1. I think it's down to people's favourite jazz sound - I like Tal Wilkenfeld's Sadowsky jazz sound, for instance. Have a listen to this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIFFRHBCPzA
2. I always used to prefer 4's & for fast technical playing still do, but I can't really vote on the poll, as these days I use 4, 5 & 6 almost equally. Different quantities of strings for different jobs. Rich.
3. I tried both on my S1 jazz. Quite the normal sound you'd expect on bridge only, but increased sustain & extra rich tone when strung through the body. Through body stringing saves you a fortune on BadAss bridges, too!
4. Hi Linus, I've had quite a few jazzes & the best quality one was the Japanese Marcus Miller signature by a country mile. The Lakland Skylines (especially the DJ's & JO's) feel a too lightweight & little insubstantial to me, but they are really nice basses to play. MartTheBass had a lovely DJ5 that won me over instantly. It nailed the classic jazz tone 110%. If I was spending my own money on a jazz I'd go for one of the 'super-jazzes' like a Sadowsky Metro in natural Ash with maple neck. Nice While I think of it, have a look at OHM's Lakland JO on the for sale pages. The Jo is another really nice bass - Quite narrow string spacing for a four-stringer, but surprisigly nice to play. Rich.
5. I put a set of Rotosound Jazz Bass 77's on my Hofner a while ago. Sounded and felt fabulous.
6. I've liked the feel and sound of every ATK I've played. The new ones are good, but see if you can find one of the original ATK's from the early 90's. They play like demons.
7. This is looking more like a possibility daily at the moment!
8. If the dimensions are the same, they should work fine...
9. I've been in talks with Alan for a while & I've chosen the woods - Just need to get the ball rolling now... Anyway, that's enough hijacking your sale thread - Best of luck with selling this lovely TRB
10.
Sorry, I should have been clearer with the model. Is it the newer TRB1006 basses that are Korean? Anyway, the back of the headstock says it was built in Japan. I've just been looking at Yamaha series numbers and I think I've decoded this one to reveal that the bass was made in May 1998. I'm pretty sure OutToPlayJazz has one of these basses, so I'm sure he could probably give you an unbiased opinion on them.
By all means These bolt-on Japanese TRB II's are stunning value for the prices they go at these days. I picked up mine a couple of years ago for the same price as playbass' instrument. For playability, there's nothing to touch these in the six string arena at the price. You can have everything from a Status-like hifi tone to deep dub bass sounds as well. Soloing on the top end is quite pleasurable, too. Making the transition from 4 or 5 to one of these is pretty easy due to the wide string spacing (as mentioned earlier in this thread.) Build quality is second to none & the ash body means the weight isn't too bad, either. These TRB's also feature twin trussrods, so there's never any movement in the neck whatsoever. Standard tuning is B E A D G C - Fourths across the board. I've been searching for a 'better' 6-string for the last year or so & I still haven't found anything to touch this bass and that includes a top of the range neck through headed Status S2 6er! I'm just on the verge of ordering an ACG Recurve Single-Cut 6...
11. Interesting story - Sorry you had to go through the mill to find out as well. It's true, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for!
12. That is a seriously nice looking Ray - Must resist... Must resist...
13. Looking forward to seeing that one, dangee Congrats!
14.
EQ hooligan I like that!
That's me! It's a fantastic sound on the right bass, though
15. My Warwick Triumph is very good for arco playing, but again, they're very expensive... As mentioned above, I don't think the Stagg is going to be good for that. One of my pupils has one & the strings really are close together & there's not much curvature to the bridge.
16. LED's flash on and off... click, click... click, click... click... click... We're coming to get you... We're coming to get you...
17. Hey Dirk, if I hadn't just bought my new Streamline I'd be ripping your arm off for this one! Best of luck with it... Rich.
18. It's a Japanese TRB-6 II.
19. Tanglewood do a nice electro-accoustic bass with a really deep body which sounds really thick for about £250-£300.
20. Nice review, Alex. Like you, I've found the Streamline not to be not only a great design, but a fantastic sounding bass - Possibly the best sounding of all the Status basses I've had - And also a great gigging companion which you can play almost effortlessly for hours on end. I bought my first Streamline on a whim to give the design a try & was instantly bowled over by the huge sound and playability. Rich.
21. Nice looking bass you have there - These are great basses & I've liked every ATK I've played. Best of luck with the sale
22. Lovely looking setup - I have several friends who swear by Aguilar gear. Must try some sometime.
23. In the red recycling bin - That's where all the other useless plastic goes!
