1.
This is entirely subjective. I've owned 4 Statii over a period of years and have found they do it for me less than any other basses I've owned. I love the necks but for me they've just sounded all wrong (and I won't get onto the ergonomics). Tried a couple in the Gallery the other week to see if it was still true and it was even more so.
That's interesting - Perhaps it's your ears? Or perhaps a different style sounding amplifier you use? I have to admit that when I took some basses to Barrie's [molan's] house a few weeks back, my Groove 5 sounded absolutely awful through his valve rig. I was actually worried I'd bought a clonker, but it sounded totally different [and a lot better] through all of my gear when I got home. Rich.
2. If I didn't already have one of these - And I love it! - I'd have this off you in an instant! best of luck with the sale Rich.
3.
we dont all use the same pre amps, amplifiers, speakers etc or even play the same way better or best takes a lot of quantification sonically better criteria are build, finish and playability...but then we dont all have the same hands
Absolutely. I played my Groove 5 through molan's (Barrie's) valve setup and it sounded absolutely horrendous! But when I got home I plugged it into the basscube (and later the MarkBass) & it sounded fantastic! And yes, we all play differently. I do find more and more that my signature style of playing is audible through whatever I'm playing. Rich.
4. Hi Paul, you have some really individual designs there. All you need now is a ProseBass logo for the headstocks. Best of luck! Rich.
5. Basically, anything will slap within reason. Just avoid cheaper Precision copies (too much bang when you slap with the split coil pickup) and basses with a pickup right against the base of the neck (eg., Epiphone EB's and violin basses). Jazz basses & instruments with soapbars are good for slap. Active ciruitry is preferable but not neccessary. Also, make sure you have clean zingy strings & more treble than bass set on your amp. Slap heaven! Thinking about your price range, try the new Ibanez SR300. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=75470 Rich.
6. Mewsie's got my Status Groove 5 on loan and one of the first things she said was that it was so bright sounding and punchy compared to her Sterling. Once you're used to the feel, response & sound of graphite, wood just doesn't seem to cut it anymore. The only wooden basses I've found recently that I really like the sound of have been my two Corvette $$'s, my current and long standing Yamaha TRB-6 II & a couple of Sadowskys. I will say though, that every MusicMan bass bar one that I've played has underwhelmed me as well. Rich. *Waits for MusicMan bearing lynch mob to storm the place*, LOL!
7. I played this bass while Barrie had it. It's got that "jazz sound you always dreamed of" quality to it. An excellent instrument. Rich.
8. Sounds like you want your old Status back, mate Rich.
9. I like the original "Jaco Pastorius" solo album, as it really is a landmark recording and one from which we can all learn a lot. (If we open our ears & minds!) But the later more experimental stuff is a move too far for me. I love the bass as a solo instrument & as I've said in the past, the top soloists inspire me to be a better player, as I'm sure many others on here will also find.
10. Yes, the TRB-6 II is a heavy mother of a bass. Ash bodied instruments do tend to have a lot of weight to them. I found the same with my Marcus Miller jazz. Strangely though, both of my Corvette $$'s were quite light to say they were ash as well. I think after the hifi sound of the Yamaha, you'll find the Streamer quite dull sounding, though. Rich.
11. I first played an Overwater "Oringinal" as BRX calls it in the late 80's when I was a student. Still possibly one of the best basses I've ever played. Rich.
12. Lovely looking bass you have there, ARGH
13.
These 5000 series meant to be any good?

Ehm, they were made by Status!!!
Obvious reply.... Do bears s**t in the woods? Is the Pope catholic? Does Ghandi wear flipflops? Does the aforementioned Ghandi have footrot? Etc, etc, etc...
14. This one... I've never found anything else so playable with such fantastic tone, growl & punch. Sublime. The new 5-string & the Streamline run it a close joint second, but it's difficult to imagine anything better than this one. Rich.
15.
PS. I bet Rob Green would still make an Electro if you asked nicely and opened your wallet.
They still make it as the Electro 3. Just been revised with the single soapbar (as well as the piezo) having been moved from the bridge position, closer to the neck. Nice looking things, now all with graphite necks, of course. Rich.
16. I had a 32" (with bendwell) KingBass 5-string for a while. Definitely no lack of tension in the strings on that one. Status also do a 6-string version with the same neck.
17. The higher range swamp ash Sterling Rays look nice. Not sure what the difference is going to be between these and a £1000 MM, though. Probably about £300 by all accounts
18. It's an Arpege fretless. Lovely colour as well. Cool sound. Is he using an octaver or something? It's got a real quality thud on that back pickup as well, although some of that could be some of the typical over-engineered 80's sound Rich.
19. The cheapest Electros go for about £300 these days for the early one. Molan (Barrie) just sold one, but I think BigBeatNut has a five stringer he's been interested in shifting for a while.
20. The sack? I'd go for both! Yes, I hope TW is on the tour. She's well worth seeing live. Awesome player.
21. The B2 looks awesome, but the hat reigns supreme
22.
Whats the pay?
Admittedly, that was my first thought. If you're a musician on the payroll, you turn up on time, play the gig, get paid and go home. End of story. I get paid thousands of pounds a year to play music I loathe. You just have to keep your mouth shut and take the money... I quite like the Stevie Wonder lines, but you can always funk them up a little more and put your own signature on them. Music doesn't have to be the same as the record. It's you playing the track, not the original recording bass player Rich.
