I have to get a fender and I dont like them Dohhh
OutToPlayJazz replied to grimbeaver's topic in Bass Guitars
I've been down the authenticity route myself and ended up with some admittedly quite good basses that I really didn't like - All of which have since been sold on. With my latest project, I've stuck to my guns & played the basses I like playing & love the sound of. End of. -
I've played a few Wals, too. Last one I played was in the summer at a BCer's place. I actually went to look at a JayDee (that I didn't end up buying), but was most intrigued by a lovely Wal he had. I liked the filter preamp a lot. So many sounds - Yes, it wasn't quite as hifi as my basses, but it did have an array of very pleasing sounds. I think I'd like one at some point, but wouldn't go out of my way to sell any of my gear to get at one. The prices are mainly (as others have said) due to the rarity of Wals. Yes, there's always one or two knocking around for sale, but the fact that the company owner is no longer medically able to build the instruments that many people love to play/own has pushed the prices skywards.

Love that flamed maple, red stain Euro! Stunning Is that the one you installed the ACG pre into? Rich.

Hey Alan, many people have the same problem with the KingBass I. I had a lovely 5-string through neck one made for me in 2006 & ended up selling it for the very same reason. Then I tried again with a near identical 4-string build in the same woods last year. Both sold on. At least the S2-Classic & Streamline fit me like proverbial gloves!

Electro Music in Doncaster have two in stock. One of the cheaper ones in black & the full Artist model in flamed maple.

BRX, I see you mentioned the White Rooms - Are they still running? I used to go there to teach on a Saturday morning many years ago & actually taught the original owner's (Steve White) daughters violin & piano. -
Do you own the most expensive bass on Basschat

My electric basses are quite reasonable... Status S2-Classic Walnut - £1750 Status S2-Classic 5 Myrtlewood - £1925 Status S2-Classic 5 b/o Cocobolo - £1700 Status SII cocobolo - £1000 Status Streamline £1000 Status Groove 5 - £260 Yamaha TRB-6 II - £450 Warwick Triumph EUB - £1600 But they're nothing compared to the insurance values of my clssical instruments. German 4/4 Double Bass c.1880 £10,000 Ronald Prentice violin-shouldered Double Bass #1 (1974) with C-extension £22,000 Ioah Luca Cello 1979 #3 - £10,000 Frank Penny violin (1948) - £2,500 But at the end of the day, it's all numbers. As long as they're working instruments that earn me a living, I don't worry about the numbers -
First official pic of the newly released Streamline 5...

Wow! That was supremely cheap, Steve! Welcome to the 'club'...

It's Ashdown's take on the Status T-Bass (with an almost exact copy of Rob Green's ergonomic tuning system). I've played a couple of these at a friend's store & I'd say don't bother... The basses themselves are made beautifully & the fittings/finish are excellent. The sound is horrendously harsh, though. Sounds like a bass relying too much on the preamp, as opposed to the woods. Try one, may sound different to your ears, but I hated it! You'd be better off spending a couple of hundred quid more and getting the real thing from Status. Their new graphite-necked T-Bass is excellent - I've played that as well. Rich.

Anyone coming close to the Humber Bridge is welcome to try mine (by prior apppointment, of course!)

Yes, the 5-string Streamline is on it's way this year. I was at the factory when Rob & Gerry were programming the mould for the 5-stringer late last year. Rich.

Good job I don't watch tv then, really! I may bump into another 'me' lookalike, LOL!

When I went to pick up my 2008 Am.Std.Precision last summer, they fortunately had two identical 3ts/maple ones arrive at the same time. The first one I tried had a nasty dull and brittle large patch of reacted lacquer on the back & weighed (for some reason) significantly more than the other one. So I was lucky enough to be able to choose between two basses at the time, but it shows that there are still quality control issues at Fender. The try before you buy mantle applies as ever. But as Peter said, there really are so many much better alternatives to buy over a Fender if you want a jazz style bass. Have a look for a used Sadowsky Metro & you'll never look at a Fender again. Same goes for Mike Lull jazzes & so many others. Rich.

As a classical cellist & double bass player, I went straight for finger style at the beginning. I tried some pick stuff but it never suited me, I never found the accuracy & I hated the sound. Horses for courses

Lovely looking bass, UB

Nice looking setup, Stan!
cheers rich..the pictures don't realy do it justice.....think the one on the status site is a silver one.
Yes, I forgot yours had a blue tint to it, Al Embic Here's some recent promo pics from Blondie UK. Ignore the fat bloke. The bass is the important bit
-
Sounds like you either have a loose wire on the bass somewhere or there's a blown capacitor on the preamp. Take the control cover plate off the back & just see if anything's not attached properly. Otherwise, you need Rob Green at Status. He's the only one who can sort those preamps properly. Rich.
-
Wow! Your luthier did an utterly stunning job on that I've always liked how Wals play, but the finishes have always lacked something for me. Yours is definitely the exception to the rule! Rich.

As usual with these things, it's entirely subjective to our individual ears & down to several factors as goes equipment. 1. The bass is a big thing... I love the sound of my Status through-necked instruments. There's a huge low end growl (from the graphite through neck & phelonic fingerboard) along with creamy tone (probably from the tone block) and serious top end. My sound is like the old smiley-face graphic setting. Loads of treble & bass, and mids in the middle. Very scooped sound, but cuts through the mix with no trouble at all. 2. The amp. I like to run a lot more treble than bass. I have my bass settings on about 2 o'clock & my treble full on. That means I get full use of the twin hf horn units I'm running on the MarkBass & a full, rich bass frequency as well. 3. Playing style - I can either play gently & get the full tonal experience or dig in for that hard, graphite twang. Rich
-
LOL! No, I always use the 30-90's on my Status basses - Makes them furiously fast to play, but with no loss of tone at all.

As I said in the other thread, that's a stunner, Steve! Congrats
