Best online Bass lessons - SBL, Talking Bass?
PatrickJ replied to Chrisbassboy5's topic in General Discussion
⁷With SBL you get what you pay for. The free stuff can be interesting but the newer YouTube content is much less educational and more around promoting the SBL brand and driving people to paid content, I.e the academy or the newer stand alone courses. I'm a paid up SBL academy member, I'd recommend the free trial to see what your think. The website has been updated significantly over the past 12 months, content is much easier to find and filter to what is of interest / focus. The lessons are direct and there are a variety of course creators, not just Scott. I think the quality of material is pretty good. I've just watched the video @devinebassshot in response to a recent thread on here, there's some good information in there about the academy and why his YT content has gone the way it has. It's an interesting watch. I've tried content from other Online educators and I tend to not find them as engaging as Scott so I always end up back at the SBL - but I haven't tried their paid content so it's probably not a fair comparison. I should check out Talkingbass more thoroughly. -
A few ideas from similar stuff I've played with a Pub Covers esque band... Biffy Clyo - Who's Got a Match Green Day - Basket Case, Longview etc. Feeder - Just a Day , I'm pretty sure they are a trio but may tour with more members. Muse - Time Is Running Out Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World Sublime - What I Got

Finger noise drove me nuts. A certain amount is inevitable with round wound strings, especially steels. As previously mentioned it largely gets lost in the mix of a full band setting but I hated it when playing on my own. I switched to flat wounds, Ernie Ball Cobalts to be precise which still retain a certain amount of the round wound sound with reduced noise. D'Addario Chromes are another option for flats that still retain a brightness. Coated round wounds may be another option. I think Elixr do them, Nano web coating I think it's called?? Worth investigating too. Other than that, practice practice practice.

I find this too. One of the singers of the band I play with favours 80's pop so we always have a few of her songs in a set list. Nothing I'd considering listening to by choice, but damn her choices have the most fun bass lines to play : especially compared to SO69, You Really Got Me, Teenage Kicks, bad moon rising etc etc

I was expecting to read a list of songs in line of : Summer of 69, Livin' on a Prayer, Sweet Child, Teenage Kicks, You've Really Got Me (where the guitarists taps van Galen style for the solo)... Sadly 90% of those are included in my bands set list .. I wouldn't have a problem with those you mention although they don't naturally sit in indie covers set list

Where do people get their strings from? Where is good?
PatrickJ replied to shoulderpet's topic in Accessories and Misc
I normally use Stringsdirect or Amazon. SD aren't the cheapest, though I don't think of them as particularly expensive. Their customer service is excellent though, one of the few online retailers who pretty consistently get it right . -
So, just how many basses do you own ????
PatrickJ replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
What is the combined value of that collection and where the hell do you store them all ????!!!!! -
I've a couple of Heistercamp straps. Handmade in Devon https://www.heistercamp.co.uk

Well I just assumed you'd be the one holding the Bass Guitar

When you playing there? It's not too far from me, I might pop in!

Chad was by far the stand out performance. I only got to watch the first 20 mins or so but he was excellent. Agreed, vocally it was appalling. In every live performance I've seen Kiedis sounds awful and Josh's harmonies were equally terrible. I've never seen them live but I don't think I would ever rush out to do so. Much better listening to the recorded versions.

A bad workman and all that, but my current soldering iron is a bit crap. I need to fix a few issues with the pre / pots in my Fender active bass and figured I may as well get a better iron to do the work with. Any recommendations?

I was just thinking this - drug offences, violence and even murder barely get a second thought, in fact there is a whole genre of music that very often glamourises these crimes.

Anyone else watching the live stream from Egypt?

New Mesa Walkabout-style high powered amp WD-800....and new cabs...
PatrickJ replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
@agedhorse i think to solve this issue you need to get the folks at MESA to agree to providing basschatters with a £300 cashback reward for every new WD-800 purchase. -
This is a very interesting thread. There were a few MJ bass lines on my to learn list. Now the bassist and producers are who performed and recorded those parts are not guilty of anything other than being associated to the man. I dont beliebe MJ did much of the composition work, however I still find myself thinking its probably in poor taste to learn them now, let alone think about performing them.

Are Band helper and Set list helper the best options for Android? It looks like OnSong and Deep dish are IOS only . I decided at last night's rehearsal that I definitely have to get something like this, even if just for me !

New Mesa Walkabout-style high powered amp WD-800....and new cabs...
PatrickJ replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
I don't think it can be the retailer? I doubt they make that much margin on these products. Perhaps it's the distributor for Mesa in Europe who is setting the pricing? Its a shame, I'd love a MESA rig but, even though I could probably stretch to afford one, as LukeRFC pointed out there are so many other quality options at lower price points it's really hard to justify. Maybe after Brexit we'll agree a trade deal with the US and prices will tumble down -
Read this and thought, Scott Devine. I think Scott is a good educator but his YT channel is click bait of the worst kind. Though I'm not sure he's guilty of the last one!

I used a set of Sunbeams for a short period of time. I liked them and wouldn't hesitate using them again if I went back to round wounds. I just checked Amazon.co.uk as i remembered they were inexpensive and the 40-100 gauge are currently selling for less than £20(dispatched from the US).

Great picture - looks like a real blast. I don't know Stray but I'm to give them a listen this afternoon.
