1.
Thanks for all the replies. A bit more info. for you the Jazz bass is fitted with a MMC active TB cct. the pickups are the originals. The TE pre-amp is the GP12 feeding into an Ashdown Mark King head (via the return skt).So I'm just using the power amp inside not its pre-amp. MarkBass 2 10 and a Hartke 4 10 Traveller Cab. Even with new strings (Elites) the bass on the E always sounds a bit dull I was wondering if a Baddass bridge might make a difference. The neck is Maple fretboard so should be bright enough. The closest sound to what I would like would be from this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47PYoNEd4tk Although it's a MM and modified there are lots of others out there getting this tone with other basses. Perhaps it's me.
If your Trace has the "preshape" button, use that. Also, make sure you have the graphic set to the "smiley face" - Lots of low and high frequencies dropping down to the centre indent for the middle channels. Also make sure you have lots of treble and bass boost on your bass preamp. Should sound lovely!
2. Someone mention Mr.Wooten? Seems I'm here just in time For the record, the ideal slap tone is achieved via using nice clean zingy strings & eq-ing lots of highs and lows with flat mid frequencies. So any comment about Marcus Miller's slap tone having no mids is totally correct. Mids are not welcome in slap-land! You need the flat middle for that scooped sound. Just waiting for the same old boring arguments about "barrages of machine gun fire" & "unmusical" to surface now. I do wish someone would come up with something original, I really do.
3. Yes, it looks like they're using the same bodies as the Am.Std this time. It's good business sense to delete the smaller body shape they used to use for the Deluxe model.
4. Another big thumbs up for Alex at the Gallery. He'll look after you no problems. Happy shopping!
5. Buying a six-stringer would seem to be an easier solution...
6. They've finally appeared on the main Fender website... The black Precision looks rather nice There's also sunburst & olympic white, but I couldn't be bothered to copy and paste that many image URL's!
7. Is throwoff playing his basses with a fourteen pound lump hammer? Those midnight wine jazzes are really nice. I had the five string version for a while. The pupil who prised it out of my hands still loves it. Awesome bass.
8. Les, in general terms if you know where you'll play a given note, it's going to be pretty obvious which position it's going to be in. Obviously there's always going to be more than one place to play things & it's just a case of playing things where you're most comfortable and where it makes the most common sense fingering. For students, I mark the position (where the first finger needs to be) with a Roman Numeral & then add fingering where necessary. I'll try and scan an example later on for you to try. Rich.
9.
Look at it this way, it's at least keeping you in the job
That's one way of looking at it, Buzz - Ta!
TAB -use with caution.
Just say NO!!!
10. If this was a five-string I'd trade you something very special. Luckily though, it's not. *Phew* Best of luck with the sale!
11. +1 on Doddy's comments - The biggest problem I find with tablature is the fact that there is no indication of fingering or positioning, so it just creates generation after generation of lazy-arsed players with bad technique and no reading ability. And it's usually my job to try and sort them out. *Sigh*
12. Yep, she's a fabulous player with amazing controlled technique and she sings wonderfully as well. (At the same time.) I shall allow this
13. Some very good points here - Basically, to cut a long story short, the Stingray whether H or HH etc, will give you tone in spade-fulls. They're also a full on funk machine capable of the scooped sound or something more aggressive. The unfinished necks are the only real minus, but that's easily fixable with a good luthier and a little money. Pick up a good Corvette/Streamer $$ & you have all that, but with coil switching between series and parallel (also available on the HH Ray). The Warwick will perhaps be a little less soulful, but the sheer power of the things makes up for it in a myriad of ways! You could always buy a bolt-on Status-Graphite S2-Classic in a similar price range to these two. That would bury the pair of them in terms of clarity and definition & will certainly be a very adaptable bass for all situations. I use mine all the time. In fact, anyone wanna buy a piezo Stingray? It never leaves the house, LOL!
14. Control plate too crowded? I thought basses had to have at least five rotary controls to be any good?
15. As far as I know, the only way to keep a guitard quiet is to ram the offending article up the player's a***! It goes to show how variable even the Stingray necks are - I think of mine as really thin like a jazz, but I have played some that are profiled like 50's Precisions.
16.
was thinking of the squire 'Badtz Marou' (penguin face) or Dean Zone bass in bright green. Not tried either, but for the price ,alot of thought goes into them Don't know how to post pics up
I think you mean these two...
17. I used to just stand there smugly with my graphite neck which rarely if ever goes out of tune!
18. Really nice neck - One of the thinner Precision necks, just a little thicker than a Jazz. Glossed and properly finished, so all in all really nice. Huge output for a passive bass. Much better than the MIM's & Classics. Bargain Pino clones for everyone!
19. I really do like the look of these - I only sold my Sonic Blue one as I hated the "Panda Car Blue" colour!
20. Nice, Bilbo - Listening to it right now...
21. I bought this as part of a job lot at auction from the liquidation of a music shop's stock. It was actually quite dirty and had been a demo model attached to a large Line6 display unit. Everything is in full working order and there are a couple of scratches on the back panel. Comes complete with AC adaptor. Only fault I can find is that there's a metal plate from the advertising display fixing rattling around inside, but I'm not taking it apart to get it out Yours for £100 or trade for a small bass amp like a Roland Bass Cube/RX, etc, or a nice Epiphone EB-3 in cherry with some money your way... Also... An as new Digitech JamMan Looper all boxed, only used once in anger. This is a fabulous looper, but it just sits in it's box. I don't use effects. Can you tell? £100 Rich. 07545 471037
22.
Hi I am having some serious trouble with the phono (female) jack socket on my STATUS S2 it wont keep the jack in!!! I got the original replaced by a Local Luthier but it still wont hold it tight enough to allow me to play. Any suggestions would be welcome / is this a unique problem or do they all fail eventually....where can I get a tight one !!!
You're best off going to Status-Graphite for the original part. Give Dawn a call during business hours on 01206 868150. Rich
23. This is the "Classic" Series 50's I'm after. Stunning bass. I've played one and loved the feel of it. The pickup wasn't up to a deal, though. Very poor output, but I'd replace it quite quickly with a Wizard Thumper. The original style thick neck feels great and they actually bothered to finish it with a lovely lacquer job which makes me happy, at any rate!
24.
I guess now is as good a time as any to ask a question which will make me seem incredibly stupid What's with the thumb rest type thing below the G string? As for me, I'm currently playing a very cheap beginner instrument... So i'd love something like an Ibanez SR300M or one of the yamaha RBX range
The "thumbrest" on the wrong side was originally named the "tug-bar". When Leo Fender originally designed the electric bass as a more portable instrument for double bass players, he envisaged the player plucking with the thumb and anchoring the fingers on the tugbar underneath the strings. It was deleted some time later when most bass players played with their RH fingers and the rest reappeared on the opposite side and became a thumb rest. The SR300M is a great bass, btw
