1.
congrats, I really want a 3TS 62 (supposed it will have to be RI!) with flats, so nice to hear you where sold on one had you tried other 62RIs and not liked them as you state or was it other types of P, also was it new?
I've had numerous cheapies in the past, a Mex Standard, both 50's & 60's Classic Vibes, one of the new American Standards, but I never truly liked the sound of any of them. I first played mine at Peter's last fall & the sound hit me between the eyes with how totally different it sounded to most other Precisions. Much more growl and clarity and none of the usual nasal mush I'd normally associate with the Precision. It's about a year or so old, this one. I've temporarily put some EB Slinky strings on but as soon as the DR FatBeams arrive, the EB's will be consigned to the trash. Much too harsh for this lovely soulful bass.
2.
Yes, but what do I do with the leftovers!!??
Make another, of course!
3. That's a lovely looking bass, Dave - Unfortunately I'm all spent up at the moment after the past couple of weeks' bass buying, so best of luck with the sale
4. Glad you're loving your new bass, GW Looks a real nice one. I'm still salivating for the butterscotch one, even though I'd never gig it on the stuff I do.
5.
What age and is the Road Worn? Its simply stunning Rich. If you wouldn't mind PM'ing me a rough price i would need to pay to buy one? Thanks Leo
Hey Leo, it's good to finally get to talk to the inventor of the electric bass The Road Worn is brand new - The full rrp on these is usually around £1100, but do an internet search and you'll find them for around £799 usually.
6.
Ah! Brother! Ye hath beat me to the Fiesta Fancy! Well done mate - a fine pairage! I found a lovely used US Vintage '57 P bass today and it really wants me to buy it.....however casheth is tight and I'm lusting after another Jazz bass right now...! Nico x
Oh? Another Jazz, Brother? What pray might that be, then?
7. Exactly - I do top pro shows, I'm on the BBC's Strictly tour at the moment, but I still do little function jobs & amateur shows, etc. Paid work is paid work, no matter how prestigious or otherwise.
8. I have the same problem to a degree, Gareth - The Status basses remain pretty constant and they're my mainstay instruments, but the "others" do keep changing. After the last foray into a Jazz (which I never ended up gigging and sold), I found I missed having a Fender around. My few months with EBMM instruments was interesting, but not what I was looking for sound wise. Too much of a mix up of modern sparkly with vintage wuffle. So back to Fender we go The Road Worn Jazz has "that" Jazz sound and I've been waiting for the stonking sounding 62 AV Precision for quite a time. Perhaps I've got the mix right this time - Modern graphite basses and vintage wooden passive ones. We'll see...
9.
Does this mean your brief 'fraternisation' with Musicman is over Rich? Might be interested in this one when you come to sell it Rich ;-)
Yes Mart, the EBMM flirtation is over for the time being. I loved the modern sound of the ceramic magnets in the 5, but the alnico 4 was too much of a mixture for me. So now it's ultra modern graphite or vintage wood. Yin & Yang. I waited a long time to get this one, so I think it'll be staying around for a while. But you never know...
10. Courtesy of Peter [Greeneking] I'm now the proud owner of this lovely AV 62 Reissue Sounds like no other Precision I've heard with clear bell like growling tones and no mush whatsoever. And the Road Worn Jazz in Fiesta Red...
11. Okay, finally found one I like. Picked up a lovely American Vintage 62 RI in vintage white/tort yesterday and it's got a lovely wide open growling tone and not the usual horrid nasally sound most Precisions on rounds usually produce. Very very impressed, especially with the stunning build quality and the lovely flat but wide 44.5mm neck. Beautifully polished rosewood board as well. Pics in the porn section when I get round to it.
12. Yay! Classic Vibe take over the world. They'll be buying out Tescos soon! Glad to see yet another happy user. I haven't been able to find a bad CV anywhere yet. Are these the most consistently high quality Fender product?
13. Glad you're happy with it now That's the sort of setup I do on Jazzes - Lowest possible action and a very slight bit of relief in the neck. As for taking the lacquer off, why would you want to do that? The Geddy has a lovely neck. It won't upset the stability, though. That shouldn't be a problem at all. Perhaps get the luthier to satin lacquer it instead of the gloss you have at the moment?
14. Lovely collection, GW - Can't wait to see your new acquisition, Mr.Al!
15. Where are you based, Lawrence? If you aren't a million miles away you could bring it over and we'll experiment with it. I was also thinking that some DR Marcus Miller Fatbeams my help as well. They're still the best strings I've ever heard on a Jazz.
16. As far as I know, the Fender single coils have always been equipped with alnico magnets, but I'm sure someone will know of one range or special that's the exception to this. The biggest tone changer as far as I've experienced on the Jazz is the body wood. Some of the ash bodied models really "sing" completely differently. I know that around 2000-2007 you could order an Am.Std with the ash body as an option over the usual alder. I know the exact tone you mean as well - JohnGH has a lovely Japanese 75 reissue in natural ash with "American Vintage" pickups and that one has "that" sound. Pity I didn't keep that one, really. Luckily, the new Road Worn model I have now has a lovely sound and really shines with "that jazz sound" we all strive for.
17.
Ooooh.... Y'know, I know I shouldn't. I've got a very nice Jazz Bass already. And anyway I've always hated all that fake relic business. And I've already set my mind on buying a Ray 34 next month. But....... It would look awfully nice sitting next to my Bassman. Get behind me satan.
Ooh, I see you've got the TV 15 listed in your gear. What's it like? I don't need one, but they are uber-cool!
18. The Sting version is usually about £100 more than the '51s.
19. I've been teaching younger pupils on the 1/8th mini basses for the last twenty years. They're very expensive, but produce an authentic sound. It was all started by Rodney Slatford with his MiniBass project & "Bass is Best."
20. Did you see the rest of my post that I edited in? Pickup height can be a big part of it as well.
21. Yes, I was thinking it was quite interesting - Then... The bridge pickup and fretless = Jaco sound. Okay, so how do you do groovy jazz runs with only two strings? It was a great plan, but they really haven't thought it through!
22.
We are a conservative bunch -- if we weren't, Fret-Kings would be flying off the shelves faster than they could make them.
Speak for yourself - Oh damn, I've just bought two conservative Fenders!
23. As far as I know, there's no passive bypass on a Stingray, so in answer to your question, it won't be so much quiet as utterly silent. Usually when an active battery starts to die, you get a distorted sound and a loss of output. If your Stingray is quiet, try adjusting the pickup closer to the strings. That's what I did with mine. Being as the humbucker is normally situated in the "back" position, you can comfortably have it high enough so the pole pieces are 3-4mm off the strings.
24.
That should come with a GAS warning T
Hehe! I held off buying one for as long as I could
