1. Best of luck with the sale, Rob. Sorry this one has to go mate. I know how much you like it. Rich.
2. Funnily enough, I started a thread on the basses forum the other evening asking whether anyone had ever been asked for the classic p bass sound. Personally I don't find the Status sound too modern. The basses are capable of massive tonal variation and for me, a Status running on both pickups with treble and bass boosted equally & the mid selector on flat sounds rounded, soulful and 'fruity'! I have other basses for more classic sounds as well, though. My jazz is fine for passive requirements and has serious bite & tone when plugged into the Sadowsky preamp. But at the end of the day nothing sounds like a Status
3. Iscolman, love that Empathy 5 - You don't see many of the 5's around these days. BassBus, your highly polished 1000 is looking really good - Still not quite as stunning as 'Miss Maple', though Sam, your KingBass is stunning! Are those Status or SIMS led's? Make sure the 16.5mm one you're looking at is even better than that one! Some fantastic basses tonight, guys. Thanks for sharing! Rich.
4.
I think Outtoplayjazz, if you can afford it a CIJ P bass (with the us pups) would do the trick for not much, my old one i sold sounded amazing straight into a DI. You never know you may grow to like it. Think of it as a historic version of a status, Like a status is a M16 and the P bass is a flintlock. They both do the same thing, just differently.
Thanks, I may look into that. First, I'll see how I go with my lovely Fender/Sadowsky jazz & the Status quintet. Lots of sounds to be had between that lot! I'm liking the gun analogy here - Does that make a Stingray an AK-47 assault rifle?
5. As far as I'm concerned, you're entirely on-topic Lovely looking deluxe you have there, btw.
6. That's really nice, Steve - Looks like quite an early S2-Classic. The all-black paint job really pronounces the two scooped creases either side of the monorail tuners as well. I'd never noticed them on the wooden-finish basses!
7. That phrase is absolutely true. Period. Nuff said!
8. How much is the butterscotch '51, fatstringsguy?
9. I have visions of someone mounting that in a tropical fish tank...
10. I have the digitech JamMan. It's excellent live & can even link up to your computer as a multi-track recording device. You can also loop vocals with the microphone plugin. I did a looped solo at a Christmas gig with mine & seeing the anticipation on the audience's faces as I added more notes to a sequence was real fun!
11. Just a late night thought... A while back I was chatting to another pro bass player who was saying that every serious session player should have a vintage Precision in their armoury. Now I know some producers ask for a "classic bass sound" and I've had others who've been very happy to let me play what I'm happy playing, but has anyone ever been expected to play a Precision or any other specific bass? I'm mainly just curious, as I've personally never got along with Precisions. I've tried to find P-love, but after buying and selling three I just find I don't get along with them & don't really like the sound. Now I've got a lot more session work coming in I'm wondering whether I should try again?
12. From the Lakland jazzes I've played, the Lakland seems a little lighter and feels slightly less substantial. Not to say that they're of lesser quality, though. They seem to nail the classic jazz sound very well. Very 60's sounding and perhaps a little warmer than the Fender which is very bright sounding. The string spacing on the JO4 version I played most recently was much narrower than the standard 19mm on a Fender. Apart from that, it's all down to personal preference, I think. Any Lakland experts out there who can give us some more ideas?
13. Nice, Martin! Book-matched stripy maple loveliness I can see why it's 'the one', mate!
14. I've always found that using a lot of gain on the amp (whatever amp you're using) tends to make the bass sound too harsh. I generally operate the total opposite of making anything "clip." I usually use only about 25% input gain and around 50% output volume. Basically twice the volume compared to the gain. That way the sound is always sweet and tonally pleasant & I never make anyone's PA clip.
15.
I can play any style of music with my Sadowsky and it sounds great. I have zero GAS for any other bass brand.
Stunning! Just like Tal's
16. Now I come to notice this thread again, I picked one up at Electro the other day - Yes, they weigh an absolute ton & the neck is seriously long. I didn't bother to play this particular one, as the action was several miles high!
17. Hi Paul, saw your thread on the 'porn' section the other evening. Nice work & welcome! Rich.
18.
Me too 50 and still at it!
Btw, lovely looking Sadowsky, Andy!
19. Not quite 40, so still a youngster compared to some of you. But look at my avatar - I must've had one hell of a paper round!
20. Nope. Never would. We live in too much of a throw-away society as it is - Not a good way of teaching the young to respect and take care of their instruments, is it?
21. Well, of the famous ones, probably Diana Krall, Judith Owen, Belinda Carlisle & Jane Weidlin. But my personal faves are one of the singers who works for me from time to time, Nicki Allan from Leeds (Have a listen to her at www.myspace.com/outtoplayjazz ) & Anita Wardell. Look up Anita on myspace or iTunes. Her scatting voice is something else! The bass player in both cases, from time to time has been me
22. Nice sounding jazz bass, Alan - I just previewed the album you mentioned on iTunes.
23.
You should have told me sooner, I've just finished sanding sunburst off of one of my basses, took me all morning. That neck looks fabulous OTPJ.
Thanks Wayne - Yes, it's just about the nicest wooden neck I've ever played, save for Molan's MTD. That one will take some beating!
24.
Maybe the MTD too
Noooo! You can't sell the MTD. That's the Barrie-Bass, that is! - Well, only to me
25. Congrats Barrie, glad you're all sorted now So all those Overwaters and Zon basses will be for sale soon, then? Good feeling, ain't it mate? Rich.
