - But... I think a lot of the problem is the way people approach these numbers. Ours are very different. For instance, we of The PHD play summertime in ballad form, which changes into funk, which changes into 5/4 swing. Makes it interesting. The OutToPlayJazz (the band not the man) version of "Song for my Father" starts in a funky 4 and switches into swing for the second section. Our "The Lady is a Tramp" switches to bossanova for the middle 8 & back to swing again for the last eight bars. No banality here as far as I'm concerned. Make sure you have technically excellent musicians & you're half way there. If you do have to play the standards, make them interesting. See how many versions of "Here we go round the mulberry bush" & "Doctor Who" you can slot into standards before any audience members notice. It's fun PS. No pinching my arrangements, okay?

I had a groove for a while, yes. It was a sunburst one, but I traded it in for a Corvette $$, which was in turn sold to a pupil to help fund this... Merton is the one to talk to about Grooves. He has two - One fretted and one fretless. And apologies to RAM for all us Status nuts hijacking his thread! Perhaps we ought to have a 'pinned' Status corner, Mods?
