Hmmm... Rickenbackers are okay. Lovely to look at but the sound is pretty generic and they're merely okay to play. Some weigh more than the Queen Mary, too! Hofners are great little basses. Strung with a nice set of flats, they make an excellent instrument for 60's acts or even jazz bands. Seriously smooth sound, although I ended up selling mine due to lack of use. 5+ stringers are excellent. There are so many occasions where the lower range comes in handy and the extra top string on a six makes for easy access to higher notes. Wonderful things! Active basses are great. I've even got an outboard preamp for my passive basses! The added power and evenness of delivery makes for something indispensable in my view. Yes, every electric bass player should learn to play upright. After all, the double bass is the electric bass' direct ancestor. They go together like bread and butter!

Yes, Todd was telling me that some of the monies raised would be going to one of the cancer charities. Check with Andre at statii.com for full details.

That red 30th is a stunning looking bass

All of the early Status basses have that very small distance between the body & the top of the fingerboard. I have one friend who swears by that design. All of the new ones (with the monorail bridge units) have much greater clearance, due to a taller piece of fingerboard at the body end. You wouldn't find that problem with any of the modern basses.

They're definitely both there. The main ad for the raffle is on the main statii page & Rob has a link on the Status site, about the third item down... Here's the one from Statii... http://www.statii.com/forum/news.php?readmore=80

Hey everyone, Andre at Statii.com & Rob Green at Status are putting up a brand new Status Streamline as the prize in a charity raffle. This is also open to BC'ers. Best of luck, everyone! The 2009 statii.com Christmas raffle! The prize… A brand new, just out of the polishing room, stunning Status Streamline Bass! worth up to £1,500. It's either 4 or 5 string (up to you if you win)! This is the one bass every Status owner should have in their armoury. Ultimately portable and playable even the ugly amongst us will pull hot chicks! This bass is a natural graphite weave with standard 19mm string spacing and 34" scale. Each numbered ticket is just £20 and you can buy as many as you like! Why not ask your wife to buy you one ... Or ask someone else's wife to buy you one! The raffle opens on November 20th and closes on December 10th 2009 at midnight (CET). The draw will take place at the Status factory the following week and the winning ticket will be pulled out of a hat by Rob Green (the maker!) Good luck and start buying (see the main News thread for the link) your tickets now! I love the feel of it on the 35-120's. It's extremely flexible & there doesn't seem to be any discernable loss of tone. They actually suit the bass very well, even the lighter B-string has plenty of tension and growl to it. The 4-string Stingray piezo has the FatBeams on it, 40-100. DR strings always seem to be much softer anyway, so that set suits the Ray down to the ground. I briefly had some 40-100 Rotos on my Sterling Ray 34 & they had far too much tension. Shows how much difference there is between different brands!

That'll be this very weekend, Steve. I'll use the piezo Ray for one of the evenings at Mr.B's in Barlow, Chesterfield & may give the Stingray 5 a road test on Sunday in Gainsborough. I've actually put a set of Status Hotwire 35-120's on the 5. Suits it really well. No buzz and excellent flexibility. I may yet change it over to my usual 40-guage DR Fatbeams at some point. We'll see...
it just doesn't have the same ring to it does it? shockingly enough, i've never tried a status, though i would like to. I guess the body shape just does't really appeal to me. Neither does the concept of more expensive double ball strings, i can't afford regular strings as it is
The good news is that the Status basses take either single or double ball end strings...
thanks Rich, totally love her, i have got myself a nice pearloid scratchplate on her now pics to follow
You should have said, Tony - I've got a black pearloid geniune MM one that I took off mine!

Heh! As I was saying, you're going to have to become known as "High-End Bassist" from now on. Yes, I like to boost the hell out of things at times as well. Really loving the Ray sound at the moment. I'm actually very surprised at how close the Stingray 5 is to a Status in how the sound responds as you play. I can see why people hum and har between the two now.
-
I love your new bass Sam, btw! I looked at that one when the previous owner first put it up for sale, but it was way over budget for me at the time, so I ended up getting my piezo Ray instead. Are you pleased with the sounds available from the HH setup? Rich.
-
Indeed it is, Mart - And I think it looks quite nice, especially as so many people don't like glossed necks.
awesome seems a good pair to have with the different magnets and coil tap in the 5. I still really want a sterling 5 You should take some proper pics in the light tomorrow or something, that pearl blue is a beautiful colour in the right light!
Ah, thanks for that Sam - I'd forgotten the 5 has the ceramic magnets like a Sterling. I was wondering why the sound was so different to the piezo Ray!
-
That's an interesting viewpoint, James. Why is that so different from the MusicMan finish change between headstock and neck, which on my Stingray 5 is satin to bare wood? Admittedly on my Stingray piezo, there's no divider as such, as the neck has been refinished in satin lacquer.
-
Here you go... How's about a four and a five? I'm actually very impressed with the 5er. It's a very different beast to the 4, with a much more natural scooped sound (in parallel mode, anyway.) Almost more polite than the four. Lovely basses all round
Does mine count???
Most definitely, Tony! It's a cracking bass, that one! I have two MM's now. Pictures to follow in a bit...

Is that the one that was for sale with the two dargie delights? I think you're going to have to change your name, mate!

Very nice, Stag. The new semi-transparent 3TS is lovely, isn't it? What made you choose the Precision in the end? I thought you were looking at a Jazz last time we conversed on here...
Tell us all about the Enfield then !!
Where do I start with the Enfield? The sound is immense and as adaptable as anything could be. Each half of the "super 8" pickup can be run as single coil, split coil, or humbucker. There's a parametric sweep on the mids & the only thing I can't personally get along with is the "V" shaped neck. It's made of two separate pieces of wood, so you can feel a definite ridge in the middle. Certainly makes you keep your thumb in the right place, though! Build quality is excellent as well. I'll withhold a verdict until I've heard it on some decent strings, though. Nick will be able to tell you more about it... -
Oh Rich, how could you show such obcene pictures. I think the moderators should pull you up on that one. But seriously, I am green with envy. Is there a bass on the market that Nick does not own. Just some beauties there. Lucky guys.
I don't think so, Graham! Don't forget, that's only a small selection from the 68! -
Okay, so my brother Nick [doctor_of_the_bass] and I had a mini bass bash and a meal up here this evening. Here are the results. Nick brought up seven basses, one of which I have on long term loan & we literally played and discussed the merits of every single one of our basses on site. So without further ado, here's the obscenity in person... Full L to R listing... Enfield, Status S2000, Stingray 2eq, Pangborn Warrior(?), Vigier Arpege, MusicMan Stingray 5, Vigier Arpege fretless, Status Streamline, Status S2 BO 5, Am.Std Jazz, CIJ 75 Jazz, Status S2 5 (Miss.Myrtle), Status S2 walnut, MusicMan Stingray piezo. Highlights - Nick's amazing fretless Vigier Arpege with the brass fingerboard. Best fretless bass I've ever played or heard! Oh, and the hyper technical Enfield bass. I think this is truly the original multi-purpose bass. There's nothing this instrument can't do!

All of the Stingray 5 and HH models have the toggle switch. Whether it's the 3 position (series/parallel/single) or the 5 position (front/outer coils/everything/inner coils/back), I don't know.

A week is a long time in bass guitars......

Nice CV Jazz, mate! That's how I do it usually... Buy a couple of bargains & gradually trade away until I have something I really like and keep.
