Glad you're enjoying your Sadowsky, Rich You should have never sold me the cocobolo/phenowood Status, methinks!

Sandberg...?? anyone use them? want them?

Two I played recently stick in my mind... A Panther 5 I played was really nice & I was utterly bowled over by a 'supreme' edition California PM. One of the best sounding basses I've played in a long time. -

You usually see a lot of Westfield gear on ebay, but otherwise, have a look at the Westfield site and see if they list UK suppliers. These seem to be the ones closest to you... I tend to be quite ruthless in this respect - Anything that's not being played in a money-making context goes up for sale. Next item up for sale will be a virtually unused Barnes & Mullins 5-string banjo in a beautiful quality hardcase. £200, anyone?
-
Here's a couple more official pics of the revamped Streamline & the newly revamped Electro-4...
-
Definitely up for that - As long as I'm not booked to play, I'd love to make a weekend of it & bring the fleet down with me.

There are so many different versions, but mainly just try before you buy. The quality can be excellent, but there are some dogs out there. My personal favourite at the moment is the current American Standard Jazz with the through body stringing. No unwanted noises, great tone & lovely finish to the neck. And if you want more shove/sparkle, get either the Sadowsky outboard preamp or the Aguilar Tone Hammer. Best of all worlds there!

Btw, the above transcription is a simplified version of the bassline I've always played for 'Watermelon Man.' I'd never heard the original when I started playing it, so this is just my take on the song, but it fits really well. I still use it as well!
-
Same as playing, the more you do it, the easier it gets. I can usually do a take-down of a typical bassline in about 5 mins. The thing is to play along with the track a couple of times, then write the chord progression down as you listen to it a time or two after.

I seem to remember having a sheet music version somewhere that was in Bb, but I don't know what the original key is. If it is Bb, just move a couple of frets down from the C version. That'll sort it. This is the problem with standards, there are so many versions in so many different keys! I had to play 'Don't get around much anymore' last night in Db due to some girl singer only being able to do it in that key! Sorry if it's a bit scrawly - I just wrote it out and scanned it this evening! I find I can write music faster than I can input it into Sibelius Edit: Just listened to a couple of excerpts on iTunes of the Hancock versions. Seems he usually did it in F!
-
I've done it in both F & C versions - Hopefully you'll be able to move it around from there... My invoice is in the post, LOL!
-
Yes, just checked - The version in my pads is in F Major, but the original is in C Major. Which would you prefer, Andy?
-
Well, being as dirty bum sex definitely isn't in my agenda, I'll call in a favour at some time in the future We do it in F usually. Is that okay for you?
-
I'll do a bass part for you in the morning. Notation/fingering/positions only. That soon enough?
-
I had a new pupil come for a lesson for the first time this morning & he came armed with a black Bass Collection (p+j) 4-string licensed copy by SX which he purchased from ebay for the princely sum of £40! After I spent half an hour setting it up (the neck was bowed backwards and you could have flown an airliner under the strings!) it was a really playable, nice sounding bass. I haven't encountered any of the SX basses that so many of you wax lyrical about before, but I really liked this bass - Especially for the price my pupil paid! I'm beginning to see the attraction!

Factory visit to Chris Celinder's workshop, Copenhagen

Nice thread, Steve - I know the 'small child walking into the fantastic toyshop' feeling you get when you get when you visit your favourite luthier only too well! Is an order being placed soon? Excellent & informative report, btw. Definitely yet more food for thought! Rich. -
Don't worry about it - There's a lovely young lady on here who I sold a bass to recently. She's never made a post, either. Does that make her a criminal?
-
Love the stacked controls on the Fender. Seriously cool looking bass
Bridge looks like a Badass.
Agreed, Steve. Badass II by the looks of it.
-
Everytime i see your picture, I wish I could have your bass so much...mmmm...
Two grand and it's yours, mate Yeah, that bass has become the 'me' signature bass. Funny, that!
-
Yes, it's an old Matrix Series I. Looks like the volume & pickup pan controls have been replaced. That disc around the volume control looks like it's been added as a repair, rather like a lot of the brass plates you get around the jack input sockets on JayDees. Bridge is non-standard as well, I think. Thanks to the OP for costing me £8 btw... Never heard Lily before & I've just bought the album off iTunes since this little bit of research!

I've always preferred slimmer necks (fingers to thumb) so the Status necks & jazzes suit me just fine. The only ones I can't get along with are the thicker variety of Precisions & Warwicks. Narrowness of fingerboard doesn't seem to worry me at all across various instruments from 4-6 strings. But if the string spacing is too narrow at the bridge (less than 18-19mm) I find it hard right-hand-wise.
-
Wow - Congrats! I'd definitely pay the Status factory a visit, but apart from that you could have a look at a top end Alembic or Fodera. World's your oyster, really! I've noted from your previous posts that you like Sadowsky a lot, so why not go for one of the top of the range ones with the amazing sounding Norstrand pickups? Either that or you could buy 14 Classic Vibe Jazzes

Nice collection you have there - So you like Fenders, then?
