1. Proportions wise, the quarter will look short and dumpy, whereas the half will look fine. Halves are usually pretty good players all said and done, anyway. Yes, three quarters are the norm, but the smaller sizes still make the right noises Only thing to watch with a Zeller is the ultra thick front panel. I've seen it on their violins and cellos. For some reason they don't bother to shape the inside of the front, so you get a massively thick panel which traps all the sound. The end result is a much thinner, quieter sound. See what you think to it, anyway Rich.
2. I've always fancied a mighty Bongo HH. Luckily, I've never happened on one in a store or elsewhere, so I've never got hooked on them. Egyptian Smoke for me.
3. Wow! It'd have to be a very special jazz to swap for those two. Best of luck with it.
4. I don't know about a difference in tension, but through body stringing does give a thicker tone with more bottom end. I love the difference on my Am.Std. Jazz.
5.
If it wasnt so minty I might have looked, but I need a totally hammered one because its gonna get gigged, hard!
No matter how hard these basses are gigged, if you look after them, they'll still look great in twenty years' time!
6. Very very nice, Dave. I wish I could go back to just the one bass...
7.
Do you stare at your neck?
Usually I can only see it in a mirror...
8. I had that problem with my 09 Am.Std, so I tested the same set of strings on another jazz & got the same result. The E string was just duller than the rest of the set. Rich
9. I started off as a classical player at school - Cello & double bass. Later on in my teens I discovered that the electric bass was identical to play to the double bass & that was it! Those are my main three. I studied as a double bass player/cellist/conductor at Birmingham. One trick is to be able to diversify. I also teach violin, viola, piano & classical guitar. (Also electric guitar if I absolutely have to!) I make my living as an instrumental teacher & from professional playing these days. Moreso the playing at the moment, since I left my post as head of music at a school earlier this year. I mainly play in jazz bands and in musical theatre. But at the end of the day, I'll play for anyone who pays me! Recent jobs have been the premiere of a new musical in Sheffield (cello), sight reading Buddy Rich arrangements for an Army Big Band & in December/Jan I'll be the bass player for the Sheffield Professional Pantomime with Toyah Wilcox in the lead. A lot of the work comes from contacts you make along the way. I moved into my current area in 2004 & one of the first things I did was to make contact with the local music shops. One shop in particular got me into one theatre company & from there, I now do all the bass playing for 6 theatre companies over a 100 mile radius & a lot of other work besides.
10. As mentioned above, the Sterling is now SOLD and subject to a deal on a certain Status...
11. Potential edit? The non-graphite collection going through significant shrinkage?
12.
I bought one of those last year to take to a festival with me. It was the natural one tho not the black one. Action was TERRIBLE, fretbuzz on EVERY fret except 3 frets on the A string. Tried sorting the truss rod out to no avail. It ended up like this....
You may very well think you're uber-cool for burning a bass in the middle of a field, but may I just remind you that we can see your pants over the top of your trousers. Very uncool indeed
13.
I knew the wood was only a (very) passing phase Rich and that the lure of (yet) more Graphite would rear its head once more. Moral of the story Rich, stop going into Electro and trying all Dave's new basses out.
Not at all, Brother Mart... I'm really into the wood at the moment, but a certain Status I really wanted a while back has come up again and been offered to me, so I'm pondering that at the moment. As for Electro, yes it's the spawn of Satan!
I'd have this in a flash but as usual need to shift other gear Just to confirm the price is correct?
Adee, yes it's quite correct. Very reasonable, considering the £60 worth of extras with it
The spectre of Mike Prince??? I'll just get my coat...
*Shhh* Graham! He's around selling his KB at the moment Only difference is that I don't "BUY HIGH, SELL LOW!"
Price include shipping ?
raef, shipping would be the usual £15-20 depending weight.
14. Okay, could be all change here with the possibility of another Status bass that's just been offered to me, so I'm putting these up for a quick sale... **STERLING NOW SOLD** **JAZZ NOW SOLD** Here's the bass we're all raving about - A Squier Classic Vibe 60's Jazz in white/tort. This is also as new & plays/sounds just as you want it to. You know that somewhat elusive jazz bass sound we're all after? Well, this has it in spades! Also set up with 40-100 DR Fatbeams & supplied with a really thickly padded Boston gigbag. Yours for £250. Feel free to call me with regards to either of these lovely instruments on 07545 471037, as I'm playing my cello in a show during the evenings this week... Rich.
15. I have the standard white 'Vibe & it's a great bass. Unless you love the signatory or the colour, I see no point in paying the extra £60 or so over the CV model. Nice looking bass, though.
16. Some excellent budget advice from the guys above. As they've all said, the upper range Squiers are all excellent. The real next step up from a Classic Vibe Jazz is the full on American Standard model at three-four times the cost.
17. Congrats! From my own 09 Am.Std.Jazz & the 08 Precision I sold last year, I know these basses are a really special thing to own. Not only are they great sounding players, but great to hold and behold as well. Excellent choice, Sir!
18. I was just thinking on the same lines... He's a great fun player to watch but is his bass as crap as the ones I looked at and played??
19.
I quite fancy a Status S2 5-string with side LEDs or perhaps a Streamline 5. I'm keeping an eye out but there is nothing around at the moment. Also would like to try a Sandberg PM5. It might just be what I need.
Make sure you try the PM Supreme model. I keep coming back to them. Lovely to play and they sound amazing. The perfect mix of classic and modern.
20.
I really fancy a Status, headless and with LEDs, it's the LED's that are doing it for me.
Sir, you are indeed a man of impeccable taste!
21. So, come on... It's not only what you're GAS-ing for, but what do you think is the uber-cool must have bass of the moment? For me, it's the Fiesta Red Roadworn Jazz. I don't like the idea of new relics, but there's just something about these...
22. If you're looking at Squiers, have a look at the Classic Vibe series basses. They're excellent
