1.
More often than not, it's a good player that makes for a good bass sound. I've heard Peavy Milestone's that sounded great in the hands of a good player. They can equally sound s**t, so it sort of swings in roundabouts.
Equally, a decent amp can also be a bigger factor. We've all been in situations where we've had to plug our zillion dollar basses into 5 cents worth of amplifier! Those who have mentioned the latest Squiers and Fender clones should also consider a Sadowsky outboard preamp before swapping out pickups, etc. Mine sounds huge!
2. I have mine pretty high - So I can make sure my thumb stays behind the neck & my wrist coming from below the neck, rather than from behind it.
3. Status. Especially the older ones. Almost oblong in profile & amazingly comfortable to play for hours on end.
4.
Brother!!!!!! I cans't believe thy words! Thee prefereth the bass of `T' over the saucy MkII!!!! Hmm! Prepare to be severely punished! Hehe!
You are right, oh broither of the holy order - I shall go and flagilate myself hence forth in the name of the Bass Gods & the Greens! I still want a T-Bass, though!
5.
arent graphite necks a bit cold in tone
Nope, not cold, just a little more clinical. As Kiwi said, a lot depends on the wood selected for the body. Get the body right & it'll compliment the sound of the graphite neck. Once you've gone graphite, wood makes a lot less sense if you're a regular working player. Rich.
6. That's a nice example. Best of luck with the sale! Rich.
7.
Rich - do you have any pix of yours yet? Cheers! Nick
Only had the chance to pick it up today, so I'll try and do a couple this evening. In the words of the Holy Grail... It's'a very-niiice! Rich.
8. Wow! It really is erb night on here, isn't it? Congrats mate! Lovely looking thing What with this and the ACG 9 on the other thread, I'm feeling rather inadequately strung this evening, LOL! Rich.
9. Again, as a sixer I could cope with this, but it has three strings too many for me to handle Lovely looking bass, though. Stunning woods as well. Congrats! Rich.
10. I've bought the 60's Precision, but got a good chance to play the 50's model as well. It sounds just as good as it's Japanese counterpart & the build quality on all these Chinese made Vibes is excellent. The neck on the one I played was gorgeous flamed maple (with flaming around the circumfrence) and the most lustrous high gloss lacquer I've seen on a wooden neck in ages. The 50's neck also has the true original wide circumfrence neck, so it feels chunky like it should, whereas the 60's model has the thinner more modern [almost jazz-like] neck. I've got the jazz on order at Electro so we'll see what that one comes out like, too. As my brother Nick (DOTB) says, these are so nice it'd be great to have the whole set of three at this money! Rich.
11.
I like the look of those graphite necked T basses
And quite rightly so. I've played the flamed maple one with the pearloid guard a couple of times now & it's amazing to both hear & play. I actually preferred it to the King Bass Mk-II!!!
12.
Great tone! They sound like dead-ish rounds to me.. not flats.
I was thinking the same. Not very new rounds. Typical p-bass sound with the tone full up.
13. Have a listen to Andy Pile's playing on Gary Moore's Blues Alive album. That's about as much as you'll [or everyone else will] want to be doing in a blues band. Easy life! LOL If you read notation I can do you the two/three architypal blues bass lines. It's just sitting on the roots, lots of chromatic fills and the obvious fills with thirds & octaves. Rich.
14. If I can manage to get there I'll bring... Status S2 4-string x 2 Status S2 5-string x 2 Status Streamline Yamaha TRB-6 II Squier Classic Vibe 60's Precision Warwick Triumph EUB MarkBass rig I would bring the Groove 5, but I've loaned it to Mewsie, who's fallen in love with it! I'll have only just finished a week's show so I'll be knackered, but will try and make the effort Rich.
15. Forgot to mention in an earlier post that I also highly recommend the Yamaha BB614 & the Ibanez SR300. Both excellent basses fo the money! Rich.
16. Sounds like the neck is too curved. Most jazz basses seem to work best with just a touch of relief towards the tuning end. The neck profile can also change if you've changed the string guages at all. Always surprises me how much difference it makes on a wooden neck. Rich.
17. LOL! Nah, I see her quite regularly, so it'll be fine mate. She really likes it, too.
18. I hope the original poster [guitrax] has taken due note that he's enquiring about some seriously good gear! Mewsie came round for a quick lesson last night & she got to try the a couple of S2's as well. She even ended up taking the Groove 5 with her. She's borrowing it for a while!
19. Now that's a serious piece of bass! I love singlecuts, too! Congrats on an amazing build
20. That's a tricky one... It'll be something special like a Jaydee, Status or Alembic. Rich. Edit: Either that or a very short & thin internet mail-order bride!
21.
Oh just ignore what everyone has said here and buy one. Nothing better. Perfection personified. Simply the best. The dogs spherical objects. Any other cliches that come to mind.
Well said, that man! To take the cliche several stages further, I'd say they're not just the dog's danglies, but in fact the whole dog, his mother, father & entire genetic lineage as well!
22. I played a brand new 'real' Gibson T-Bird the other week at Electro in Doncaster. Yes, okay, we all know they have the neck dive issue, but I can honestly tell you that it outplayed every other bass in the place. (And we're talking Warwicks, Sandbergs, etc, etc.) Awesome feel, sound, playability. If I'd have had a spare grand knocking about I'd have bought it there and then! Rich.
23.
+1(still not bought one yet tho)if these had been out a year ago i would have saved myself loadsa money ! the cv jazz is as good as my fender imo.
Yes, I'm hopefully looking at the jazz this weekend if Dave's got it in for me at Electro. Rich.
