..and killed every speaker in my much loved old gallien kruger 2x10s...so much for tranny heads being more reliable than valve.. still got the cabs, can anyone recomend/supply some good replacement speakers? considerations are 1) want to be able to use just one cab as a half stack at acoustic gigs and some of the small pubs we play in peterborough(lugging the mesa boogie cab into them venues is overkill and then some) 2) cabs must be 4ohms each (2 ohms paired)as have got an SVT which will only run at 4 or 2 ohms 3) some heavy chassis speakers wont fit into the openings as they are quite close together(will take photos got some cheapies in both cabs presently as i been using them as practice cabs for last two years, one at home and one at the drummers house, but i dont think they would handle the ampeg and gig volumes. was thinking of saving myself time and energy and just buying some of the cheap 1 x15s that come up on here but there always millions of miles away :-) btw i was glad when that amp died, it always sounded bloody horrible, just wish it hadnt taken me GKs with it lol
Cetera's old one - best full-range cab ever IMO, happy doing modern hi-fi or old school thump, and can bi-amp it too. Even fits cross-wise in the boot of my Modeo estate without putting the seats down, but pretty sure a solid month of gigging with it thru December gave me elbow tendonitis!
thanks guys lol..yup black grille.. cream mesa boogie badge...sounds fantastic.. heavy as a house...thats my baby..:-) mines flightcased as well(h duty packhorse with big castors), and as im the one with the van i get to lift it in and out on my own every weekend along with the SVT..one day i'll bust me farting clappers i just know it..

anybody know, am i right in thinking my Ev loaded 4x10 is what they called a "diesel" cab? and does anybody know when mesa engineering stopped using Ev speakers?

lol i had a 1450 fatboy for a year, but missed corners and roundabouts too much....even had my own bastardized Ogri plate onnit saddo that i amm...funny how we all yearned to have a "fatboy", but steered well clear of a "badboy", harley didnt quite get that one right lol..issit true the fatboy was named after the bomb the yanks dropped on hiroshima?(the idea being a parallell to the USA decimating jap bike sales with their bike) seems a bit of a norty by willie g if so...
Dunno about you lot, but ogri looks a hard bastard to me. When it all kicks off over Jazz or Jesus next time, I want him on my side. He'll knock 'em out, I'll lay the cowardly boot in.
buddy your confusing "looking hard" with "looking ugly, old and f*cked", courtesy of still doing this for a living at 49 years old..its an easy mistake to make
Thank you, that would be cool. I did actually try one when I was looking for basses and I thought it sounded amazing. Really nice angry Fender sound. Very impressed.
the offers there my friend. lurvvve the black jazz incidently. and as much as i really like me new 'un, my jazz(with just the neck pick up turned up which is how i only ever use it) will always be my favourite bass, both for playability and sound. it does feel damn cool playing a tele though, dunno why, it just really does..

