Heads up for Londoners and nearby places...
OutToPlayJazz replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks for the heads-up GW, but I've spent all my money now. -
For those bored of politics, my 20yr old bass has had a revamp
Funnily enough OTPJ I thought of your bass when I snapped the photos. It's all original and what the photo doesn't show is the fairly horrendous lacquer cracks along the underside of the bass. The neck is from a 2004 CIJ so it really is looking a lot newer now. And Clarky, a hot sweaty night - I was spitting in that picture. How terribly uncultured of me. Turned out nice in the end though!
Yes, with the new neck yours does look rather like a 'burst version of mine - Mine's now gone to a new home & has been replaced with a 50th Anniversary Jazz. It was the nicest Precision I've ever played as well. -

Looks really great, Burrito. Has the body been refinished or is it all original? (Still looks really nice and shiny.) -
Is it worth trading my bass for this bass ?
OutToPlayJazz replied to chris2401's topic in Bass Guitars
The prospective value of a vintage bass is immaterial unless you're a hardened collector. You buy basses to play them, so which do you prefer to play & listen to? That's the real question you need to be asking yourself. -
Lovely bass, Clarky. I've always liked how these play and sound, although I have no use for one personally. Now where did I put my big afro wig, leather waistcoat & mirror shades?
Little review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWLxPvVH4Ic...feature=related I didnt realise they gave you mutes!
Yes, all the bits are in the case - Basically it's an embelished version of the case candy you get with the American Vintage models.

The necks on the classic 50's models are really nice - The original "third of a baseball bat" design, wide at the nut, but very comfortable to play. The quality on these models seems very good too, with glossed necks/fingerboards, tall vintage reverse tuners & lovely finishes. The only criticism I had on playing one was that the pickup lacked output, but that can easily be changed with the addition of a Nordstrand, Wizard Thumper, or any number of quality split coil pickups. All in all, a lovely bass for not much money.
Hey Rich, with your Fender juggling you are rapidly becoming the new Beedster/Clarky Very pretty bass you have there
Hey Clarky, it would seem so at the moment, although I'm regretting moving on the Road Worn. It was THAT good!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! T
Hey Tom, you got a great Jazz there. I missed it as soon as it went out of the door!
Great choice. Have you seen the bass player mag review? BTW this is not helping my Jazz bass gas! :-)
I haven't seen the review - Can you scan it for me or something? I saw the Ed Friedland review which was very good.

So I was going out to pick up a new American Deluxe & happened to phone a place in Leeds looking for price comparisons. The guy on the other end of the phone just happened to mention they had a 50th Anniversary Jazz arrive yesterday. Is this what they call fate?! So I went along, tried the bass, haggled very hard for an hour & finally came out with this... Showroom mode... Unnecessary bits removed for playing... Now I\'ve finally got it all set up on my choice of strings & dropped the action down about three miles (why do they do that??), the sound is like an American Standard, but with a little more "cream", if you know what I mean It doesn't have the utter sharpness and gritty vintage tone of the Road Worn, but the creamy jazz burp is there in abundance. All in all a very nice bass. Better pics to come when the nice weather returns! Btw, all 500 of the 50th models have now shipped from Corona, so if you find one and really want one, snare it quickly. Had a moment to do some better pics this afternoon...
Wow, got enough winding on your string pegs there? Looks like a beauty, If I wasn't saving for an old one........well, then I'd be a bit richer......but I am, so good luck Si
Heh! That's just how the string winding should be - Creates more downforce on the end of the string and thusly more tension. But then again, what do I know? I usually play headless basses! -
Some people do get agressive if you say anything slightly against football don't they?
Football? Isn't that the strange Earth custom where twenty-two men run around in t-shirts and shorts in the middle of winter, chasing a spherical projectile around a wet & muddy field for no apparent reason? Illogical, Captain.

I turned my nice "playing at a friend's wedding" pic into a sketch yesterday... -
Did you know that basses (of the "double" variety) originally only had three strings, even well into the 19th century? Most early instruments are conversions to four strings. The top soloists of the day such as Bottesini & Dragonetti would fly up and down the G-string to play their impressive arias & theme/variations, etc.

I've always thought the Big Al to be another great piece of design from EBMM. I don't want one personally, but I can definitely see the appeal. Luckily, all basses don't have to look like they were designed in the late 50's - early 60's. More players should dare to be a little different & try playing something striking, cool and fresh today!
-
The other thing to consider is that covering your bass in thick new coats of new paint & lacquer can affect the sound to a certain extent. If you love the sound of the bass as it is, leave well alone.
-
All of these starter basses will get you going just fine, but I'd personally steer clear of the tiny amplifiers. They're fine for making [a] sound at home, but you're going to need more poke when you want to get out playing in a band or with your mates. Have a look at the for sale section on here for a cheap bass and a cheap used bass amp like an Ashdown Electric Blue 180 or something along those lines. As a teacher, the starter packs have always seemed like false economy to me. You're always better off getting something you can actually get out there and use live from the outset. For example, most of my younger students at the moment have used Fender Mexican basses, new Squier basses, or new Epiphone basses & either Ashdown Electric Blue or Roland Bass Cube amplifiers.
I'd advise against getting a Status unless you're over 46 and don't need to appear attractive to women
Obviously needing to appear attractive to women is a problem you're having - How long have you been buying the single man's tin of beans & sausages, then? In answer to the OP, many basses will do the function band setup really well. Make sure you get something that cuts through the mix well, though. I don't know about you, but I hate my sound being buried alive!
