1. Yes, again agreed entirely. I've travelled up and down the country and traded with some great people, met some great new friends, etc. Without BC, none of that would have been possible. It's almost like a gentleman's club that fittingly allows in the ladies, too
2. That's a lovely looking bass, Steve. Very rare around these here parts too, by the looks of it!
3.
Hey thanks. By the way, I loved your thread on my life in bass with all the pictures of your basses over the years. Great idea.
Thanks, mate - That's actually only the last four years! Thankfully, the previous sixteen years were filled with just one Status SII and one or two "second" basses that were usually sold off because the Status was so good. Before that there were just two others from when I was about 17. Oh so long ago!
4. Ha, indeed! Why get a mortgage for this when you can have a nice new shiny one for under a thousand?! And if you really want an early 60's stack-knob, Fender will make you a shiny new one for about £1300! Yep, I still don't geddit
5.
I've got mine wearing Pyramid Black Nylon Tapes.
Ooh, kinky!
6. Nice! Getting excited, Mr.Stag?
7. Wow, a lot of strong opinion on this one. No, I didn't read the whole bloated thing, just the last couple of pages. It's funny, really - I like basses and bass gear in general. I make most of my living using the stuff. All I can really think of is that I can't stand bigoted, over-opinionated people. Remember, if you're going to talk the talk, make sure you can walk the walk...
8. Like all brands, the necks are of various thicknesseseses The Corvettes are usually the nice jazz-esque profiles & the Streamers are the thick precision-style necks usually, but there are of course some exceptions in both cases. Best Warwicks for me have been the original Corvette $$ I had (That was a stonking all round bass, great to play hard and fast and a huge sound) and the Thumb bolt on Dirty Blonde. That was a truly great sounding bass which I almost traded a KingBass 5-string for at the time.
9. I like the cool looking Ampeg & the retro curly lead the best! I actually played a mate's wedding in the summer through one of the smaller Ampeg combos and it was a lovely sounding amp. Nice looking setup, Jambo!
10. Just weighed my American Standard, much to the hilarity of Mrs.OTPJ It came out as just a shade over 9.1 pounds. Obviously they'll all be slightly different due to wood density, etc.
11. Heh! Told you all that these basses are damned good I ought to be on bloody commission from Fender!
12.
Ah, so that's where it ended up! Congrats to Dave for the sale - and well done to OTPJ for the purchase. Finally got a decent bass in the collection then?!
Haha Yes, it's a really nice bass. It's been a gradual evolution to getting a MusicMan bass for me. I first got the bug when I played a new 2EQ model fresh out of the box at Electro & then went through an OLP MM22 and later a SBMM Ray 34. In between every other "real" Ray I played never made the mark of the black 2eq one I played. That's why I took my time and chose carefully. Now I have a stonker & I'm happy on the EBMM front... ...Now, how about a Bongo 5...? AAARRRGGGHHH!
13. Hi everyone, just a quick one to say that Nathan came all the way to South Humberside from Cambridge to buy a bass from me yesterday. Nice guy & very smooth transaction. Highly recommended!
14. Well, I'm a latecomer to the club, but here's mine... It's a June 2000 piezo model with the neck refininshed in satin lacquer by a luthier. Set it up to my tastes this morning (rasied the pickup to about 3mm off the strings in the middle & added some nice 40-100 FatBeams.) Gigged it at lunchtime & it's got an utterly massive tone - Very very impressed! Apologies for re-use of Dave's pics. I'll do some more when I get a moment...
15.
I have been starring at it since you psoted it up!! I would really love to buy it, but I just dont have the funds, and want to give the credit card a break over Xmas. Annoying thing is I just got a cheque for £500 from my Grandma's will, but its already all spent. I owe my misses £300 and my car tax is due at the end of the month, which is £215. Im pretty sure my local music shop doesnt stock these, but I might give the Ray a chance if I can find one to try out somewhere. I've run out of things to sell aswell, so its a case of having to save up unfortunately.
Not a problem Mine's sold now, but you're onto a winner with one of those. Either that, or wait for a really good used Stingray to come up. The one I bought last night is a belter! Rich.
16. **NOW SOLD!** Many thanks for all the interest
17. Not wanting to advertise here, but I have a SBMM Ray 34 for sale on the forum, LOL! Anyway, to the point in question... Yes, the Ray 34 is very very good. I actually bought a piezo Stingray last night & I got a chance this morning to A/B the two against eachother. The Ray does indeed sound just like a MusicMan. Now, bearing in mind that my Stingray [proper] is almost ten years old, the only real difference between the two is the quality of the woods used. There's nothing wrong with the Ray 34, it's just a little more polite sounding and a little more top-endy. I'd imagine this is mainly due to the use of much younger (and cheaper) swamp ash/maple in the construction. But all in all, don't be frightened to go for the Ray 34. It's an excellent bass. If my EBMM didn't have the piezo bridge, I wouldn't have bothered, to be honest. The SBMM basses are that good. Rich.
18. Swedish for BUMP! Okay, so I just A/B'd this against my piezo Stingray & it sounds the same! Maybe a little brighter overall, due to the woods being ten years newer, but definitely 100% Stingray!
19. Very nice setup The G&L & Status make for a very nice contrast in sounds. What's the Warwick rig like?
20. The Squier Classic Vibe 50's Precision & the Fender '51/Sting all have a tree trunk of a neck that's surprisingly comfortable to play. Also, the new MIM Classic Series 50's Precision (the ones with the small/tall tuners & gold anodised guard) has a lovely thick neck profile.
21. Just did a mammoth trip to the North East this evening & bought a bass from Dave. Lovely guy & an instrument in amazing condition! Highly recommended
22.
This looks interesting, whats the deal with these? are they made by ernie ball, same electrics a stingray? is it what replaced the sub bass?
The electrics are exactly the same as the Stingray, just made offshore. Preamp levels are supposed to be identical. The only "deal" with these is that they're not made in Californa, but instead in the Cort factory in Indonesia that makes the Squier VM's & some of the Laklands (if I'm not mistaken!) Quality is top notch & it sounds and plays just like a Ray. End of
23. Nice finds, Steve. MK certainly doesn't dance round like a mad punk rocker these days! The Jaydees sound a lot more effects laden then his current KingBasses as well.
