1. Lovely looking Ray, Saibuster. The tort guard especially suits it
2. MB1. "Off with there Heads!...."Off with there Heads!". That's "Off with their heads!", Martin. Now, go and stand in the corner and wear the pointy hat!
3. Sounds familiar... One of the music stores near me charges £5 to fit a violin string. Usually the string is around £1 !!!!!! I tell pupils & parents to tell them that, "Dick Turpin" wore a mask. I'll put the string on for nothing
4. How do I put it...? The scales aren't what you & I would expect coming from a classical background. For instance, the dominant 7ths don't start on the dominant and don't resolve. They're just a minor 7th arpeggio starting on the key note. Later on you get all the altered scales from jazz which they expect at a blistering metronome rate. Very hard to learn from a classical perspective.
5.
+1 Tal is awesome!! nice choice of bass too!!
Funny that, Chris... I wouldn't have thought you'd be into Sadowskys!
6. Don't forget that even the pristine older models like my 1990 S2 fetch around £1000 over here, but yes that was an excellent price for an Empathy. Especially as they're usually more expensive in the US due to the rarity & cost of shipping.
7. The Grade 5 theory rule only applies to the Associated Board exams. If you're doing another board, say, Trinity or Rockschool, you don't have to do the theory. The pieces in the Rockschool syllabus are very approachable, right up to grade 8. It's only the mad variations on the scales that are difficult to learn.
8.
*modesty is my middle name
LOL - Mine, too!
9.
Hi there from a newby. I'd love to know if that is an Empathy or not as then I'd know for sure what mine is.... Sadly lacking any info on the head stock other than Status, Graphite, Made in England..... Lovely instrument had it for over 10 years from 2nd hand. Never needed setting up, just plays like a dream.
Firstly, that definitely is an Empathy... It's got the early 3-band eq & the exotic woods. No doubt about it. Ian, your bass looks like either a Series I or an Energy with jj pickups. If I were a gambling man, I'd go for the Energy option.
10. Hey DJ, long time no hear! Love that Vigier. Awsome looking bass
11. I really liked my S1 Jazz. It was like having two basses in one. (The Parallel setting resembles a Precision's bottom end thump.) If it hadn't been for my 1990 Status SII waiting for me, I'd have kept it for sure. Rich.
12. Hey Al, welcome home & hope you had a great time! (Sounds like it, anyway!) How did you cope with not being able to GAS for basses for such a prolonged period?? Rich.
13. Hi Ziggy, Sounds like you already have a good collection there. You mentioned a Status & personally I can't recommend them highly enough. Possibly the most clear and yet growly sound you can get. I'd sell your Fender & Warwick 6 & find a really nice Status SII or S2-Classic. Possibly one of the best all round basses you'll ever play! Just be prepared for the fact that the Warwick market is very depressed at the moment & you're not likely to get a huge amount for a 6-stringer. I bought a mint Yamaha TRB-6 about a year ago for a song! Best of luck in your search & keep playing Rich.
14. Does your Sadowsky NYC have a glossed fingerboard, PlanetHead?
15. I ordered it from a friend's shop. If you want one at a significant discount, pm me & I'll let you know the price Now I've got the neck right it's really nice as well.
16.
MB1. 1214 Views .......and still no sign of land!
Oh, there's a sign of land alright... Depends if anyone beats my deadline
17. Nice score, Kev. The neck looks especially nice with the glossed back on it. One of my pupils' father has one of the Kay LP copy guitars with the built in effects on board. Very cool in a crazy kinda way
18. I quite liked my Hofner violin bass but it was hard work live. Does my 32" with bendwell KingBass count as "short"?
19. Just done a search on the lyrics & can't seem to find anything. From the sounds of funk and outer space, sounds like something like George Clinton & Parliment or that sort of era
20. Didn't the "bass" player in Fairground Attraction play one of these?
21. Slap, whether MK-esque or in the style of Victor Wooten is a wholly valid technique and extension to the instrument. But as with all techniques, it needs to be used appropriately. On another note, I love how a thread like this brings out all the "slap haters"! Makes me laugh
22.
NO IT WON'T!!!
I thought the Sharks had the graphite rods in the neck??
23. The honey violin is a nice colour in the flesh, as it were. Same stain colour as on my Triumph upright in my avatar. (See left!)
24. Possibly the best all-round bass I've ever played, the $$. Thinking of getting another one at some point. Congrats on an excellent bass at an excellent price.
