Hi Alton and welcome - I love Toronto, especially at this time of year. Nothing like that crisp, dry cold. I've done New Year's Eve in Toronto. I think it was something like -37deg in the wind chill. Bracing!

I can certainly see a use for it in certain applications. I do a lot of work with big bands and getting around some of the stupid keys I have to play in is often a pain in the arse. However, a capo moving all the notes around would confuse the hell out of me, so probably not a good idea for me!

I've played a couple and they seem okay for the money. I liked the slightly modified Stingray 5 copy that MB1 had.

Pedullas are some of the most sought after basses around. I love the sound of the Pentabuzz. Never played one, though.

Yes, go for whatever you like the sound and playability of the most. Brand is immaterial at the end of the day.

Hi James, By "24v" do you mean a Fender Jazz 24 5-string? I don't know what the string spacing is like on those, but if it's anything like the standard Jazz 5 spacing, it should be amongst the widest spcing around. Most 4-stringers are 19mm and the wider spaced 5ers are usually 18mm. Obviously, you're never going to get the same dexterity from a wider neck (I started my current pro panto run on one of my 18mm Status 5-stringers but changed over to my 4-string Status S2 instead pretty much for the same reason - That the four is so much faster to play, due to the narrower fingerboard & I have some pretty fast and involved parts to play on this particular job). So if your 5-string bass is pretty standard spacing, it's going to be a case of either coping or playing the job on a four. Rich.

I've looked into these as well. Great ideas and innovation, but whenever I've heard one on videos, etc, they always sound that little bit artificial to me. Lovely design, though.

Yes, I've played through one of the smaller Hartke combos and was very impressed. As the previous poster mentioned, the Ashdown combos give you a lot of bang for your buck. The Electric Blue 180 series are usually bullet proof and if you have a look around you could even get a MAG 2x10 300w combo for under £300. All of these are good amps and offer excellent value. If weight is an issue you can look further up the price range at the MarkBass and Genz Benz combos. They really are excellent, but you're talking literally three times the cost of the Ashdown gear in some cases. I'm sure you'll fond something suitable pretty quickly Rich.

Nice balanced thoughts there, Rayman. I'm glad someone's found a good example, as the ones I tried were horrific. The quality issues apart, I liked the bass itself & the overall design was fresh and well thought out. If they were literally half the price I'd have a hunt for one of those seemingly elusive nice ones.

I had one when they first came out. As Alex mentioned, the stock pickups aren't up to a deal, but that's an easy one to solve. The newer Classic Vibe Jazz is a much better proposition all round, though. It has tons of output & the quality is up there with the best.

Interesting comment a few posts back regarding double ball end strings. Yes, they are the ones Status in particular recommends, but you really can use either. If you want to use standard strings, just screw down the [provided] gromits into the top holes on the retainer & clip off the string ends with some cutters flush with the top of the retainer. Easy. Quite strangely, all of the crew who have marvelled over my S2 over the past few weeks have only commented on the lovely wood & the graphite neck. No one's ever commented about it being headless. At the end of the day, Status is meant to be headless

If you're thinking of getting a Status neck, then I'd use Status for the refinish as well. Their finishes are second to none.
