1. Wow - A bass with a sequential gear shift!
2. That's odd. Sounds as if someone's drilled the hole bigger or something. Easy solution is to get a new bridge. Otherwise, perhaps your E-string was non-standard? For bridges, try here... www.bassguitarpartsdirect.co.uk
3. I think you did the right thing, too. That's your bass & it should stay that way. Now get it played
4. You shouldn't normally get a difference in level as such, just a difference in frequency. Traditionally, you'll get a thicker, richer sound from a neck pickup & a thinner, higher frequency sound from a bridge pickup. That's why the even blend of the two is such a lovely sound. In the case of a typical single coil equipped Jazz bass, the two pickups cancel eachother out to a point when both are at full volume. That's where the "burpy" jazz sound comes from. The G&L is one of the few basses where you can actually select between the two seperately via a micro switch. If you're used to a Stingray sound, the G&L is a good platform from which to try out new sounds and configurations.
5. Having met the man in question a couple of times (and he is a really nice guy, too), whether or not you like what he does, he did do one thing. He made a whole generation of bass players work hard to try and emulate him. None of this current day instant gratification nonsense, just pure hard practise to achieve something and become better bass players. Whether you're a simplistic root note rock music plodder or a jazz/funk twiddler, players like Mark King are and should be considered as a welcome inspiration to us all.
6.
Be prepared for 'I've bought these air tickets to Sri Lanka........!' Sorry for thread hi-jacking (notttttt!) As you were!
That's what I usually get... OTPJ: I've ordered another Status... Mrs.OTPJ: That's okay, you're taking me to Florida again for Xmas...
7. Is that a black Precision Lyte at the top right of the "family" pic?
8. I always use the same settings on the bass for every gig, whether it's a passive or active instrument. The Status basses' eq is usually set at maximum treble & bass with the mids in the flat position. This gives a very sweet sound due to the higher freqencies adopted by the Status preamp. The Stingray is always on full bass boost, mids flat & a slight treble lift & the Jazzes are always all three controls set to max. I tend to change my tone between numbers by playing in a different area of the instrument. For example, for upbeat stuff or bossanovas, I'll be playing in the sweet spot in between the pickups & for smoother swings and ballads I'll be playing up over the end of the fingerboard for a smoother and bassier sound. Soloing is usually over the back pickup.
9. Well the bass is gradually becoming a project. The scratch guard was first and I've now ordered a Gotoh 201 (good for my pocket due to the current BadAss famine!) bridge which should be here in the next few days. I was initially worried about the increased height due to saddle size, but I can either swap the barrels over between the two bridges or use the micro-tilt system on the RI's neck plate to shim it a little if needed. Next job will be full internal shielding & I'm still thinking about those Nordstrand pickups...
10. Looks like a really nice combination - P body, jazz neck, 3-band eq. All the goodies and none of the hardships. Apart from the bent-tin bridge, but that's easily remedied. Nice bass. I have to admit to quite liking the simpler 50's P in black/gold/maple. I'd have to spend a fortune kitting it out with a serious pickup and bridge etc, though...
11. Well, the 75RI has gone from dull parchment scratch plate to cool pearloid white to go with the pearloid block markers. Thought I'd use the opportunity to get some good shots of my other Jazz bass at the same time! The Japanese bass just needs some decent pickups and a more substantial bridge & we're there The old in white... And the new pearloid look... Some more of my '09 American Standard for good measure. The light was good this afternoon...
12.
How do you guys, married or otherwise, manage to juggle different bands?
I suppose as a pro, I have to take whatever pays the most. I'm in the lucky position where Mrs.OTPJ also works very odd hours, so the work always comes first.
13. Okay, so I've got a couple of years old Japanese 75 RI Jazz. Lovely looker with a tone to die for, but crap output compared to my 09 American Standard Jazz & lots of top end buzz, again unlike my ultra silent American Jazz. I'm thinking of getting the pickups swapped out for some tasty Nordstrands, but wondered why the Jap Jazzes always suffer with the single coil crackle? My Geddy Lee was exactly the same. Why is the American Standard so different, even though the Japanese pickups are meant to be "American Vintage" models? In the same token, which Jazz pickups do you recommend for high output & huge tone? Rich.
14. I always send them tuned to concert pitch. Always best to keep a wooden neck at it's preferred and settled angle. Remember that once the neck has settled in an untensioned state, it'll take a week or so to settle down again. Leave well alone. Not that I like posting instruments. Only the cheap ones get mailed. The expensive ones I deliver personally to anywhere in the UK (within reason) or meet up with the buyer.
15. These are a really resonant rich sounding bass. Bargain! Best of luck with the sale Is that a bright red or the usual dark cherry they do, btw?
16. All I can say is... Oh dear... Has it really come to this??
17. Heh, good to hear Alex. Seems like the last couple of days was a bit of a Streamline weekend. I played mine on a short session on Saturday & it cut through like nothing else on the recordings, then did a jazz gig on it yesterday lunchtime. The engineer just beams when I bring the Streamline, commenting that it just sings in every register with utter clarity and massive tone. He loves the white LED's as well There's nothing quite like them. If it wasn't for producers and MD's wanting a classic bass from time to time, I'd probably just play my Streamline full time! Rich.
18. A bit different? Indeed it is! Did you see my latest purchase on the non-graphite thread?
19. Well done, Brother! The Vigier looks especially nice! Rich.
20. The last album they did, "Snakes and Arrows" is a pretty good look at the style. The all time classic track to download is, "Tom Sawyer", though.
21. Hey Martin, I was thinking Badass II, but there's none anywhere in the country. I think Leo Quan has gone bust or something. I found a supplier of the new Fender hi-mass bridge, same as I've got on my 09 Jazz & it looks like it'd fit, the three holes coinciding with the three central holes (out of 5) on the Jap Jazz. Apart from that, it's a Gotoh 201, I guess.
22. Hi Graham, I think it's mainly that they rob the bass of some of it's thicker tone. Similar guage lighter DR Fatbeams don't seem to do that, especially on my 09 Am.Std. Jazz. May have to try a set on the 75 RI soon.
23. ***NOW SOLD*** Thanks for all the interest! Okay, so I want a more traditional (yep, this is me we're talking about here!) wooden 5-stringer, so I'm putting this beauty up for grabs... ACG Harlot R-Type (because it has the ®ecurve style single cut treatment) 5-string. Body is Black Walnut with a 5mm Zebrano accent strip & Rosewood top. The set neck is a 7-piece laminate, consisting of Mac Ebony/Bubinga/Maple/Wenge & twin graphite rods. Acrylic impregnated Zebrano finger board with 35" scale, alloy side dots and no radius. Finish is a flawless gloss all over. It's basically stunning! The ACG 01 filter-based preamp is a work of art in itself. All sounds are available from P to J to serious Dub bass & ultra hifi. There's nothing this instrument can't do, really. Currently set up on Status Hotwire 35-120's, but can be easily put back onto the original DR 45's which I still have. In cash terms, I'm looking for £900 collected or delivered, either way. As for trades I'd be interested in high quality 5-stringers such as 08/09 American Standard Jazzes or Sadowsky 5's. Phone anytime to enquire further about this fantastic instrument. 07545 471037 Rich.
