Tal Wilkenfeld's pretty happenin'! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gO7FI_ogvA
Yes, I think Tal has a lot going for her playing... Appearing with Jeff Beck is no mean feat at the age oif 21! I bought her album on iTunes the other week & it's excellent, too. Tal gets my vote

Learn their arrangements by ear & just add your own style/fills to it. After all, you're not going to be a clone of their old bass player, but a new bass player adding his own angle to the sound of the band.

+1 on Muppet's comments. I played a Jaguar through a very good MarkBass rig & couldn't get a sound I liked at all. Same as all the active Fender range, the preamps always sound harsh & cheap. Fenders always seem better when passive. Go Highway One - Worth it for the posiflex graphite rods in the neck & the badass bridge alone, although as Muppet said, you could always find a mint MIA Jazz like one of the last S1 models for that kind of money.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the USA Deluxe Jazz have a slighly different body shape to the Standards? I know the neck is a little longer at 22 frets... Loving your Modulus Flea, Peter! That's definitely the colour to have. Is it the same as the new one Beedster bought the other week?

Isn't it Roland who make the pickup processor for the Fender Strat VG? I didn't know they did an outboard bass version! Do you think Fender will do a Jazz or Precision VG? Rich.

I was wondering if it was any good for "crap & plop" solos??

I'd go for either one of the Warwicks (it's a buyers market at the moment!) or the Lakland 55 series. Both are nice instruments. A used Spector Euro would be another good buy in that price range - Loads of choice around, especially in the for sale section of BassChat.
How about this: Overwater Original 2 - Extra Long 36" scale.
I think I've commented on this picture in the past, but I played one of these in a shop many years ago when I was a student & it was literally the nicest bass I've ever played! I still want one, but haven't found one yet. If you're ever selling this BRX, give me a shout! Rich.

I'm with Machines on the Bongo 5... Hand it over if you want to live, LOL! Lovely collection - What's the single cut like to play? Always wondered about one of those.

I was only thinking about that lovely Sadowsky sound this afternoon while in the car listening to Tal Wilkenfeld's album, "Transformations". On jazz basses, the only really creamy sounding pre seems to be the Sadowsky. Also, I played TerryK's Geddy Lee with Audere pickups & preamp the other week & that setup turned the jazz into a real monster, giving it a very modern (dare I say it) Status-esque sound. For me, it's active all the way. Means I can get a sweeter sound at higher volumes while using less gain (creating less harshness.)

I've had several Squier standards as backups in the past, a Squier VMJ maple, an MIM 5-string, a Japanese Geddy Lee signature & a 2007 MIA S1 model. The MIA was surely the best playing & fullest sounding of the lot, but none of the Jazzes I've played have the punch I look for. I've never had a Precision, so I'm going to try one of the new American Standards this year. Try something new today

Ha! Just read through all the little Parliment quotations on this thread! I was listening to some the other evening - Fabulous! Funk never ceases to make me smile... It's the original happiness music! Also technically interesting for bass players...

Is that TRB-6 "P" for Patituchi or piezo? I'm guessing the former, as the piezo bridge models are much more recent, aren't they? Anyway, I have the bolt on TRB-6 II & these really are stunning basses. Really hope this one finds a good home. Unless someone offers me an Overwater 6 at stupid money, I'd never sell mine!

The Squier VM is actually really nice. Much better than the 'aged' Vintage one. The 'Duncan Designed' pickups on the Squier are also excellent.

Squire VMJ, OLP Musicman or Musicman SUB???
OutToPlayJazz replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
I've had a Squier VMJ & they're a great bass, but the pickups are a little weak. (Don't forget that I tend to compare every bass output-wise to a biblical Status preamp!) Same with many passive Fenders/Squiers, you'll have seen a lot of owners on this server swapping out pickups & adding preamps, etc. On the plus side of this point, I played Terry K's Fender Geddy Lee which has an Audere Pre & pickups the other week. What a great sounding bass! I played an OLP MM22 (the active twin humbucker one) several times at a friend's shop & that was biblical. Best sounding bass in the shop! (And one of the cheapest.) I had a pupil who had one of the MM Subs. It was a great bass to play, great sounding preamp & a very fast neck. I know which was I'd go, but as usual in these things, I'd find a good example of each & try them for yourself if you can. -

My life story. In basses. With pictures.
OutToPlayJazz replied to wateroftyne's topic in Gear Gallery
I have a feeling that you & Beedster are planning to buy the whole early output of Fender Precisions between you! Seriously though, your P's are seriously nice. I think it's after seeing them so often on here that I want a new American Standard in the same colour scheme! Excellent collection, mate. What's next on the list? Rich. -
MB1. No, im Sorry Rich! but that Kingbass just doesnt look right at ALL!.....I will of course take it off your hands for a small fee!
Hmmm, not sure about that Martin! You already have one, anyway - Oh, did you see the stunning transparent red KingBass on Statii.com?
RanoFunky. Do you have a personal favourite?
Hmmm... Tricky - I think it has to be the KingBass. It's the second one I've had & it sounds so different to the other two. Even faster to play (and that's saying something!!!)
