1. Surprisingly enough, I love that side and all the sides to his playing. I think it's amazing & it encourages me to become a better and better bass player. If everything was meant to be pleasing to the ear, we'd all be working for Satan Cowell.
2. Heh! Once again, we descend into Victa-bashing. Those of us who really understand Mr.Wooten know that if you look at his mastery of multiple techniques, he is, as Stanley Clarke himself commented, the most complete bass player on the planet. But I think that people still miss the point with him - Victor is all about pushing the boundaries of not only bass, but of music as an entirety. One particular track that stands out in my mind is the one on "Yin-Yang" where he actually sets music to a recording of his infant daughter talking "baby-talk." In terms of creativity, it's astounding that he could have found and made "music" from not only the vocal pitches, but also the speech/silence rhythms as well. It's utterly amazing & one of the most interesting pieces of music I've ever heard. He's a musician for us to aspire to and nothing less. ThisNameIsTaken, you should have worked for Pravda in the 1930's... "Dimitri Shostakovich - Lady MacBeth - Chaos instead of music!"
3. I did a few classical recordings in Spain of all places, but don't get to do much in the way of popular stuff. I've been asked to do some for one ex-chart band on a new album & I've got the contracts for another album with a new solo artist, but we'll see what comes of those particular jobs. I can see the new solo artist album being a bit of a cut and paste job, as the producer is pro tools mad!
4. Strangely enough, I've never seen anyone selling MM wooden necks, either. I'm sure someone will come along with an answer, but in the meantime, all I can come up with is the expensive (but by all accounts excellent) Status-Graphite option, or buying a cheap used OLP and retro fitting the neck from that.
5. Have a look at www.bassguitarpartsdirect.co.uk
6. Another stunning example, BRX Leave me these two in your will, will you?
7.
It sounds silly, but Fender's habit of putting the white side-dots half-and-half between the rosewood and the maple make them very difficult to see on a darkish stage for me with my poor eyesight - and I've found that very important. The black side-dots on the maple board instruments are much easier for me to see. YMMV
That's where the front and side white LED's on my Status Streamline come in very handy, especially in dark theatre pits!
8. Very nice, especially the Sadowsky & Sandberg.
9. Vic would win, of course! Damn! I've still never seen the Flecktones live (my favourite band!) Typically, I'm starting a week's show that day as well!
10. Previously I had a MarkBass CMD 115P mini combo with a traveller 2x10 head. I sold this on and now do most smaller gigs & theatre jobs with my Roland Bass Cube 100 which is a very versatile little amp if you're not dealing with noisy b*****d gutarists! The 'Cube is usually ample enough against a large big band or to fill a theatre. Now I've got a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 coming with two Neox 112T cabs. Should have me covered for most eventualities! Rich.
11. Did somebody say "graphite"?? Ooh, that's nice! Best of luck with the sale
12. I haven't played the Spector Legend, but I've played one of the top limited edition NS5 models & a Euro LX5. Very nice basses. Depending on the quality of the Legend, it could also be a pretty good bass. You'd have to find one in a store and try it...
13. Excellent playing as per usual from Mr.Feraud! I can do scale based and modal runs like him, but only at about half the speed. Astounding! Never heard of the other guy, but he's very melodic when he gets going
14.
Hi Rich - I didn't spot my old Status Shark you bought off me!
Good point - There are a few not there... Your old Shark is one of them. It looks amazing now, btw! It's been refinished in Mitsubishi sparkling black graphite. The new owner loves it and did his Rock School grade 8 on it! There's also the Yamaha BB714BS Billy Sheehan signature, a black BB614 and a Sonic Blue CV Precision that I never got a chance to get pics of & the fretless Squier VMJ I got off Nick. I'm sure they've all gone to good homes, anyway
15. People like Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, Jaco, etc, are there to inspire us to become better musicians. To lift the bass from the back of the band to become an equal to the (most definitely) fret-w*****g guitarists. But at the end of the day, whether you play a billion notes per bar or just four, as long as you make it musical, with groove and sparkle, that's just fine. As someone else said in this thread, there's room for all styles of player & all opinions. Remember, opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one. Doesn't mean any of us are actually right.
16. From personal experience, I'd say the new maple board models are a little brighter and more percussive. Not much in it though, to be honest.
17. Bloody hell, Andy! Are you trying to create a blood bath in here with that new price? Someone has to buy this and become a "Bongoid" at this insane price! If I hadn't just bought a beautiful Stingray I'd be knocking your door down with 650 pictures of her majesty!
18. Some of the Mexican instruments are really nice, both to play and in quality terms, but I've never encountered a Fender preamp I liked the sound of. They always sound harsh and nasty to me. Better off investing your hard earned into an American Standard (far superior bass) and then buying something like a Sadowsky preamp (either onboard or outboard pedal version.) Then you'll be smiling.
19. I wish you'd stop showing that Overwater Original, X I played the four string version in a local music shop when I was an 18 year old college student & loved everything about it but could never afford one at the time. I've never seen one for sale since, perhaps fortunately as well! Congrats for the umpteenth time on a stunning example of one of my favourite all time basses, X
20. I used to have one of those. Nice bass. Mine was the 3TS with maple fingerboard. Only reason I sold was that I don't like the Precision sound, so I got the Jazz in the same colour scheme instead. Excellent choice, Sir! The new 3TS is very red/crimson based so it looks fabulous in certain lights as well. The main thing I love apart from the new bits on the latest MIA basses is the glossed lacquer maple fingerboard and the satin lacquered neck. No more of that cheap and nasty feeling bare wood. This is how it should be done!
21. A well set up Corvette $$ will blow your mind. Excellent basses.
22. The two that impressed me were the JO4 in natural (apart from the curiously narrow string spacing) & the DJ5 which produced THE classic jazz bass sound straight out of the box. Lovely things & cograts on the endorsement. Rich.
23. Thanks, SC. The 5-string Jazz was a nice one. Typical of a Mex Jazz, it was a little underpowered in the pickup department, but it was a really nice bass. Really nailed the Marcus sound through my pupil's Trace rig, too. Rich.
24. Okay, so I've put the phrase "Grand Reward Education and Entertainment" into a babel fish Chinese translator & it came out with... 盛大奖励教育和娱乐 There's your answer I like this one better, though... 性交,如果我知道!
25. I liked your trascription of the Bach Double, Bilbo! I'll zap through that one later
