1.
Squier do a couple- the pete wentz P and the vintage modified jazz.
Beat me to it there! Yes, the natural satin maple neck on the Squier Pete Wenz Precision / Vintage Modified Jazz (same neck) is excellent. Next up in the price range is the Fender 50's Precision at around £500, then the mexican made active Fender deluxe P-bass special, followed by the Japanese Fender Geddy Lee signature jazz. That one's glossed as well, which gives the GL a highly three-dimensional sound. Oh, forgot the telebass shape Precisions as well... The 51 Precision, Sting Signature & the cheaper Vintage Modified TeleBass Squier all have maple necks, too.
2. 1. Basses... Yes, many people on here are into their Fenders - I have one myself & really like it. And many of us are highly supportive of British luthiers such as Jon Shuker & Rob Green at Status-Graphite. 2. Rock music is something that a great many of us here play in order to earn money. In my case, I like to learn & listen to jazz, funk & new grass, as I hear and play too much rock music as it is! 3. Perhaps many of us aspiring bass players also avoid rock music after reaching a certain standard as it's not as challenging to play as funk & jazz?
3. I'm only a hobbyist guitarist, but I have a lovely Epiphone Les Paul '56 GoldTop with creamy sounding P90's. Relation to my basses? Perhaps just a polar opposite to my modern sounding basses?
4. That's normal for the Warwicks with the active preamp onboard. The pickups are passive, so the bass & treble controls are used only by the preamp when it's turned on (volume control in the pushed in position.) It was the same with my original Status SII. Pretty normal situation for switchable active basses.
5. Lfalex's Yamaha Attitude is very cool. Those Deans, however, are utterly putrid. Teenage girls will be flocking to buy them, though!
6. Lovely laid back version of blue bossa One of my favourites!
7. I think I've heard the name somewhere before, but I really like this! Bottom of the body profile is sorta like a Status S2 shape. Lovely looking instrument
8. Have a listen to Bela Fleck & the Flecktones playing "Flight of the cosmic hippo" (Victor Wooten on 5-string fretless) & you'll hear what it's all about. It's not a fast or flashy line, but sooo effective.
9. Thomann do the Deluxe P-Bass special (with the gold pickguard/p&j pickups) for £522. It's got an active preamp on-board as well.
10. Love your SEI single cut. Most fantastic looking piece of wood I've seen recently!
11. I've been spoiled as well. I only had a cheap Columbus & then a Hohner Jack active before I got my first Status in 1990. While I had that original Status bass I must've gone through about 10-15 other instruments, all of which got sold on. More recently I've bought a few more new Status basses, built to order & have built up a nice arsenal of other instruments alongside them. Problem is, you try another bass further down the price range & it never quite lives up to your "premium" basses. For example, I bought a new MIM Fender Jazz V a couple of years ago & traded up to a CIJ Geddy Lee signature jazz. That has now been traded again for a new MIA S1 jazz. That's better... It's a bloody addiction! But then again, it beats gambling
12.
So you couldn't resist getting that other Status.... Niiiiiice. Of all the basses I've sold. I miss my status the most..... (Great, now I'm miserable!!!!)
Yes, got the pair now & have just agreed to buy a beautiful 1990 Series II with a John East pre in it as well. Addicted to Statiis? Well, I have been playing them since 1990! Rich.
13. I don't usually go for P-basses, but that one is stunning!
14. I always thought playing a shorter scale instrument would be odd and difficult to adapt to, but after a few notes on my 32" KingBass, it's just like "home". The only one I find a little beguiling is my Hofner violin bass, which is mainly due to the lack of dot markers on the side of the neck. Strange, really. I have 32, 34 & 35" necks & I don't really think about it usually... I just play them
15. I must say, they are growing on me. Modded a MIM for a friend & did a setup on it the other week. Played a set on it at a 60's gig as well. Really liked it. Still resisting so far, though....
16. The MIM jazz neck is lovely to play. Make sure you play a few to get a really good one that fits you. They vary quite a lot. The last few MIMs I've played have been excellent, though.
17. Needless to say, I haven't laughed so much in ages... Can't believe I didn't spot this thread sooner! As for mine, she's a gorgeous '69 model (no puns!), big top end, lovely rounded bottom end with a penchant for a good slapping. Nuff said!
18. I don't know if they do them, but probably SWR... And a new spine to go with them!
19. That's awsome looking! You're right, you don't see many around, same as Warwick Dolphins & Infinities.
20. I know what you mean... Custom builders are highly varied in their pricing. I priced an Alembic Series II for a client last year & it came to something like £8000! I'd seriously like a Fodera Victor Wooten Yin-Yang signature, but they're about $9200 US!!! Luckily my Status basses all come in at under £2k. That's rich enough for my pockets! Now, about that Overwater 6-string... Hmmmmm...
21.
Don't do it Rich, you're just bored (like me) and fancy a change for changes sake. Alternatively, you could buy it and sell the $$ to help fund it (the pain )
No mate, it's not boredom I had no desire for anything else (apart from maybe a GB Rumour or a Fodera - Read as both!!!) until I saw this... The original Series II makes me nostalgic, although in truth there's not going to be much between them, as they both have the same construction. If anything, my new Walnut one is more versatile with the KingBass 3-band mid-switchable electronics package. Think of it as wanting your youth back, LOL I'm going to give both new Statiis a good hard gigging this week & see how I feel then. I'm in love with the new KingBass, so no danger there! Rich.
22. That's a stunner, mate! Ped's gonna be really jealous... Ooooh! Rich.
23. Just great... I thought I was just about satisfied on the Status front and many of you will have seen my new S2-Classic & KingBass on the bassporn forum - But then TerryK put his gorgeous 1990 Series II up for sale - It's so much like my 1988 original one, I waaaaant it! So here it is, guys... Should I sell this brand new S2... ...so I can buy Terry's lovely SII... ...which is so like my original one here... I miss it! By all means, tell me to stop blubbing over old basses, LOL
