The necks do vary a lot... Thickest seems to be the Streamer (thumb to fingers), with the more manageable thinner necks being the standard Corvette & the $$ & the Thumb 4 seems to have a very nice neck, too. Then again, according to some of the others, some of these are very variable as well! As for the sound of the $$, as I've been quoted saying on here before, it's like God Shouting! Mine has a really funky, raspy top end with bellowing bottom frequencies, but then again I do have the treble & bass on the preamp turned up full & the pickup switches pushed downwards (parallel?) most of the time!

I know what you mean, John! I was playing a streamliner when I was there in December, but I was most taken by a T-Bass that had just come back from demo on a magazine review. It was fantastic. Maybe later in the year *pulls empty pockets inside out!*

Lovely lump of CG you have there, John... Let me know when you're ready to move this one on I've got a thing for six-stringers at the moment! I'll be down at Colchester at the end of next month to pick up my new KingBass Artist Was the MK flightcase still in the corner of Rob's workshop?

Never mind about the bass... That was seriously nice & tasteful playing

Level 42 - Lessons in love... Very simple idea of arpeggiated chords but seriously effective! Jamoraquai - Travelling without moving... A standard for my pupils to learn! Victor Wooten - Zenergy (look it up on YouTube!)

We did a few very high class functions at the Dorchester on Park Lane in London & met Sarah Michelle Gellar, Frank Bruno, had a chat with Roger Moore & shared a drink in the bar with Rod Stewart (who was quitre predictably surrounded by a bevvy of rather tall looking blondes!)

What ever happen to all of the (bass) heroes ?
OutToPlayJazz replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
Being old (and all that!) I don't really follow new music, but I did get into the Arctic Monkeys so that pupils could play the stuff... However, a lot of my pupils want to play the old school rock music Personally, I'm currently getting all the Victor Wooten CDs I can from the US (Soul Music & Live in America arrived this morning in the post) and listening & studying hard. A modern day bass hero as far as I'm concernerd, anyway. -
Gibson emasculate world's most manly bass...

Yes, truly horrid - They look best in the dark red/cherry colour. -
The real issue for me was how far the neck extended left away from my body(I'm right handed). I'm actually remembering the detail from over a year ago, maybe two so I could actually be wrong about the neck dive (I'm getting on and my memories not what it used to be ). The difficulty I had was that in fretting that far away from my body, my elbow was almost straight and that effected my wrist. I'm 5' 10" so no shorty either.
Yes, I had that problem with the shorter body causing the angle away from the body (especially when you're not supermodel thin, like me!)

The KingBass is an acquired taste, that's for sure! I actually liked the offset feeling & the shorter 32" scale was very easy to get along with. I only sold mine to Ian, as I made the mistake of ordering it as a 5-stringer. Yes, it was possibly the fastest 5-stringer on the planet, but it was useless for fast slap, as the graphite neck picked up every resonance & caused the B-string to boom when it wasn't even being played. (Or perhaps that was because I always had the treble & bass frequencies on the bass' eq turned right up? The instrument has a very distinctive sound as well - Obviously it has the traditional Status Growl, but it's a little more hifi & sweeter than the others. My new S2 sounds very different with a much deeper growl to it, even though it has the same electronics, but a normal 34-inch scale with no bendwell. I never felt the neck dive mentioned above, and am really looking forward to my new one next month. (An exact copy of my old Walnut one, but with 4 strings this time!)

Basically, if you need the extended range, it's going to be worth the extra outlay. I've never found a five I really liked and completely got along with. I have however, got along instantly with my Yamaha 6-stringer. Go figure!
-
I think what Ian was saying originally was that he loves the feel of the 30-115 sets for the KingBass and it's what the instrument runs best on, but he's used to playing on much heavier guages. I'd imagine the instrument does run equally well on heavier guage strings, but I'd have the action re-set up by Rob at the Status factory to maintain the same feel. (I adjust action on all my basses, except for Status basses, which I always leave for Rob to adjust - After all, the maker sets them just right...

Never seen these before, but just looked at the website & loved the look of the bublinga one. Would also be interested to know of anyone who's played these or who owns one.

Poorly Status Series 11 sale or trade maybe SOLD
OutToPlayJazz replied to dabootsy's topic in Basses For Sale
Most of the damage is cosmetic by the looks of the pics... The thick body lacquer doers go brittle on the edges afer a couple of decades, but it's easy to get repaired. It's actually the same stuff they use to bind the neck, so Rob would do that for a reasonable amount & have it looking new again. Same for the surface chip/crack - It looks like it's only gone through the lacquer so no damage to the wood as such. I'd value it around £500-650 in current condition. With the work done you'd be looking more like £850 to just under a grand. Nice 80's SIIs are highly sought after. -
How was the tone? Did it lack from the smaller body?
No loss of tone at all... It sounded just as full as a Stealth II. Very fast neck as per usual from Rob's fare & huge punch. I still prefer the Status 2-band eq over the newer 3-band like I have at the moment.
Don't even go there! I was already suffering mild GAS over these. AND I will soon have that sort of money. Money. Hole. Pocket. Burn. (In no particular order!)
HeHe... I'll make sure I put in your order when I pick up my new KingBass next month!

My gig was the culmination of a horrid week in Pantomime. Not only the badly chosen music & crass/crap humour, but also the "asbos waiting to happen" in the audience behind me. All in all, a living hell for musicians!

I've always liked the look of the Hohner B2 ADB with the active EMG's & drop D detunable bridge. The necks on these are very rounded, though. Just a little thing, but not to everyone's tastes. On the other hand you could always add another £1000 and order a Status Streamliner. Played one at the factory last month & it was a stunning bass in all respects.
-
Yes, I tend to sell all budget or second hand instruments I buy as well. The only one to buck the trent has been the TRB-6 I bought from Beneath It All on here. That's one amazing bass I play a lot & love to bits!
-
Yes, they are excellent! Shipping is free above a certain order price and as stated by others above, there's no import duty within the EU. Just watch the prices over the period of a week or two though, as they tend to fluctuate with the £-Euro exchange rate.

Apologies to those who have seen my ugly mug shots on the server before, but our dress code is usually all black for the rock band & the jazz is usually... Yep, pretty well black for the musicians. Theme noir indeed!

I was very pleasantly surprised in this respect during my visit in early December to Sound Control, Leeds City. I bought an Ashdown MAG head for use as a mini rig with my 'top' MarkBass cab & with no prompting it was reduced from £240 to £210. It was a case of, "Let's see what we can do for you today..." Obviously, the guy knew I was a pro, but that in itself shouldn't make any difference. I'd certainly hope they treat all players/customers with the same excellent service. I'll definitely be going back there in the near future!

Comparing the specs, new to old looks like they're cost cutting. Thinner varnish to let more sound through?? More like because it costs less! No S1 switch? Well they definitely saved a few dollars there! Lighter hipshot tuners... Hmmm, less metal, then? Same old story - Less spec & quality with a higher price tag. Stick to the Japanese, I say! Although I do still gas for a Candy Cola/maple Precision with S1 switching. May get one before they're all gone!

In a word, yes. Get your own choice of strings on the Warwick & enjoy!
