1. It all depends on the preamp, Michael. On the Stingray I use full bass boost & just a touch of added treble with the mids flat (centred.) On the Status basses I have the treble and bass maxed and the mids flat, but the Status preamp is a totally different animal, running at very different frequencies, so full treble never sounds hissy, just very crisp and sweet. If I ran the Stingray at full treble it would sound terribly hissy! Rich.
2.
I liked the Stingray tone best by far. I also like clacky...but you knew that right? Interesting thread and it just goes to illustrate how people have very different opinions about what a "good" sound is, which should always be born in mind when someone says "bass x sounds great", or "bass y sounds awful".
Quite true, 4000 - It definitely shows that we all have very different tastes. Michael, I liked the Ray with the touch of treble and lots of bass better, but that thing still needs new strings, mate As soon as I can figure out a way of doing it, I'll record mine. May have to do it live on video, as I have no way of plugging into the PC. Rich.
3. Which colour scheme did you end up getting, Pete? I'm glad someone found a good one, as the ones I played have now all been sent back to the distributor by a local dealer. They were all so terrible! Rich.
4. That's a lovely looking bass, Raggy. Is it a brand new one?
5. I may have a problem with this one - Carbon graphite wasn't invented in 1969! I'd have to buy some ghastly wooden plank with the pickup right up against the end of the fingerboard like a Hofner Club. Then again, judging on how I've worn and aged over the last forty years, it'd be a pretty horrid and grimy specimen! Rich.
6. Have a look at my review here
7. EvilLordJuju, that is stunning! Never seen one like that before
8. Hi Linus, it's the Warwick for me with both pickups on full. It has the best tone and a lovely growl to it. Very Status like, which is why I suppose I like it Try recording the Stingray again with clean strings and some bass boost and a touch of treble boost - You'll hear a massive difference. All of the clips sound quite "clacky" - Were you playing with a plectrum or something? Rich.
9. I drove yesterday all the way to Shakenhurst Hall and back to deliver Nick his new Am.Std Jazz bass. What a fine chap and what an amazing house! I hope you enjoy your new bass, mate. Take care! Rich
10. Me too - Back, that is! Now I've owned a Stingray 3eq (with the piezo bridge as well) I can definitely recommend both types. The 2eq is definitely more scooped and a little punchier, but my 3eq although a little clearer overall, has ample punch. The main MusicMan problem I've found is that people have the pickup screwed far too low. If you set the pickup so the polepieces are around 3-4mm below the strings the MM comes to life. Massive tone, massive output. So yes, I finally have a 3eq I like! And no, just like on my Status preamps, I never touch the mid control. It just stays flat (in the centre indent.)
11.
its 401
Wow - I don't know if the serial numbers were seperate for each model at that time [as they are now], but my original Status SII was #402, produced in 1987. Rich.
12. The last couple of EB-0's I've played (usually belonging to pupils) have been really nice sounding and great to play. I've been hanging my nose over the 34" EB-3 in dark cherry for years, LOL! Maybe one day I'll get round to trying one! Rich.
13. Very nice, Michael. Is the Corvette one of the passive ones? I played one of those a while ago & was very impressed with it. Great sound and huge output for a passive bass.
14. What kind of Status 5-string are you after, hen barn? I have a friend who contacted me today selling an Energy 5-string. Price is around £400-450. There's also an Shark 5 on the for sale pages on here. Rich.
15. Very nice, Pete. I liked this bass when it was Sam's & if I'd have had the money at the time, I'd have snapped it up very quickly. Nice score, mate!
16. Tony (Teaser360) was after one of these. Give him a shout
17.
MY sexy baby
Ooh, monorail bridge units - Suits you Sarah! Here're mine...
18.
Every time I pop in this forum its more and more like a carry on film.....
Quite strangely I was just reading old Finnbar Saunders strips from Viz on Google Images, LOL!
19. I hope that wasn't directed at me, Sarah - I love head(less).
20. LOL at Sarah - The "Gah" bit says it all!
21. I usually like mine headless (there's probably an internet business opportunity there!) but I love this KingBass Mk-II 5-string...
22.
Is Wayne going to IBTL?
Quite possibly...
23. *Looks knowingly at Pete & Sarah and promptly rolls around the floor laughing head off!*
24. I had one of these from new & really wanted to like it, but I have to concede that the American basses are better. The shaved down neck has a lovely feel to it, but suffers from it's extreme thinness. Mine would change shape in almost every weather change. I had to reset the trussrod on an almost weekly basis. The American basses with the posiflex graphite rods are a better bet, I've found. The pickups are big on output, but they do tend to be noisy (shielding on the Japanese basses isn't quite up to the level of the current US ones) & I found the sound very "middly". Most Jazz basses give a very scooped sound, but my Geddy was definitely more mid-biased in nature. So all in all a great looking, great to play bass with a fair sound and good output, but the neck issues put me off completely.
25. Hi Laura, welcome to the forum. Those Encore P-bass copies are seriously tough things. There's not much you can do to them that'll harm them! As for strings, try ordering some DR Fatbeams or HiBeams 40-100. The DRs are really nice strings and seem to have a softer feel than the average.
