1. The Bongo is something I'd really like to try. I've always liked the sound and look of them, but our paths haven't crossed as yet. I almost scored a used one on here a few weeks ago, but couldn't get to the seller in time. Someone else snapped it up very quickly. Duarte will be along shortly to tell us more about how amazing these things are. He has three Bongos as far as I recall.
2. It's horses for courses - I use 4's when I don't need any lower notes & I want the fastest necks I own for speedy funky stuff. I use a 5 when I need to play lots of extra lower notes & I used to have a TRB-6 which was great for working with sax players because they work in such stupid keys - The high C string is a boon when you're able to work across ways, as opposed to flying up and down the neck. They're all useful in their own way. I need another TRB.
3. 52-110? Wow, he had tough fingers. Man's strings!
4. The only thing you can really do to avoid the pain & blisters is to pace yourself. Strangely, I find I get more damage from orchestral playing, as the pizzicato is a different technique. When I'm using a DB for the big band stuff I tend to play very gently and have the amplifier turned up quite high
5. All of the black blocks on maple boards are stenciled/painted. The only true inlaid ones are the pearoid ones like on a 75 Reissue.
6. Audience: "Why's that guitar bigger than the other one?" Bass Player: "Because it's a bass, not a guitar, you moronic individual!"
7. I sold a MAG 15" Deep cab on here a while ago for £90. They do come up from time to time
8.
lol sorry! I'm kidding really Ideally I want to stay around the West midlands staffordshire region as with 2 kids in tow it's difficult enough to travel as it is! lol
Absolutely understandable with the kids in the equation Well best of luck with the shopping, Sarah. I'm sure you'll let us know what eventually transpires as your "rig of doom"!
9.
Where's Doncaster
I give in.
10.
Max £400 all in for a head and cab somewhere between 300-400 W.
Go and visit Dave Ryan at Electro Music in Doncaster. Tell him you're a BassChatter & he'll look after you.
11. If your Laney has a visible cable with a jack plug going into the speaker, then yes you could get someone to make you up a speaker lead with a male jack at one end and a female jack at the other end. What sort of overall budget were you thinking of?
12. Yep, it's one of those curious things to get your head around, Sarah. I know you were looking originally at the Ashdown Little Giant range and they need 4ohms cabinets to work at all well. As a for instance, I have a Genz Benz Shuttle 600w amp which when used with one 8ohms cab produces 375W. If I then add my other 8ohm cabinet the resistance drops to 4ohms and I get the full 600w +. The best option is usually going to be second hand. My mate Dave has one for sale here... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=69315 It wouldn't cost a deal to add another cab to this...
13.
I'm quite clearly going to hell. A hell where I will have to practice for minutes on end while continually polishing my maple cap.
Sounds like heaven to me!
14. Basically, the amp only produces it's full output by splitting it through the two 8ohms cabs, therefore dividing down to 4ohms. If you use one cabinet, you'll only be getting half of the available power. I'm not sure if a 4ohm cabinet would be a solution, as you'd still be only using one of the amplifier outputs. Perhaps someone else more technically minded with speakers will clarify this one for you.
15.
It's all good OTPJ. The reasoning is...it looks cool. End of. It's only a bass. It's only music. It isn't a reflection on my warped and crooked personality. It doesn't make me a bad person. I don't like to take all this too seriously. Or I might start making serious sounding music, and that would never do!
Quite true and a very well put point - I suppose the difference in a lot of ways is that I do take music very seriously, as it's my living Thanks for the very well reasoned explanation, btw.
16. Heh! Not a problem, Paul - As far as I'm concerned you can all take belt sanders to your gear as it's yours after all. I was just trying to get to the bottom of the reasoning behind it. Is it a bit like these young lads who cover their 1.0 litre Corsas with unpowered weight like spoilers and garbage can tailpipes?
17. I think you'll find it's the reflection of a lampshade, mate
18. So it's all about image for you then, Paul? Not honesty, hard work or reality?
19.
Would something like a hartke 4x10 be a better investment then?
If the Hartke cabinet is a 4ohm cabinet, yes. If it's 8ohms, nope.
20. This bass is coming up to two years old now. Rich (Grey Parrot) had it from new and I bought it at about four months old. It's finished in a satin lacquer which is just starting to go shiny where my arm hooks over the instrument and where I anchor my thumb most of the time. That's true and honest wear. I'm sure it'll look gradually cooler as it gets older, but it gets worked hard and is looked after meticulously. Scratches and dents are nothing to be proud of unless they tell a cool story
21.
Tis indeedy. Well... active preamp but not pickups I believe.
You'll find that you need the two cabs to get the full 300w, though. With one you're only pulling only around 150w, but thankfully the Ashdown cabs are quite cheap. You can usually pick either a 1x15 or 2x10 deep for around £150 a go. Best of luck with it and happy shopping
22. Hi Sarah, The MAG Evo-II head is a fine piece of equipment. I had one a couple of years ago as a backup & also ran one of the 300w combos for a while as well. They work brilliantly with two cabs. More power than you'll need, really. Your Dean Pro is active, isn't it? Rich.
23. That's a lovely looking bass and a great story attached, too. Lots of honest playing wear as well. Congrats on the score, but sad to lose a friend in such circumstances at the same time.
24.
Is there anything that's NOT made in china anymore? lol
Nope. 'Fraid not! I've been doing some quality control consultancy for a musical instrument importer and some of the Chinese stuff is getting scarily good. Witness the Squier Classic Vibe range and how good they're getting. As for the Ashdowns, I've never played a bad one, whether it's made in China or here in the UK.