What was your first bass and why did you start playing?
ogri replied to damo200sx's topic in Bass Guitars
my first was a ricky copy, in 1976,a cml i think, from a club book (ask your mum/dad) . it was godawful. my second was also from a club book, but it was great, a westone thunder 1A. the 18v active circuitry made up for my crappy backline, andi was hooked on getting a good bass thump for ever. i started playing at 16 for the noblest of reasons, that girls would hopefully let me "tit them up" in the bike sheds at the back of ramsey youth club. a boy can dream... -
lol..blokes..have had the nickname ogri many years now, cant think why, he's such an ugly bugger an im so pretty... mitzi is still about, we got a house together eventually, thats when it went tits up, now we are only in touch by cheque( the reason i only run one bike nowadays) but thats real life for ya.. gixxer thous an old triumphs both rock in their own particular ways, nice one dudes
i used solid state amps for about the first year of playing when i got a bit cash i decided to go buy a new amp. i tried a ampeg b2re and hated it took it back to the shop after 2 days. moved onto a ashdown abm and again hated it. so i ended out splashing out on a marshall vba 400 with 4x12 cab and have never looked back. sound is absoloutly amazing imo valves rock
my fifty pence worth.. ive had an all valve ampeg svt classic for nine years now, and have learnt a couple of lessons i will gladly pass on based on my own experience. 1) buy something with a good established rep, do whatever you have to do to find the money..(i had to sell a bleeding motorbike!! for a bloody bass amp!!) 2) find a really, really good valve tech who will do your servicing and repairs, someone who genuinly knows what they are doing, and only ever let him touch it, and whatever he suggests let him do. 3) buy a good quality well padded flight case, made slightly higher internally so you keep a spare amp base shaped square of foam on top of it inside the cab, and take that out and put it on your cab before sitting the amp down onnit at gigs, to stop the cab vibes transmuting to your valves(dunno if thats a word or not but i like it ) err, thats about it i think. my amp is trouble free, gets as hot as hell at some of the venues we play and gets used every weekend, hard. it always provokes comment on how good it sounds, though the ev loaded 4x10 mesa cab is a big part of that too. i'd like to think it will be the only amp i ever play for the rest of my life, though the weight, especially flight cased, is immense. and the last time i saw colin hodgkinson, even he had given in and was using a markbass... one last thing, ive only had to have a total revalve twice now, but both times using decent matched valves it required a second mortgage.. enjoy..
Apart from the original, which I have owned one and sold on, which of the four models is the best? In fact, is there any difference in the three models in terms of quality, tone, playability etc. The four I am thinking of are, 1. 1990's Japanese Fender re-issue 2. Current 51' Japanese re-issue 3. Sting Signature 4. Mike Dirnt Signature Apart from the obvious like slab body, rosewood neck, pickup configuration, sting inlay on the various models, Is there really much in it between the four models? Any thoughts on any differences or which ones to avoid or go for would be really appreciated.
i would love to vote for my obvious choice buddy, but as i havnt played the other three i a unqualified to comment really..however if you live anywhere near me your welcome to try my tv yellow beauty (It is so NOT vintage white lol) for a gig and see what you think..
i'd love a markbass rig they make a lotta sense, but im stuck in my ways and adore me ampeg/boogie rig lol. besides playing bass to a neanderthal like me is like building or shagging, if you wanna knock a big nail in you need a big hammer.. gawd, im glad i dont ever have to back that one up on here......
ha ha ha at least you are down to earth and have a sense of humour......... What's it like working for a mag then? Who else do you journo for?
only them buddy. i got the gig three years back, EMAP (now Baur) are based at peterborough and use the same local tuning guru(mark brewin bsd) as i do. they had a big test coming up, hayabusa, blackbird, zx12r and the new fast beemer thrapping around the isle of man for a week, needed a fourth rider, asked mark if he knew anyone the criteria being 1) wont fall off 2) can keep up 3) knows loads of dirty jokes naturally, lol, he put me forward after that, i got called in everytime they were short, or needed a sort of "real world rider" test, the highlights being the nurburgring on all the sports thou's and the then new 1098 ducati, and best of all, calais to north africa, on my own, on a new zzr1400, in twenty four hours.. by the time i was on the ferry to morrocco 24 hours after leaving the hotel in calais i was buzzing so much that even after riding 1500 miles non stop i did another 500..that was a proper old adventure that was the job is fantastic, its just a shame i dont do it all the time, but there you go. i get paid well, but the best perk... it costs manufacturers two grand for a half page advert in "bike"..so instead of that they give the road testers there gear as its free advertising for them! have got leathers, winter suits, heated gear, helmets, boots etc all gratis..my favourite freebies being my lovely orange/black retro helston jacket and the black arai viper i got on the last job.
Hello - I am new as well but enjoying the forum loads.... Yep, impressed...........not just riding but road testing........you going to tell me you got all your own hair as well aren't you??
buddy, dont be too impressed, i freelance road test fairly infrequently (am in it this months daylight robbery feature but probably only do six issues/tests a year or so) ..and yes i do have my own hair, though its going verrrry grey now, and along with my ageing labrador, two basses and cb1300 is just about all i do have..
Hallo Paul! That actual bass is perhaps the best Precision I've ever played - I set it up for Al, the previous owner and it plays like butter! The tone is articulate and powerful, almost verging on a StingRay for power! Cheers!
hello yourself old friend..as you know it was your recomendation that made me shell out me hard earned, and im glad i did. incidently, john haire(our local luthier) looked at it and said you had made a blinding job of the set up which is praise indeed from the great man. btw quinny helped me up the stairs to get out of charters in the early hours sun morning with me flightcased ampeg head and mesa boogie cab( i think he may have lost an ovary doing it), and now reckons no matter how good and meaty my old rig sounds next to his pimped orange guitar amp and cab i should get a nice small peavey 90 combo or similar instead, lazy young bleeder that he is.. i will deffo post a full review when ive used it fior a few more gigs oldgit( we must be related mate ) once ive sussed it out a bit more and seen if hard use brings on any problems; im a heavy handed player and may be going up at least a guage to 105s once its burnt in a bit more, so we will see how the trussrod/neck/action copes with that, though in truth i mightnt bother, it sounds unbelievably fat on 100's, even the high end runs.

