I have a vague recollection of Ashdown producing basses recently & remember reading about it on the long lost bassworld server. Anyone remember what the hell they were called? I seem to remember that they were a little bit like a Trace/Status T-bass or something like that. Is my grey matter taking over? Erm, nope... That'll be obvious when I start spelling 'gray' like an American!

The other reason could be the graphite wrapped rods in the neck. Graphite does give a very "growly" resonance, too. Never tried one with the grease bucket. Also, my Geddy Lee has a sort of "3D" resonance to it as well... I think it's the vintage US pickups on it & the hard maple board as well, coupled with the extra resonance of the badass II.

I've always gigged (for about 20+ years) & it's an integral part of my living, be it out with the rock trio, the jazz band or playing in an orchestra/opera, etc. To me a musician is anyone who wants to make music. Period. Doesn't matter if you're a pro like me or a so-called "bedroom hobbyist." The more people making music in the world, the better as far as I'm concerned. I actually like listening to the "have-a-go" brigade at jam sessions, etc., as I can always find new ideas. I sometimes find that my classical training does limit me in some certain respects & the originality of self-taught people can be very refreshing In short, we can always learn something new from people, whether they're good players or otherwise.

Try getting the sheet music from Banks of York. They have literally everything usually!

I played a California a few weeks ago & it was a lovely bass - Fantastic finish & a very powerful preamp. Go for it

BTW, the baritone VI seems to have been quietly dropped when the Fender websites updated a couple of months ago (with the addition of new colours like "Candy Cola" on the basses & the new VG series strat, etc...), same as the Zone series of basses.

Do you mean the Fender bass VI? Thomann.de are quoting £1421.20 but it's on an "on request" ordering basis... DV247.com £1729.99 Hope this isthe one you were thinking of... The 'Jaguar' is a standard tuning bass with a similar body & lots of active trickery

Hmmm... Just saw that the price was originally set at £120, so I have to vote for the Boston P-basses I've just bought as rentals. Quality is way in front of a Squier Affinity & they sound lovely, especially as I paid only £80 for each package (including 15w amp, case, lead & strap!)

I was looking through the first few pages of this subject & was getting worried that I was the only ageing bald oe here... As I read on, however, I was much more reassured!

If it's new, shop around for the natural maple Squier Vintage Modified Jazz... But otherwise, anything used that fits Look for a Hohner Jack Custom with the active circuit for one suggestion, or the B2A stick bass.

I've tried all the tricks over the years... I use fast fret to keep strings zingy & clean sounding... Strangely, if you wipe the strings with a cloth afterwards, the strings deaden. Just give the strings a wipe down with the applicator & they're fine. Make sure you don't get any on exposed screw heads or pickup poles, though. It's very corrosive! Many years ago tried the old boiling strings routine & wiping them with a solution of meths with a few drops of washing up liquid. Neither gets you very far, so I'd say either pay £15-20 on a set of strings each month, or buy some more fast fret at £5. Cutting corners never seems to work!

One of my pupils has the OLP MM2 (black 4-stringer). It's a nice enough bass for the money, but I had a play on the natural Tony Levin 5-stringer & it was a nicely made instrument, active, etc, but the string spacing would suit a g*****ist more than a bass player. Feels as if they tried to fit 5 strings into the space of four. Good output from the preamp, though

I have Schallers on my Geddy Jazz and find them fiddly... But the Warwick ones on my Corvette $$ with the push-in pole are a much better design (as long as you make sure they've clicked in properly!)

Anyone else played one of these? I had a long play on two of these Tokai Rockinsbetters (okay, so it's a crap name!) & they were awsome to play - Great sound & feel to them. Only fault I could find was that the fireglow one I tried had a badly fitted chrome cover over the neck pickup. Fantastic basses, though!

Nah, definitely don't fight it It's taken me over 20 years to find a Fender Jazz I really love playing & that's my Geddy Lee. It's so good, I'm thinking of getting another one!

If you have a look at www.guitaremporium.co.uk they have all the specs on there. Also on www.fenderjapan.co.jp I really like the idea of a japanese P-bass for just over £200. I guess the import duty would bring it more into line with the emporium's pricing, though

I'd go a little higher up the range & get the BB614... Lovely playing bass & 3-band active eq as well!

Paul, Harley Benton is the own brand of instrument from Thomann... Y'know, P & J-basses for as little as £60. Lots of people say they're good instruments.
