1. Nice bass, James! I looked at that one a few times when it was on the stock pages of the Shuker website a while back. Nice score What's it like, then?
2. I think they're a natural successor to the SUB brand yes, but they also fill the gap left by the OLP basses.
3. The relative height from one end to the other isn't usually an issue - The main thing is to make sure that the strings follow the curvature of the fingerboard in a smooth curve. The relative heights of the E & G can also depend a lot on string guages & brand.
4. As far as I know, they're the same, thebuckets. The current model came out about January 2008.
5.
That's a bit like saying we should all shag a chimp isn't it?
You can if you like, but personally I prefer the idea of extinction!
6.
Now there's a man who knows what a bass should look like.
That'd be me!
7.
I had a play of one of these precisions the other day and really enjoyed it. I wouldnt even worry about the thumper unlss you really do find it lacking. Anyway, I hope you find the swine that took an axe to them statii!
Heh! That's how basses are meant to be, Ste. They balance better and you don't knock into stuff all the time. Perfection!
8. I use my Shuttle 6.0 mainly through only one of the 12" cabs. It seems ample for most occasions and never overloads the speaker/horn. But I do still have the other 12" cab for when things get noisy and I need the full 600w.
9.
Very nice collection! For me, you can't beat a Stingray in natural finish - simple, classic look.
Yes, I must admit that the piezo-Ray is one of my favourites. It's a stonking bass and very different to so many other Stingrays I've played.
10. Very nice, Andy. Matching pair!
11.
OTPJ you are man who's taste in ALL things bass I have allways found without question and completly "spot on" ( and stil do ) but that westone "rail"???? what were you thinking of? a bad day? some chemical fuelled ( it was 1989) dalliance? eeeeeewwwwhhhhh!!!! love W
Many thanks for the compliment, Witterth, but Fred's "Rail" was a seriously cool bass. The whole point of the rail-based pickup was you could adapt it for so many different bass sounds just by sliding the pickup along the "rail." Such a simple idea, but very effective. I've been waiting for one to come up for sale on here for a long time now. It will come...
12.
Heh, I honestly expected you to take after your brother and have a bigger collection. Very nice collection though, the only thing missing is a P-bass style
Heh! That's the difference between Nick & myself - I tend to sell on the stuff I'm not using, so I'm always careful to only own basses that are earning me money. Yes, I've tried Precisions, but the only one I've truly liked was Peter's (Greeneking) American Vintage 62 RI. I may have a look at one of the Mex classic 57's with the gold anodized scratch plate and put a Wizard Thumper in it, though. We'll see...
13. I'm waiting for someone to turn up on here with a "Rail." Fred.T.Baker had one when I had a couple of lessons with him in the late 80's. Seriously cool thing!
14.
Yes, fantastic collection there Rich. See you went for the Genz Benz. How are you finding it? The S2s really are the best lookers. The myrtle face is a work of art. Rob chose that so well.
Hey Graham, yes Rob did choose that one particularly well, didn't he? I'm actually planning a run down to the factory in the new year, as the Myrtlewood bass isn't quite up to the output specs of the walnut one. I'm sure a fine tune will have it shouting in a biblical manner! The Genz Benz is excellent. Still getting used to the twin controls for the preamp, but apart from that, it's a great sounding, highly portable rig. One cab seems ample so far. I'm sure I'll be on an ear plugs job soon where both cabs and all 600w will be needed, though!
Stingray5 Posted Today, 07:18 PM Great collection, Rich. But who's the kid in the glasses at the back? Does he ever get a look in?
Haha! Yes, the Triumph upright gets used quite a lot. It was a surefire hit at the Keswick Jazz festival this year!
doctor_of_the_bass Posted Today, 04:30 PM That bass is perhaps the finest 5 I've played - beautiful tone, and plays like warm butter! Brother! Didst thee receiveth mine PM!? Ciao! Nick
Ah yes Brother, I did! I'll be replying this very eve I've been involved in significant quantities of giggage over the last couple of days. The game pie was rather good as well!
15.
An amazing collection. The pick of the bunch for me is the 5 string Status and the SR4 - simple, classic and beautiful. What's the fretboard wood on the 5 string Status?
Ta! The fingerboard is what they call "phenowood." It's basically paper mixed with the graphite binding resin, but it looks like and feels like real wood. Work that one out!
16. The original TRB's are beyond reproach. The through neck design model has all the quality and sounds you'll ever need or want. Same goes for the bolt on TRB-II, really. I had a Nathan East model of the original TRB-5 & then later had a bolt on TRB-6 II. Both excellent basses & nothing wrong with either.
17. Thought it was time to get everything together for a shoot...
18. Only setee contribution I have is a pic from about a year or two ago, but you are all inspiring me to do a group shot of the full rig and collection...
19. You won't regret this one, Dave. I've gigged mine for about three years now & it's still my favourite upright.
20. Very very nice - I've played a couple of these "Supremes" & they are spectacular basses. I'd quite like one myself!
21.
You'll be needing a Ric then
Chris, don't (I repeat) don't encourage him! Nice find, Clarky. Very very nice...
22. I hope they gave you a huge discount in the "scratch'n'dent" sale! Seriously though, congrats. Sounds like it's more than you'd hoped for!
23. Hi Alan, are you after one of the earlier 15mm models like Peter's, or one of the more recent 18mm 5's? I'll keep a lookout for you...
24. Only one regret and that's my original Status SII #402. I had a chance about a year ago to get it back, but right at the last minute, the money didn't transpire. I know who has it now & he doesn't want to sell it. So I'll bide my time & it may come back one day. Why do we let the special basses we've had for a long time slip away?!
25. I think a lot of it is down to what you like and the type of music you play. The Precision has a lot of romance and history attached to it, and in a lot of ways, it is the original but by no means is it the best in the present day. If you just play driving rock/blues music and you want your bass sound to blend into the mix, then use a P. But if you want some sparkle and something that cuts through the mix, then look elsewhere. I've tried to love the Precision and after having owned four of them (all of which have been sold on), I can safely say that the P doesn't suit any of the music I play or (more importantly) my playing style. I've wanted to love the Precision design but it's just not for me. A clear case of horses for courses