thanks guys, and hello young nick (i knew him when all this was just fields...), and i hope that black precision you added to your collection the day i got mine is still pleasuring you mightily .. glad theres a few fellow bikers on hear too, bikes an music do go hand in hand, especially with us old uns
That's not a weird tele/precison - the Mike Dirnt's are cracking basses! Very, very underatted IMO.
yup, its a good bit of kit alright. gigged it sat night, and the bloke who owned it before was there, told me he'd had it three years. i found this very reassuring, as the first thing i did when you guys told me what it was, was checked out all the online reviews, and it seemed you either got a really good one, or occasionally a really bad one, something i had already associated MIM basses with (perhaps unfairly).. any problems i had read about with the "tequila tuesday" ones had manifested fairly early on, so hopefully this one is as good as it looks. build quality and finish are really, really good, but the best thing is the tone, now ive had a chance to play it loud, through a decent rig(id only heard it in the local music shop where it was a customers private sale and at home thru me practice amp) with my limited tech knowledge, i'd hazard a guess that its a combination of the bulk and solidity of the un contoured slab ash body, the badass2 bridge, and mostly.. the Custom Vintage 59 Split Single-Coil Pickup..all in all, i'd deffo recommend this bass to anyone. bad bits so far..only one really, its a good job it sounds brilliant with vol and tone both set at eleven(no, this one goes up to eleven..;-)), because with the tone set back the other way, it just sounds plain weird, sort of hollow if you know what i mean. anyway, i love it, and unless this bloody depression makes it even more difficult to survive as a builder than it is doing now(1 days work last week :-( )its a keeper.

hello blokes 49 years old been playing bass since '76, gigging regular since err '76 (how clever we think we are when we are young lol) been on telly once(live and kicking) radio once (lite fm ) magazines regularly(sadly never as a bassist, i roadtest for "bike" magazine ) and thats all there is, the sum of my existence.. apart from, always, always loved playing bass far more than any other instrument, been playing with the same drummer(blanty) for last 12 years and three bands, which is a godsend because he is bloody brilliant and makes me sound far better than i actually am. and he always makes me laugh, which as you know, is more important than anything being in a band. a kid in the music shop asked me what its like being in a band once.. i told him "its tough..like being married, but without the sex. actually, its just like being married..." bet he ignored my sagely advice, joined a band, then got married...

aaah...signature models..of course.. thanks guys you know that thing, where just a few minutes after you asked a stupid question, you really really wish you hadnt and know you will be remembered for it eternally..;-) mr dirnt is a good geezer, ive always loved the look and attitude of a tele bass, to have one with a standard precision tone and lovely slim jazz neck is genious imho it will be tried out properly at tomorrow nights gig an me trusty jazz will be having a well earned rest thanks again blokes

hullo fellow humans, i bought a bass today because it played and looked and sounded lovely, and came up second hand at what i thought was a good price..its a telecaster or 51 precision bass i think, but strangely, doesnt have either the single pick up of a 51, or the humbucker looking pick up of a tele, its got standard precision pickups(the kind that look like two piggy backing but are actually one)..other clues..its not that old, got spaghetti fender precion bass on the headstock and is a gringo(made in mexico), its very heavy, got pukka alnico magnets in the p/u's, has got a badass2 brige that is fitted as standard and its in a sort of tv yellow with white scratchplate. also it sounds proper, very warm and not too toppy..any ideas what model it is guys? ive never seen one like this before :-) thanking you..oh, and im going to try myhand at putting a pic on..
