You have desperate Gas? But what do you want!?
bassatnight replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
Nice sentiment and possibly better aimed at someone less fortunate. I will have some £80k once the house sale goes through and we are now renting for the forseeable so afford it I certainly can; I don't envisage paying more than two payments on the old HP before clearing it.
Sorry, probably not what you want to hear, but spending money you don't have on stuff you don't need is a mug's game, imho.
-
I thought John was probably the wrong choice for replacing Derek Forbes in Simple Minds during 1985 as his playing was a little more technical? Forbes was all about power and rolling Fender P bass lines John a little more subtle? Also Kate Bush can pick her bassists she also used Youth (Killingjoke) and Mick Karn

Fellow Basschatters, I have over the last six months gone from 8 basses down to just the one a mint 1981 Aria SB1000 which I will never part with but like all of us at some point or another the old finances were stretched and I needed to recoup some money urgently due to redundancy and a 150 mile house move. I cannot tell how heartbroken I was to see the following leave my possesion: Fender American P Black/Maple Fender American Jazz Sunburst/Rosewood Sandberg JM Natural Status Graphite Fretless Aria SB700 Natural Aria SB1000 Paduk Westone Thunder 3 Fretless I am now happily working again and settling fast into the new area (Ely) but I have serious Bass withdrawls but only limited funds until the old house sells so I have decided to purchase a high end instrument on the old hire purchase until the house gets sold. My problem is what to get, ideally I want to get to a situation where I have managed to get a nice Fender P, a Jazz, Stingray and a decent fretless but not sure what to get first, I have gone from just getting one of the new classic series Squires to tide me over to a £1200 Ray, P or Jazz. Anyone else been in this position where you know 'roughly' what you want but can only afford just the one for now but which to get first!? arrghh!! Steve.

Lakland DJ Vs Fender USA Deluxe 2010 Jazz
bassatnight replied to bassatnight's topic in Bass Guitars
I have thought the price was a little too high, but then American Deluxe is going to set me back £1250. I am even thinking about a stingray but want the all black with maple neck and matching headstock I have only seen HS models in that finish or the limited edition from a few year back. -
Chaps, I am about to order a new Bass and have managed to get the choice down to a Natural Lakland Skyline DJ for £1,100 or a new Black Fender Deluxe Jazz 2010 with the block inlays. I have played the DJ and its lovely really nice range of warm tones nice and light and of course looks the business, the natural finish seems a bit rarer than the more common blue. I also understand they have stopped making them now so might keep its value? I have not played the new Jazzes so apart from watching clips on you tube and of course going by previous Jazzes I have owned I am fairly confident it will be a cracking bass, but I just can't decide between the two. Anyone got a view?

I used to own a Musicman that used to below to Martin Kemp of the 80's popsters Spandau Ballet (according to the shop in St Albans I got it from), apprently its the one seen in their first video. I sold it for £350 in 1990. what a Tw$T!

I am amazed that Wal haven't made some kind of gesture towards mick even if its a signature model with a percentage going to Mick directly. I really believe his playing shifted these basses through the 80's, I have lost count of how many players on here name Mick as a major influence a more natural player I have yet to see! Come on Wal lets see some kind of gesture.

Folks, I have managed to pull together just over £500 towards a new Stingray, however I am running out of patience and having recently tried out one of the new Sterling Ray 34's I was very impressed at the closeness to the more expensive big brother and am now wondering if I should go for a lovely all black 34 model with the matching head I am hankering for which I pretty much have the dosh for right now or wait another few months for a new full on Ray, or perhaps dip into the second hand market for one now. My dream is for the 2006(?) special edition in all black with gold trim but they rarely come onto the market. Any Musicman experts out there care to offer some advice?

I have been playing the bass for some 25 years and these days due to my old age can afford higher end instruments like Sadowsky's and American Fenders but having recently bought a classic vibe P for my 11 year old son I was blown away at the high quality the new wave of Squiers are excellent and much more than just a budget intro buy that they once were. I seriously think that these basses give not only the Mexican standards a run for thier money but also if set-up well the standard American versions, sadly their is a lot of Bass snobbery about the squier models even today people even go to the extent of losing the Squier decals, all very sad. These are great basses and for me no longer a bargain basement poorly made instrument. The new ones look good too, might even invest in the 77 all black VM jazz that is being released next month and I will be proud to have it along side my grand plus basses!

Hi, Thanks for answering the question for me. To be honest I can't recall if its branded or not, I think it is, but I am not 100% sure as I am away from home this week so cannot check. I can confirm this question on Thursday when I return home; if you can wait that long, I can confirm that it is the original case and it still has tags with it from 1981. I am afraid the original tool kit has long gone. -

Aria Pro II SB700 in golden oak. This is identical to the SB1000 but the SB700 is a passive bass and lacks the active circuitry. It is a very playable bass and has the neck thru design of the best Aria SB's. On the plus side, it is quite a bit lighter than the SB1000. The bass is a 1981 model and comes complete with signed registration card signed by Johnny Joyce of Gigsville, who used to be the distributors for Aria back in the 80's. The bass will also come with the original shaped hard case. The bass is 29 years old and still plays fantastic with all the original electrics working and original knobs and switch. There are a few small surface marks consistent with a bass of this age and a small ding to the bottom edge of the body but nothing drastic. The frets are a little worn but as I say it is 29 years old. For its age is pretty much mint. The bass is currently stringed with Rotosound unsilked nickel strings. The pictures do not do her justice, she is a very warm golden colour unlike the more plain Oak finishes I have seen in the past. I really want to keep this but cash flow following my recent move up country mean she has to go. I am looking for £500 plus shipping. UK sale only. Cheers for looking. Pictured with her sister who is not for sale...

Fair play mate. Hats off to you for such a generous gesture. I have just donated.
I've put my personal bass for sale to help Mick. I'll see if the mods will allow me to post it in the "For sale" section since I'm not going to gain money on it (I'd give away 100% of the sale price).
Mick along with Steve Jansen and Richard Barberi made very little from Japan; David Sylvian did very well taking most of the money and plaudits (as per Micks Biog) Lets be honest he has all but vanished from the music scene in the last 25 years. This is so sad as I grew up listening and trying to copy his style, I wonder if his former band mates will have rally round? Wal certainly sold a lot of fretless basses due to him. I have mixed feelings over this, on the one hand you want to help - but thousands of other sufferers get no financial help bar the NHS (and we know how bad that can be) the last I heard Mick had upped sticks abroad a few years back so no doubt the NHS will frown at that too.. So so sad...
